Choose by the sensor and image detail your task needs, whether suitable archive imagery already exists, the location and collection window, delivery requirements, and the license rights you need. Then ask providers for a feasibility check, current quote, sample data, and written terms for your exact area and use.
Start with the job, not the provider name
Commercial satellite imagery is not one interchangeable product. Providers differ in optical and radar sensors, resolution and spectral bands, archive coverage, new collection options, delivery routes, and usage rights. A headline resolution or revisit figure does not establish that a provider can capture your target, at the right angle and time, or under the terms you need.

Write down the feature or change you need to see, the area of interest (AOI), the relevant dates, how quickly you need the data, and whether you need to publish, redistribute, or use the imagery commercially. Those details make provider comparisons meaningful.

Which sensor works through clouds or at night?
Optical imagery
Optical satellites capture images more like a camera and can provide lifelike visual detail and multispectral information. They need daylight and clear skies for useful collection; Airbus states this distinction in its optical-versus-radar FAQ. Cloud, darkness, and some weather conditions can therefore block or delay a usable optical image.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR)
SAR uses radar rather than visible light, so it can collect at night and through cloud cover in most weather. NASA describes SAR as useful for day-and-night, all-weather observation. It is not simply a visual substitute for an optical photograph: choose it when its radar observations suit the feature or change you are measuring, and confirm that the product and mode fit the task.
Which commercial providers are worth comparing?
NASA’s 2026 Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) agreement announcement names seven commercial partners: Airbus Defense and Space GEO Inc. (Airbus U.S.), Capella Space, ICEYE US, MDA Space, Planet Labs, Umbra, and Vantor, formerly Maxar. The announcement describes near-global multispectral imagery arrangements with Planet, Airbus, and Vantor, and high-resolution SAR agreements with Capella, ICEYE, MDA, Umbra, and Airbus. This is a useful snapshot of vendors relevant to NASA’s science program, not a complete market list or an endorsement for every buyer. NASA’s CSDA FAQ also lists BlackSky and Satellogic as program data sources, with availability varying by vendor, product, and license tier.
Rank #2
| Provider | Documented offering to investigate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Airbus | Optical Pléiades Neo, Pléiades, Vision-1, and SPOT products; TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, and PAZ radar; OneAtlas archive access and tasking. | These are Airbus product descriptions. Confirm the exact product resolution and availability for the requested acquisition. |
| Planet | Multispectral imagery arrangements and a high-resolution tasking service with a Planet Tasking archive. | A Planet product page indexed by search results reports 50 cm archive imagery collected on or after June 30, 2020, and 72 cm for earlier collections. Those are search-indexed vendor claims; verify current product specifications before relying on them. |
| Vantor (formerly Maxar) | WorldView imagery, radar imagery, tasking access, and spatial-intelligence products. | Vantor’s homepage advertises “15x” daily collection opportunities and about 7 million square kilometres of daily high-resolution collection capacity. These are undated company-reported figures, not independently verified comparisons. |
| Capella Space | High-resolution SAR under NASA’s CSDA agreements. | NASA’s CSDA dataset page, accessed in 2026, describes a growing archive of more than 30,000 images collected since 2020. This is an archive count, not a guarantee of coverage for a particular AOI or date. |
| ICEYE | SAR archive imagery and tasking by AOI, imaging mode, acquisition angle, timing, and repeat cycle. | NASA describes ICEYE US imagery down to 25 cm, a product- and mode-specific figure. ICEYE says delivery is within eight hours of downlink, averaging under four hours, and that archive imagery remains listed for at least seven days after acquisition; these are provider statements, not cross-vendor guarantees. |
| MDA Space and Umbra | High-resolution SAR agreements under NASA’s CSDA program. | The cited NASA agreement announcement establishes their participation, but does not provide a like-for-like product specification in the information summarized here. |
| BlackSky | Listed among commercial data sources represented in NASA’s CSDA program. | NASA’s FAQ says availability varies by vendor, product type, and license tier. |
| Satellogic | Sub-meter imagery, with access described through API, FTP, and reseller channels. | Satellogic advertises up to seven daily revisits of a point of interest. That is a provider claim; actual collection depends on the AOI and collection plan. |
The table is a shortlist, not a ranking. NASA’s partnerships indicate relevance to its science program, but do not establish that a provider is the right fit, available to every buyer, or authorized for every intended use.

