How to Tell If Your Router’s CPU Is Slowing Your Wi-Fi

A router’s CPU can limit internet speed in some setups, but slow Wi-Fi alone does not prove the processor is the problem—and there is no universal list of six settings everyone should turn off. First separate an ISP or Wi-Fi issue from a router-performance issue. Then test only the settings relevant to your router and symptoms, one at a time.

First find out whether the router is actually the bottleneck

A slow speed test over Wi-Fi can reflect the internet connection, modem, wireless interference, or the router itself. Changing router features before distinguishing these causes can remove useful protections without improving speed.

  1. Establish a baseline. If possible, run a speed test from a computer connected to the router by Ethernet. Record the result, then test Wi-Fi with the same device and test method. OpenWrt recommends checking both speed and latency before changing settings; its SQM documentation explains why both can matter.
  2. Check the modem or ISP. TP-Link recommends testing a computer directly through the modem. If that result is similarly slow, the problem may be with the modem or internet provider rather than the router. Its troubleshooting sequence also includes restarting the modem and router and checking the Ethernet cable. See TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Make the Wi-Fi test fair. TP-Link suggests testing about six to nine feet from the router with no walls or furniture in between. Nearby wireless networks can cause interference, so channel or channel-width settings may be relevant; the right choice depends on the local environment, not a universal prescription.
  4. Identify the exact router and firmware. Menus and features differ by model and software version. Use the current manual or support page for the exact device before changing a setting.

Keep the same client, location, and test method for each before-and-after comparison. Change one option at a time, measure again, and restore it if speed does not improve or a feature you need stops working.

Settings worth testing, depending on your router

These are conditional checks, not six settings to disable as a batch. The evidence supports investigating particular features in particular contexts; it does not establish that each one commonly throttles Wi-Fi.

1. QoS: test only if you do not need traffic prioritization

Quality of Service (QoS) can allocate bandwidth or prioritize selected traffic. TP-Link includes disabling QoS as a troubleshooting step if slow speeds persist. NETGEAR also suggests trying QoS changes for certain gaming or streaming problems on the R7000. The recommendation is not a general instruction for every model. If you rely on prioritization for calls, games, or other household traffic, keep it enabled unless a controlled test shows a benefit from turning it off.

For background on what QoS does, see ASUS’s ASUSWRT documentation. The available controls vary by router.

2. Parental controls: do not trade away restrictions for an unproven speed gain

TP-Link includes parental controls among the options to check during slow-speed troubleshooting. These controls can enforce access or content rules. Disabling them removes those restrictions, so test this only if the impact is acceptable to everyone who depends on them. Turn them back on if the test does not produce a measurable improvement.

3. SQM: relevant to OpenWrt and similar traffic-shaping setups

Smart Queue Management (SQM) schedules and shapes traffic to help control bufferbloat—the delay that can rise when a connection is busy. OpenWrt says SQM runs on the CPU, and slower devices may not keep up with the full internet bandwidth. That makes SQM a plausible throughput limit on some CPU-constrained routers, but turning it off can worsen latency under load.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If your router uses OpenWrt and SQM is enabled, compare throughput and latency with your normal workload, both with and without SQM. Do not assume the higher speed-test result is automatically better if calls, gaming, or other latency-sensitive tasks become less responsive. The OpenWrt SQM guide describes the feature and its CPU implications.

4. WMM: a model-specific troubleshooting test, not a general speed fix

Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) supports prioritization of wireless traffic. NETGEAR recommends a separate WMM troubleshooting attempt for certain gaming or video-streaming problems on the R7000, and its instructions for disabling WMM apply to listed Nighthawk routers. That narrow guidance does not support turning WMM off on routers generally. If you test it, follow the instructions for your exact model and restore it if the change does not address the problem.

5. Hardware flow offloading: usually consider enabling it, not disabling it

Flow offloading can increase throughput by moving some packet-processing work away from the CPU. On supported hardware it may help a router that is CPU-limited, but it is not a universal switch: OpenWrt documents that hardware offloading is incompatible with SQM and some QoS functions. Check your firmware’s compatibility notes and decide which feature matters more for your use before enabling offloading.

Settings not established as general CPU fixes

  • Traffic analysis or monitoring: ASUS describes Traffic Analyzer as a view of bandwidth usage, but that alone does not establish that switching it off generally reduces CPU use enough to improve Wi-Fi. Do not disable it as a proven remedy without model-specific evidence.
  • VPN client or deep inspection: The cited documentation does not establish a universal setting recommendation for these features. Their impact depends on router hardware and implementation; the evidence here is not enough to rank them as settings to disable.

When settings changes are unlikely to solve it

If the modem-only test is also slow, focus on the modem or ISP. If wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi is poor, investigate wireless placement and interference before assuming CPU throttling. If router-side tests point to a processing limit, compare results against the features you need: higher throughput can come at the cost of latency management or traffic prioritization.

A different router is worth considering only after evidence points to the existing hardware as the limit. For example, OpenWrt documents hardware acceleration and its SQM/AQL compatibility constraints for the GL.iNet GL-MT6000; that device-specific documentation is not proof that it is the right replacement for every setup. See the OpenWrt device page and GL.iNet’s GL-MT6000 product information, then verify the exact model and feature compatibility against your needs.
