Palo Alto Networks says attackers have conducted very limited exploitation of CVE-2026-0322, a high-severity remote-code-execution flaw in the PAN-OS management interface. Administrators of PA-Series, VM-Series and Panorama deployments should restrict management access and install a vendor-listed fixed release; Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access are not affected.
What CVE-2026-0322 does
Palo Alto Networks published CVE-2026-0322 on October 14, 2026. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 8.6, is rated HIGH, and carries the exploit-maturity label “ATTACKED.” The vendor says very limited exploitation has been observed against the PAN-OS management interface, so this is confirmed in-the-wild activity rather than a purely theoretical bug.

An attacker must be authenticated and have network access to the management interface. If those conditions are met, the attacker can execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the firewall. The credential and network-access requirements narrow the attack path, but a management interface exposed to the public internet is at substantially greater risk than one limited to a trusted internal network.

Which PAN-OS versions fix the RCE?
Palo Alto Networks lists the following fixed releases. Select a release in the branch that matches each appliance or Panorama system; do not assume that a Threat Prevention signature alone makes an unpatched installation safe.

Before scheduling the change, record the running PAN-OS version on each PA-Series firewall, VM-Series instance and Panorama server, then map it to the corresponding row. A branch can contain several fixed releases because the vendor is providing maintenance options for different upgrade paths; use a release that is supported in your environment and appears in Palo Alto Networks’ advisory.
Why management-interface exposure matters
Internet-facing management
The highest-risk configuration is a management interface reachable from external internet addresses. It gives an attacker the network path needed to attempt the flaw, after which a valid account could be used to reach code execution.

Trusted internal or jump-box access
Palo Alto Networks recommends limiting management access to trusted internal IP addresses or to a single jump box. This reduces who can reach the vulnerable service, but it does not remove the vulnerability or eliminate the need to upgrade.
Authentication is required
CVE-2026-0322 is not described as an unauthenticated attack. The exploiting party needs credentials and network access to the management interface. Organizations should therefore treat management accounts, source-address rules and remote-administration paths as part of the immediate exposure assessment.

What administrators should do now
- Inventory every management plane. Include physical PA-Series firewalls, VM-Series firewalls and Panorama. Check that Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access are not accidentally being treated as substitutes for affected PAN-OS systems.
- Measure reachability. Identify interfaces exposed to the internet and those reachable only from trusted internal addresses or a jump box. Remove unnecessary public access while the upgrade is being prepared.
- Choose the fixed release for each branch. Use the version table above and Palo Alto Networks’ current advisory to confirm that the selected release is valid for the installed platform and upgrade path.
- Install the PAN-OS update. Treat the software upgrade as the primary remediation, then verify that the running version on each device matches the intended fixed release.
- Keep management access restricted. After patching, retain the internal-IP or jump-box control rather than reopening the interface to broad internet access.
Can Threat Prevention signatures substitute for patching?
No. Palo Alto Networks says there are no known workarounds for this issue. Threat Prevention IDs 510046 and 510047 provide only limited coverage, and only when the documented configuration and content-version requirements are met. They should be viewed as a risk-reduction layer while an upgrade is arranged, not as a complete fix.

How serious is the current threat?
The combination of a HIGH 8.6 CVSS rating, root-level code execution and the vendor’s “ATTACKED” exploit-maturity designation warrants urgent action. At the same time, Palo Alto Networks characterizes observed exploitation as very limited, and the attack requires both management-interface reachability and valid authentication. Those qualifiers help prioritize the response: internet-exposed management planes should be handled first, followed by internally reachable systems, while all affected installations should move to a fixed release.
