A CompactFlash (CF) card is a removable flash-memory card that uses the CompactFlash standard and a Parallel ATA (PATA) interface. It is a specific legacy storage format—not a generic name for camera memory cards. If you are replacing one, confirm that your device explicitly supports CompactFlash before choosing a card.
What is a CompactFlash card?
CompactFlash is a removable-media standard used for flash storage. The CompactFlash Association (CFA) identifies its interface as Parallel ATA, or PATA, and classifies CompactFlash as a legacy specification in its current standards portfolio. The CFA’s card-types overview provides the official format distinctions.

Here, “legacy” describes the standard’s status in the CFA portfolio. It does not tell you whether a particular card is currently available or whether a specific camera or other device accepts it.
How CompactFlash differs from other memory-card formats
CompactFlash, CFast, CFexpress, and XQD are separate standards. Their names may look related, but they are not interchangeable simply because they are all removable cards used with electronics.

| Format | Interface identified by the CFA |
|---|---|
| CompactFlash | Parallel ATA (PATA) |
| CFast | Serial ATA (SATA) |
| CFexpress | PCIe and NVMe |
| XQD | The CFA card-types overview lists it as a separate standard; the cited overview does not identify its interface. |
Because the standards differ, physical fit or a similar name is not enough to establish compatibility. Check the device’s label or manual for the exact supported card format.
How to check whether a CompactFlash card will work
- Identify the required format. Look in the device manual or on its label for “CompactFlash” or “CF.” If a listing only says “CF,” confirm that it means CompactFlash rather than another format.
- Check capacity limits. Compare the card’s capacity with the maximum supported by your device. The limit is model-specific and must come from the device documentation.
- Check any speed requirements. Use the camera or device manual and the card documentation to confirm that the card meets the stated requirements. The format name alone does not establish a speed limit or guarantee performance.
- Verify readers separately. If you need to transfer files using a card reader, confirm that the reader explicitly supports CompactFlash. Support for a different card format does not establish CF compatibility.
What to look for when buying one
For a compatible device, search for a “CompactFlash memory card” and verify the precise format, capacity, and any documented speed requirements against the host device. Do not substitute CFast or CFexpress unless the device documentation explicitly supports that format. Availability and camera compatibility depend on the specific product and device; the CFA’s overview does not establish current stock or model-level support.
