10 Useful VS Code Snippets to Save for Python Development

Learn how to create and share Python snippets in VS Code, then adapt ten templates for common coding patterns without treating them as a universal ranking.

VS Code snippets are reusable code templates triggered by a prefix. There is no official or evidence-based ranking of the ten “best” Python snippets, but this starter set focuses on patterns many projects can use, with placeholders that make each template easy to adapt. Save the examples you actually use; skip any that do not suit your project or testing style.

Visual Studio Code describes snippets as “templates that make it easier to enter repeating code patterns, such as loops or conditional-statements.” You can insert one from IntelliSense, the Insert Snippet picker, or prefix-based tab completion. VS Code’s snippets documentation explains the available options.

How to add and insert Python snippets in VS Code

  1. Open the Command Palette and choose Preferences: Configure User Snippets (or search for “Configure Snippets”).
  2. Choose python.json for personal Python snippets. To share snippets with a project, create or use a snippet file under that project’s .vscode folder.
  3. Paste the entries you want into the JSON object, separated by commas. Save the file.
  4. In a Python file, type a prefix and select the suggestion. You can also open the Insert Snippet picker. For prefix-based tab completion, enable editor.tabCompletion in settings.

Each entry has a prefix, a body, and optionally a description. The body may be written as an array of lines, as below. In snippet bodies, $1, $2, and other numbered tabstops set the order of editable fields; repeated numbers link the same field. A placeholder such as ${1:name} supplies default text, and $0 marks where the cursor ends. Prefixes can be arrays, but distinctive prefixes help avoid irrelevant suggestions. See the VS Code snippet syntax guide for the full syntax.

10 Python snippets worth considering

These are practical suggestions, not an official top-ten list. Put the entries you want inside the braces of your Python snippet file. Replace placeholders before using the code, and remove templates that do not match your project’s conventions.

1. Typed function

Use this for a function with an explicit interface. Annotations are optional metadata: they do not enforce argument or return types while Python runs. Static-analysis tools can use them to check code.

"Function": {
  "prefix": "py-function",
  "body": [
    "def ${1:function_name}(${2:argument}: ${3:str}) -> ${4:str}:",
    "    """${5:Describe what the function does.}"""",
    "    $0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a function with editable annotations and a docstring"
}

Change or remove the example annotations to fit the function’s real inputs and result; do not add hints merely to imply runtime validation.

2. Main guard

Use this when a file should be both importable and runnable as a script. Keep the main behavior in a function so importing the module does not run the script’s entry-point code.

"Main guard": {
  "prefix": "py-main",
  "body": [
    "def main():",
    "    $0",
    "",
    "if __name__ == "__main__":",
    "    main()"
  ],
  "description": "Add an import-safe script entry point"
}

Use this for an executable module, not as decoration in files that have no script entry point. Python documents the main-module guard and import behavior.

3. Standard-library unit test

Choose this if your project uses unittest. The standard library’s test cases and runner provide a usable scaffold, but not every Python project uses this framework.

"unittest test": {
  "prefix": "py-unittest",
  "body": [
    "import unittest",
    "",
    "class ${1:Example}Tests(unittest.TestCase):",
    "    def test_${2:behavior}(self):",
    "        self.assertEqual(${3:actual}, ${4:expected})",
    "",
    "if __name__ == "__main__":",
    "    unittest.main()"
  ],
  "description": "Start a unittest test case"
}

Replace the assertion with one that expresses the behavior under test; do not keep a placeholder assertion that tests nothing. The unittest documentation covers test cases and its command-line runner.

4. Context-managed file read

Use a with block to work with a file and let the context manager handle cleanup when the block exits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"Read text file": {
  "prefix": "py-readfile",
  "body": [
    "with open(${1: "path.txt"}, "r", encoding="utf-8") as ${2:file}:",
    "    ${3:content = file.read()}$0"
  ],
  "description": "Read a text file inside a context manager"
}

Replace the path and operation for your task; a full-file read is not the right choice for every file size or access pattern. Python documents file objects as context managers in its built-in types reference.

5. Focused exception handling

Use the structure when an operation has a meaningful recovery or cleanup path. Select the exception for the operation rather than leaving a broad catch as unexplained boilerplate.

