Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A practical workaround is to type the numerals into footers yourself, but they will not update automatically when pagination changes. If you mean Roman-numeral section headings, use heading styles and type the numerals in the heading text.
First, decide what you want to number
| Goal | Google Docs feature | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Roman-numeral page labels | Typed footer text, with section controls if needed | The workaround is manual; Docs’ page-number controls do not document a Roman-numeral style. Google’s page-number help describes standard page numbering and section options. A Google Docs Product Expert volunteer also said in a community answer dated October 20, 2022, that Roman-numeral page numbering is unsupported. Read the community answer. |
| Roman-numeral section headings | Heading styles, outline, or table of contents | Type the Roman numeral into the heading; these features organize headings and do not convert page numbers. Google’s outline help and heading and table-of-contents help explain these tools. |
How to add Roman-numeral page labels manually
- Switch to Pages format. On a computer, open File > Page setup, select Pages, then confirm. Google says page numbers, headers, and footers are unavailable in Pageless format. See Google’s format and page-number instructions.
- Add a footer or standard page number as a starting point. Use Insert > Page elements > Page number. Choose More options to adjust alignment or apply numbering to a section. The standard page-number control does not provide a documented Roman-numeral style.
- Separate parts of the document if their footers differ. Place the cursor at the boundary, then choose Insert > Break and select Section break (next page or continuous). Google’s instructions cover page and section breaks here.
- Unlink the new section footer if necessary. Open its footer and turn off Link to previous so edits there do not carry over from the preceding section. Section-specific page-number controls and footers can help isolate front matter from the main text. Google’s page-number help.
- Type the Roman numerals into the footer text. Enter the labels you need, such as i, ii, iii, then check them after adding, removing, or rearranging content. Because these are typed labels rather than automatic page numbers, pagination changes can make them incorrect.
How to put Roman numerals in headings
For labels such as “I. Introduction” or “II. Methods,” enter the numeral as part of each heading, then apply a heading style. Select the heading and use the style menu in the toolbar to choose an appropriate heading level. To navigate by those headings, choose View > Show outline. You can also insert a table of contents based on document headings using Insert > Page elements > Table of contents. Google’s guides cover the document outline and headings and table of contents.

Fix common problems
- Page number or footer controls are missing: Check that the document is in Pages format, not Pageless.
- A footer change appears in another section: Check that a section break is in the right place and turn off Link to previous for the section whose footer should differ.
- Roman numerals no longer match the pages: Review and edit the typed footer labels after pagination changes; this workaround does not renumber them automatically.
The distinction matters: Google’s current help documents page numbering and section-level controls, but does not identify Roman-numeral page numbering as an available style. The direct statement that it is unsupported comes from a Google Docs Product Expert volunteer’s October 2022 community answer, not an official Google specification.
