The company is using the system first on the dodo, for which it says only one complete genome is available.
GenoMorph has produced approximately 2,300 candidate targets linked to dodo cranial and facial traits, but those are experimental hypotheses—not evidence that a dodo has been recreated. Colossal still has to test the edits in the laboratory.

What GenoMorph is—and what it is not
GenoMorph is Colossal’s proprietary research platform, not a public app, downloadable model or commercial genetics service. It combines comparative genomics, developmental biology and high-resolution three-dimensional morphology to rank DNA regions that may control physical differences between living birds and extinct species.
The platform addresses a basic problem in ancient-DNA research: scientists normally compare many genomes to link a genetic difference to a trait. Extinct species often provide too little usable DNA for that approach. Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm described the software as “a treasure map for the dodo genome,” meaning a way to narrow a huge search space before laboratory experiments.

Why the dodo is the first major test
The dodo’s tropical habitat preserved DNA less effectively than the cold environment associated with woolly mammoth remains. Colossal says it has one complete dodo genome, compared with about 100 genomes for its woolly mammoth project. That difference determines how much direct comparison researchers can do.

The dodo therefore serves as a data-scarcity case: GenoMorph is designed to make useful predictions without pretending that a single genome contains every answer about the extinct bird’s appearance.
How the AI generates candidate edits
1. Learning from living-bird development
Colossal says it assembled genetic and developmental data from chickens, quail, ducks and pigeons. These living birds provide observations of which DNA regions become active as beaks and facial structures form in embryos.

2. Adding three-dimensional anatomy
The company also supplied the system with 3D skull measurements from more than 70 bird species. Those measurements connect observable changes in beak and skull shape to the developmental information learned from living birds.
3. Ranking regulatory DNA
GenoMorph uses the combined evidence to predict regulatory elements—DNA switches that influence when and where genes operate—rather than simply searching for a single “dodo gene.” The output is a prioritized list of edits associated with cranial-facial morphology, ready for biological testing.
What Colossal says it has found
Colossal reports approximately 2,300 promising DNA-editing targets for dodo cranial-facial morphology. The number is a candidate count, not a tally of successful edits. Each target still needs experiments to determine whether changing it produces the predicted developmental or physical effect.

This distinction matters because an AI association can be biologically wrong, incomplete or dependent on interactions with other genes. Lamm said the company must test whether the proposed changes create the desired traits. Until those tests succeed, GenoMorph’s output remains a set of ranked hypotheses rather than a recreated animal.

The delivery technology being developed alongside GenoMorph
The AI is only one component of Colossal’s stated pipeline. The company says it has developed a lipid-nanoparticle delivery system that sends gene-editing tools directly into developing bird embryos. The intended advantage is speed: researchers could observe developmental effects without waiting through an entire breeding cycle.
Colossal also reported two related avian milestones: a Nicobar pigeon colony of 36 birds and successful creation of the essential cells that eventually become eggs and sperm. Those cells and the embryo-delivery method are enabling technologies for testing edits; neither milestone demonstrates that a living dodo exists.

Is Colossal really bringing back the dodo?
Not yet. The announcement establishes an AI-assisted method for selecting experiments and reports approximately 2,300 dodo-related targets. It does not report a successfully edited bird, a viable dodo embryo or a completed de-extinction.
A successful result would require a chain of validated steps: selecting targets that accurately represent dodo biology, delivering edits to appropriate cells, observing the intended developmental traits and demonstrating that the resulting birds are viable. GenoMorph can prioritize where to look, but it cannot by itself prove that an extinct species has been restored.
Can the public use or buy GenoMorph?
No public access or licensing option was announced. Colossal describes GenoMorph as an internal platform used in its own de-extinction research. There is therefore no consumer download, subscription, hardware accessory or retail product associated with this announcement.

Why the announcement matters for de-extinction research
De-extinction projects often face a trade-off between poor ancient-DNA evidence and the need to make precise developmental changes. GenoMorph’s approach attempts to fill that gap with evidence from living relatives and measurable anatomy, while keeping the resulting edits testable in embryos.
Its significance will ultimately depend on validation. If laboratory work confirms that the ranked regulatory targets reliably influence the predicted dodo traits, the method could become a way to work with other extinct species whose genomes are incomplete. If the predictions fail, the platform will still have demonstrated the limits of transferring developmental patterns across bird lineages. For now, the concrete result is a new internal tool, a reported list of approximately 2,300 targets and a set of biological delivery systems that Colossal says are ready for further testing.
