Apple’s colorful Macs were not one fixed rainbow lineup: finishes changed by year, product line, and hardware tier. From five solid-color slot-loading iMacs to patterned 2001 models and bright iBooks, the color often identified a particular configuration rather than a finish available across every model.
How Apple’s colorful Mac lineups changed
Apple’s dated announcements and technical specifications document a sequence of distinct palettes from 1999 through 2001. The examples below are a well-documented selection, not a complete catalog of every colored Macintosh. The records establish historical launches and configurations, not present-day sale or parts availability.

1999–2000: five colors for the slot-loading iMac
Apple’s technical specifications page lists Strawberry, Blueberry, Grape, Lime, and Tangerine for the slot-loading iMac. Apple gives the model’s introduction date as October 4, 1999, and its discontinuation date as July 19, 2000. These named finishes were solid color choices for that model generation. Apple’s slot-loading iMac specifications.
July 2000: iMacs in Indigo, Ruby, Sage, Snow, and Graphite
In July 2000, Apple announced a new iMac family in Indigo, Ruby, Sage, and Snow, with Graphite also in the range. The announcement described four new models spanning the base iMac, DV models, and a Special Edition, with different specifications. The color names therefore belong to a family of differently equipped computers, not to a guarantee that each tier came in every finish. Apple’s July 2000 announcement.

February 2001: patterned iMacs join Indigo and Graphite
Apple’s February 2001 announcement added Blue Dalmatian and Flower Power patterns alongside Indigo and Graphite. The release lists different processor, storage, and drive configurations across the models; it does not describe every finish as interchangeable across all specifications. The patterned shells were a distinct visual turn from the earlier single-color names. Apple’s February 2001 announcement.
July 2001: a more restrained palette
By July 2001, Apple described its updated iMac family as available in Indigo, Snow, and Graphite. This narrower set followed the previous year’s broader range and the patterned finishes introduced that February. Apple’s July 2001 announcement.

Colored iBooks: portable Macs with their own palette
February 2000: Blueberry, Tangerine, and Graphite Special Edition
Apple said the consumer iBook came in Blueberry and Tangerine and introduced a Graphite iBook Special Edition. The Special Edition was a distinct model designation, not simply another standard color option. Steve Jobs described the refresh in the announcement: “The iBook has been a big hit with consumers, students and educators, and we want to make it even better.” Apple’s February 2000 iBook announcement.

Compare the model, not just the color
Apple’s releases tie finishes to specific product tiers and hardware configurations. When identifying a historical colored Mac, use the product line and model generation first, then check the finish and specification together.

What these color records can—and cannot—tell you
The official records are useful for confirming Apple’s model names, announced palettes, and the fact that configurations varied. They do not establish a complete catalog, current resale values, collector demand, restoration guidance, or a quantified cultural or sales impact. A finish alone is not enough to identify the computer’s exact hardware tier.
