Computer-use agents can operate a website through its visible interface: they inspect what is on screen, then click, scroll, and type using a virtual mouse and keyboard. That can make a task technically possible without a task-specific API, but it does not authorize access to a site that blocks the agent. Use only an access path the site permits.
How can an agent use a site without a task-specific API?
An agent can treat the interface as its control surface. It observes a screenshot or structured page information, chooses an action, performs it, and checks the resulting state. The cycle repeats until the task is complete or the agent needs human input.

This approach differs from a conventional integration, which sends structured requests to a documented API. A computer-use agent instead interacts with controls intended for people. It can therefore attempt multi-step tasks on interfaces for which no specialized integration exists, but it is coupled to what the interface exposes: layout, labels, page state, and any changes that occur while it is working.
OpenAI’s 2025 computer-using-agent announcement describes screenshot observation and virtual mouse-and-keyboard actions. An interface can be visible without being dependable: dynamic pages may change between observations, and an agent can misread a control or act on the wrong state.

What are the main ways to run computer-use automation?
The model’s interaction style and the runtime that carries out its actions are separate choices. The application or provider must supply an environment, keep the session’s state available, and decide which actions are permitted.

These approaches trade operational responsibility, observation style, and scope. Browser-focused interaction can use structured page information, while screenshot-and-coordinate interaction can reach controls that are difficult to represent semantically. Full desktop control can extend beyond a browser, but it also increases the range of actions the runtime must constrain. None of these designs should be treated as a method for overriding a site’s access policy.
Why can a visible page still be difficult to automate?
Dynamic layouts and changing page state
A control may move, disappear, or change after a page update. If the agent acts on an earlier observation, it may click the wrong thing. Re-checking the page after meaningful actions helps detect state changes before the next step.

Virtualized lists and canvas-rendered interfaces
Some pages expose only the content currently rendered, and some interfaces draw controls into a canvas rather than presenting them as ordinary page elements. Anthropic’s browser-use documentation describes element references as best-effort and warns they may fail on highly dynamic pages, virtualized lists, and canvas-rendered interfaces. Screenshot observation and coordinate clicks can be a fallback, but those actions still need verification.
Observation is not understanding
A screenshot, page tree, or text extract gives the agent evidence about the current interface; it does not prove that the agent interpreted it correctly. For consequential tasks, the application should verify the resulting state and ask a person to review important steps rather than treating a successful click as proof of success.
What if the platform blocks the agent?
Blocking is an access decision, not simply a technical inconvenience. OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Some websites use security measures that restrict access from automated browser agents.” It says the website operator decides whether to allow Cloud browser traffic. The fact that a person can open the same site in a normal browser does not establish that the operator permits agent traffic.

If a Cloud browser session is blocked, OpenAI’s help guidance suggests trying another site or opening the page directly in the user’s own browser. Do not treat a CAPTCHA, login challenge, or other access control as something to defeat. If the task is important, check whether the service offers a connected app or plugin for it, or ask the site operator about an authorized route.

For site operators who choose to recognize OpenAI Cloud browser traffic, OpenAI documents Web Bot Auth and signed HTTP requests based on RFC 9421. The documented headers are Signature, Signature-Input, and Signature-Agent. The guidance gives allowlisting steps for Akamai, Cloudflare, HUMAN, and Vercel, and says Vercel-hosted sites need no additional configuration for this traffic.
Those instructions concern the documented OpenAI Cloud browser flow. They are not a general technique for defeating another provider’s blocks or a substitute for the operator’s permission. Whether a specific automation task complies with a platform’s terms, applicable law, or account conditions is not established by these technical sources; assess those requirements separately.

How should teams control safety and reliability?
Browser content is untrusted input, and actions taken in an authenticated session can affect real accounts or data. OpenAI’s developer guidance recommends an isolated environment, execution limits, application-level permission rules, and review of actions and results. Its user guidance advises checking sensitive steps and confirming consequential actions; it also warns that safeguards do not remove every risk.
Set boundaries before execution
- Run the browser or desktop session in an isolated environment, separate from sensitive host resources.
- Limit the actions the agent may take, the resources it can reach, and how long a task can execute.
- Enforce permissions in the application, not only in the agent’s instructions. Require human confirmation before consequential actions.
Verify actions and results
- Check the destination and the information on screen before submitting sensitive data or confirming a change.
- After an action, inspect the resulting page or application state. If the agent uses the wrong site or information, stop rather than continuing on an incorrect assumption.
- Keep an auditable record of permitted actions and outcomes appropriate to the task, while applying suitable protections to account data.
Interpret published security evidence carefully
The 2025 MIT AI Agent Index, published for FAccT ’26, reports that 25 of the 30 agents it reviewed disclosed no internal safety results and 23 of 30 had no third-party testing information. The Index also records known incidents or reported security concerns for 8 of 30 agents and documents prompt-injection vulnerabilities for 2 of 5 browser agents. These are counts from the Index’s reviewed sample, not a census of all deployed agents or a measure of risk for every task.

What do computer-use benchmark scores show?
OpenAI’s 2025 announcement reports scores of 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87.0% on WebVoyager for its computer-using agent evaluation. OpenAI describes OSWorld as a computer-use evaluation and WebArena and WebVoyager as browser-use evaluations. WebArena uses self-hosted open-source websites to imitate real-world scenarios; WebVoyager tests live websites.

These are results reported by OpenAI for named evaluations in that announcement. They are not a guarantee that an agent will complete a particular task, and they do not establish a current cross-provider ranking. Benchmark conditions and the live site’s access policy both matter when judging whether an approach is suitable.
How should you choose an approach?
Start with authorization and the task’s risk, then choose the least complex runtime that can perform the permitted work.
