AI can help ecommerce shoppers discover products, compare options, get purchase advice, and resolve post-purchase problems. Retailers can also use it to draft product content, assist support teams, and screen inventory. The practical value depends on the task, the data available, and whether people can review or correct the system’s work.
Where AI fits in the ecommerce journey
Ecommerce AI is not one tool or one kind of automation. It can recommend products, interpret a shopper’s question, generate a draft, summarize a service interaction, or help flag operational issues. Those functions touch four connected stages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Discovery: help shoppers find relevant products from a catalog, prompt, or image.
- Evaluation: explain differences, compare options, and offer size or fit guidance.
- Purchase and service: answer questions before checkout and support returns, exchanges, and other post-purchase needs.
- Merchant operations: assist with product content, imagery, customer communications, and inventory or safety workflows.
The examples below describe uses reported by retailers and technology providers. They show what systems are being used for; they do not establish that every retailer will achieve the same result.

Practical AI use cases for ecommerce
1. Personalized product recommendations
Recommendation systems can use information about a shopper’s interests or activity to surface products they may want to consider. Amazon describes personalized recommendations as part of its shopping experience. Recommendations can shorten the path from a large catalog to a manageable set of options, but they are suggestions, not proof that a product is the best choice. Retailers should make it easy for shoppers to browse beyond the recommended items.

2. Product research, comparison, and shopping guides
Shoppers may need help understanding an unfamiliar category or comparing products with different specifications. Amazon describes shopping functions for researching and comparing products, as well as guides for unfamiliar categories. A useful AI experience should explain which differences matter to the shopper’s stated needs rather than simply producing a confident-sounding list. When facts such as dimensions, compatibility, or materials affect a purchase, answers should be grounded in current catalog information.
3. Conversational and visual discovery
A shopper may describe a desired item in everyday language or use an image to show a style they are looking for. Google Cloud describes virtual stylists that combine chat and images to help shoppers find products. This approach can be useful when shoppers do not know the right product name or search terms. Results still depend on the quality of the catalog and image matching; retailers should offer ordinary filters and search as alternatives.
4. Size and fit recommendations
Size guidance can help shoppers evaluate apparel and footwear before ordering. Amazon describes personalized size recommendations for clothing and shoes. Because fit varies by brand, cut, and individual preference, a recommendation should be presented as guidance rather than a guarantee. Clear sizing charts and an accessible returns process remain important when an automated suggestion is wrong.
5. Pre-purchase questions and purchase assistance
AI can answer questions about product attributes, availability, or how items differ, drawing on a retailer’s product information. For this use to be dependable, the underlying catalog needs accurate, complete data, and the system should distinguish known details from missing ones. Questions involving unusual compatibility, safety, or a customer’s specific circumstances may need a person rather than an automated guess.

6. Post-purchase self-service and agent assistance
AI can support customer service through self-service channels and by assisting human agents. Google Cloud reports that Best Buy resolves issues up to 90 seconds faster using automated call summarization with Gemini. That is a vendor-reported result for a named company, not an independently established outcome for retailers generally.
Google Cloud also describes return and exchange conversations in which customers share images or video of faulty products. Visual evidence may help clarify a problem, but the retailer still needs a clear process for privacy, review, and deciding what remedy applies. Google’s article says, “Gen AI is transforming customer service through automation, from self-service channels to call centers to social media platforms.”
7. Product descriptions, images, and customer communications
Shopify’s retail AI article identifies product-photo creation and editing, product-description writing, and assistance with customer emails as possible AI tasks. These uses can help merchants create or revise first drafts, but generated copy and imagery need review for accuracy, brand voice, and whether the depiction matches the actual product. Shopify Magic is one implementation example for merchants using Shopify; feature availability and details can change. Shopify’s description of these capabilities is not evidence by itself that using them increases sales.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches8. Turning live chat into a sales opportunity
Shopify also describes converting live chats into sales opportunities as a possible AI-supported task. A well-designed workflow can help a support or sales representative respond to a shopper’s question and identify a relevant product. The distinction between assistance and action matters: suggesting an item is different from changing a cart, placing an order, or making a promise about delivery. Those actions should have clear authorization and confirmation.

9. Trust, safety, and inventory screening
AI and machine learning can also support product-safety screening and listing protection. Amazon describes using these systems for recommendations and product descriptions as well as safety and listing workflows. Amazon reported that 188 million products were inspected in imaging tunnels in 2023; it said this helped remove batches of inventory with expired dates or other defects. This is Amazon’s reported figure for 2023, not a general measure of what other retailers inspect or detect.
How to compare ecommerce AI approaches
The right comparison is between workflows, not just between claims that a system is “AI-powered.” Match each use to the customer problem, the inputs it needs, and the level of authority it has.
| Use case | Journey stage | Typical inputs | System’s role | Human or customer control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recommendations and shopping guides | Discovery and evaluation | Product catalog and shopper interests or questions | Suggests products or organizes research | Shopper can compare, browse, and choose independently |
| Visual or conversational discovery | Discovery | Text, images, product catalog | Matches requests or visual cues to products | Shopper can refine the request or use filters and search |
| Size guidance | Evaluation | Product sizing information and relevant shopper inputs | Recommends a size | Shopper can consult size charts and decide |
| Service self-help | Post-purchase support | Customer question and relevant order or policy context | Answers or routes a request | Provide a route to a person for unresolved or consequential cases |
| Call summarization | Support operations | Call conversation | Summarizes for an agent | Agent reviews and handles the customer’s issue |
| Content and communication drafts | Merchant operations | Product facts, image assets, or email context | Creates or edits a draft | Merchant reviews before publishing or sending |
| Safety and listing screening | Operations | Listings, product information, or inventory signals | Flags or helps identify potential issues | Retailer defines review and removal procedures |
These are practical evaluation dimensions, not a published benchmark. Before deployment, decide how the retailer will assess factual accuracy, customer effort, service quality, and unwanted errors in its own workflow.

- Name the problem. Choose a specific customer or operations issue, such as difficulty comparing products, repetitive pre-purchase questions, or time spent summarizing support calls.
- Pick the stage and task. Specify whether the system should recommend, explain, draft, summarize, flag, or take an action. Do not treat those levels of authority as interchangeable.
- Identify required inputs. Check whether the workflow depends on accurate catalog attributes, order context, customer-provided text or images, or a transcript. Missing or outdated information can undermine an otherwise capable system.
- Set boundaries and handoffs. Decide which answers need review, what the system must not do, and how a shopper or agent can reach a person. Require clear customer confirmation before consequential actions.
- Measure the outcome and errors. Assess whether the tool solves the original problem while monitoring accuracy, customer effort, service quality, and mistakes. A faster response is not useful if it is wrong or leaves the customer unable to get help.
Customer expectations: speed, savings, trust, and control
In Walmart’s 2025 Retail Rewired report, 69% of respondents said the speed of the overall shopping experience was very or somewhat important when deciding where to shop. The report also says shoppers use AI to compare prices, shipping times, and availability; receive price-drop alerts; and narrow options using historical preferences. These findings describe Walmart’s report respondents, not all shoppers.

Visa’s research on agentic commerce spans the United States, Australia, and New Zealand and highlights convenience, savings, trust, and control as consumer-attitude themes. Those themes are useful considerations when designing automation, but they do not establish that autonomous shopping agents suit every audience or product category. For retailers, a sensible design principle is to make recommendations understandable, keep shoppers in control, and make human help available when automation cannot resolve an issue.