"Exception structure": {
  "prefix": "py-try",
  "body": [
    "try:",
    "    ${1:result = operation()}$0",
    "except ${2:SpecificError} as ${3:error}:",
    "    ${4:handle_error(error)}",
    "else:",
    "    ${5:handle_success(result)}",
    "finally:",
    "    ${6:cleanup()}"
  ],
  "description": "Start a try/except/else/finally structure"
}

Remove else or finally if the operation does not need those branches. Avoid catching Exception without a deliberate reason and handling plan.

6. Readable list comprehension

Use this for a simple transformation or filter that stays understandable on one line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"List comprehension": {
  "prefix": "py-listcomp",
  "body": [
    "${1:results} = [${2:transform(item)} for ${3:item} in ${4:items} if ${5:condition}]$0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a filtered list comprehension"
}

If the expression needs nested conditions or several steps, use a loop instead of compressing complex logic into a template.

7. Docstring function

Save a bare function scaffold when you need to write a docstring before deciding whether annotations belong in the signature.

"Function with docstring": {
  "prefix": "py-docfunc",
  "body": [
    "def ${1:function_name}(${2:parameters}):",
    "    """${3:Briefly describe the function.}",
    "",
    "    ${4:Args:}",
    "        ${5:Describe parameters if needed.}",
    "",
    "    ${6:Returns:}",
    "        ${7:Describe the return value if needed.}",
    "    """",
    "    $0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a documented function"
}

Delete sections that do not apply and follow the docstring format your project uses; avoid leaving empty or misleading documentation in finished code.

8. Pathlib path

Use this as a starting point for a filesystem operation based on pathlib.Path, which represents filesystem paths with path-oriented methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"Pathlib path": {
  "prefix": "py-path",
  "body": [
    "from pathlib import Path",
    "",
    "${1:path} = Path(${2: "data"})",
    "$0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a filesystem path with pathlib"
}

The next operation depends on the task: joining a path, checking whether it exists, and reading text are different decisions. Avoid saving a generic path line if it does not recur in your work.

9. Contextual logger call

Use a logger call where your application already has a configured logger, so messages can carry useful context instead of relying on scattered debugging prints.

"Logger call": {
  "prefix": "py-log",
  "body": [
    "${1:logger}.${2:info}(${3:"Describe the event: %s"}, ${4:value})$0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a contextual logger call"
}

Replace the level, message, and value with information appropriate to the event. Do not assume this one line configures logging for an application; configuration depends on the project.

10. Dataclass scaffold

Use a dataclass template only when the object is primarily a collection of fields. A class, function, or dictionary may be a better fit for other jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"Dataclass": {
  "prefix": "py-dataclass",
  "body": [
    "from dataclasses import dataclass",
    "",
    "@dataclass",
    "class ${1:Record}:",
    "    ${2:name}: ${3:str}",
    "    $0"
  ],
  "description": "Start a dataclass for a simple data container"
}

Replace the sample field with fields that represent the data your class needs; do not use the scaffold when the object needs behavior better expressed elsewhere.

Choose snippet storage and insertion to suit your workflow

Choice Best fit Trade-off
Personal Python snippet file Patterns you want available in your own Python files Convenient for personal reuse, but not automatically a project convention for teammates
Project snippet file under .vscode Templates a team wants to keep with a project Shareable with the project, but team members need to use the project’s VS Code setup
Short, fixed body A pattern that rarely changes Faster to insert, but still requires manual edits when details differ
Parameterized body A pattern with recurring fields or choices Tabstops speed customization, but too many placeholders can make insertion cumbersome
IntelliSense or Insert Snippet picker When you want to choose from suggestions or a list Discoverable, but requires selecting the intended entry
Prefix plus tab completion When you know the prefix and want a quick expansion Fast after memorizing prefixes; requires editor.tabCompletion and can interrupt typing if prefixes match too broadly

The VS Code Python overview describes the Python extension and notes that a Python profile template can include snippets, settings, and useful extensions. The examples here are a curated set, not a claim about the exact snippets in that profile. For interpreter selection and Python editing features, consult the Python editing documentation.

Keep the snippet file useful

  • Use prefixes that are easy to remember but specific enough to avoid noisy matches.
  • Keep placeholders limited to details you commonly change; sensible default text makes tabbing through a snippet faster.
  • Save only patterns that genuinely recur. A large library of rarely used boilerplate is harder to search than a few useful templates.
  • Review inserted code before running it. A snippet accelerates typing; it cannot decide whether a pattern is right for a particular operation.