Check the archive first
If your question concerns a past date or can be answered by an existing scene, search archive holdings before paying for a new acquisition. Compare the exact location, collection date, sensor and product, image quality, and processing information against your requirements. For eligible CSDA users, NASA recommends its Satellite Data Explorer for checking holdings in the program’s collection.

Request tasking when you need a future collection
New tasking adds feasibility, acquisition-window, imaging-mode, AOI geometry, and delivery decisions. Ask the provider to confirm what it can attempt, when it can attempt it, what counts as a successful acquisition, and what delivery timing applies. A stated revisit or collection capacity is not a confirmed capture window: for example, Satellogic’s “up to seven daily revisits” is a provider claim, while ICEYE asks customers to specify revisit needs. Neither establishes that a particular order will be acquired on demand.
Compare providers against these requirements
- Target and detail: Describe the feature you need to identify. Compare product resolution alongside spectral bands, viewing geometry, processing level, and image quality. Ask for a sample or AOI-specific feasibility check rather than comparing unmatched headline figures.
- Location and dates: Check archive coverage for the precise AOI and date range. For future collection, request a written acquisition plan and feasibility response.
- Frequency and reliability: Distinguish advertised revisit opportunities from a confirmed acquisition window, acquisition probability, and any tasking priority.
- Delivery and integration: Confirm data format, coordinate reference system, metadata, processing level, API or FTP access, platform workflow, support, and delivery expectations before procurement. NASA’s evaluation framework includes accessibility, metadata completeness and accuracy, support, usefulness for research, and image/data quality.
- Rights and reuse: Read the actual license for publication, redistribution, derived products, commercial use, and any attribution or credit requirements. Access to a scene does not by itself grant unrestricted reuse.
- Total cost: Request a current quote for the AOI, product, timing, and license tier. Ask about minimum area or other order conditions; the sources summarized here do not establish comparable current prices or minimum AOI sizes across vendors.
Can you buy imagery of a specific location, and how much does it cost?
Providers offer archive access and tasking routes, but availability and price depend on the specific area, product, timing, collection feasibility, and rights required. A provider’s general product page cannot confirm that a suitable image exists—or can be collected—for your location and date. Send the AOI and intended use to the provider or its authorized sales channel and request a written quote and feasibility response. Compare offers only after confirming they cover the same area, dates, product requirements, delivery, and license rights.

Can NASA CSDA provide an alternative access route?
NASA’s CSDA is a route for eligible research users, not a general public storefront. Access to commercial datasets is authorization-based and governed by applicable license tiers. Under NASA’s FAQ process, users submit an authorization form; NASA checks eligibility and relevant end-user license terms, then provides access instructions. Some data are designated public but still require an authorization form under the FAQ’s current guidance. Publication conditions and required vendor credit depend on the applicable terms.
Authorized users can search NASA’s Satellite Data Explorer for existing holdings. Coverage and latency vary by vendor and collection schedule. If data are absent, qualifying users may submit a request through NASA’s Data Acquisition Request System (DARS), which NASA reviews; a request is not a promise that a scene will be acquired.
A practical procurement sequence
- Define the observation: Specify the target feature, AOI, relevant dates or future window, required detail, and whether optical or radar observations can answer the question.
- Search existing holdings: Check provider archives and, if eligible, NASA’s Satellite Data Explorer before commissioning a new collection.
- Request matched proposals: Give shortlisted providers the same AOI, timing, product need, delivery expectations, and intended use. Ask for feasibility, sample data, specifications, and a current quote.
- Compare the deliverables: Check image quality, metadata, coordinate reference, processing, access method, support, and delivery terms—not just resolution or revisit claims.
- Review rights before purchase: Confirm the license permits your actual publication, redistribution, commercial, and derived-product uses, and note any credit requirements.
How to choose an alternative to Maxar
Maxar’s current brand is Vantor, so treat “alternative to Maxar” as a request to compare the required imagery or service, not as a fixed one-for-one product swap. For optical or multispectral needs, investigate the Planet, Airbus, and Vantor offerings that align with your AOI and timing. If clouds, darkness, or the target measurement point toward radar, compare suitable SAR products from Airbus, Capella, ICEYE, MDA, and Umbra. Then let archive availability, collection feasibility, delivery, workflow, and license terms determine the shortlist. The available specifications do not support a universal winner, highest-resolution provider, or cheapest provider across all products and conditions.
