These five projects offer different ways to play horror for free, but “open source” does not mean the same thing in every case. Some provide playable builds; others share source code or replacement game content that needs a separate engine. Check each project’s download and licensing details before assuming every game asset is freely redistributable.
How to choose among these horror projects
For a quick recommendation: choose Static Mist for stealth and puzzles, Freedoom for a substantial Doom-style shooter if you already have or are willing to install a compatible engine, and Goon’s House of Doom 2 for a small retro survival-horror prototype with desktop builds. Penumbra: Overture is a horror game with GPL-licensed code, but that does not establish that a complete game package is currently available for free. VIGIL is an experimental project without a win state.

The key distinction is between a free-to-download build, open-source code, and game content licensed for free redistribution. Those are separate things, so the notes below identify what each project’s own pages establish.
Recommended Free Tools
| Project | What it offers | How directly you can play | Status or notable requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freedoom | Free replacement content for a Doom-compatible first-person shooter; BSD licensed | Pair its downloadable data with a compatible engine; the project recommends GZDoom as one option | Two single-player campaigns and FreeDM; project-published level counts are listed below |
| Penumbra: Overture | Horror game repository; code is GPL Version 3 | Verify current official game and download options; the code license alone does not establish a free, complete playable package | Repository encourages code contributions |
| Static Mist | First-person horror with stealth and puzzles; repository provides source and links to playable builds | Playable builds are linked from the repository | Source instructions specify Unity 2021.1.17 |
| VIGIL | Short fixed-camera survival-horror project | Build from source according to the project instructions | Visual Studio 2022 is required by the instructions; build in Debug mode, because Release mode does not work |
| Goon’s House of Doom 2 | Retro survival-horror prototype/beta; code is LGPL 2.1 and assets CC0 1.0, as stated on its page | Page lists downloadable Windows, macOS, and Linux builds | Page describes a small playable beta area; lists keyboard, Xbox, PlayStation, and gamepad input |
Freedoom: a larger shooter, with an engine to install
Freedoom is best understood as a complete free-content project for a Doom-compatible shooter, not as a standalone engine or the proprietary Doom game. Doom’s engine source became free, while its original game content remained proprietary; Freedoom supplies original replacement content instead. Download the project’s data and follow its instructions to run it with a compatible engine. The project’s explanation of Freedoom also points to GZDoom as one engine option.
#1 Best Overall
- Gorgeous Pixel Art & Animation: The game captures the essence of the Terrifier films with bright, cartoonish pixel art and fluid animations that vividly depict the gruesome action.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Team up with up to 4 players for a chaotic local co-op experience. Work together—or against each other—in various game modes. Travel through multiple stages, each with different paths to explore and enemies to defeat. Prepare yourself for intense boss battles that will test your skills.
- Bloody Arsenal of Weapons: From chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp. Enjoy hilarious and gory attacks that make every fight as entertaining as it is brutal. The finishing moves are guaranteed to leave a gory delight impression! Relive the golden age of gaming with a glorious chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements the retro aesthetic.
- Multiple Game Modes: With 6 different game modes, whether you're looking for a quick beat 'em up session or an extended challenge, there's a mode that fits your style.
- Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) in game text.
The repository describes two single-player campaigns and FreeDM, a deathmatch set. Its project-published specifications list 36 levels for Phase 1, 32 for Phase 2, and 32 levels for FreeDM. These are the project’s own level counts, not independent measures of quality or playtime. See the Freedoom repository for downloads and setup instructions.
Penumbra: Overture: open code, but check the game download
Penumbra: Overture is a first-person horror game from Frictional Games. Its official repository encourages code contributions and identifies the code as GPL Version 3. That establishes the code’s license; it does not establish that every commercial game asset is freely redistributable or that a complete playable package is currently available at no cost. Check the repository and official game options before treating it as a free download.

- This pack contains the first three chapters in the Poppy Playtime saga
- Each chapter features engaging new toy characters that can be either friend or foe
- Survive and progress by solving challenging puzzles
- Each game reveals to you a newly discovered area of the massive toy factory

Static Mist: stealth, puzzles, and playable builds
Static Mist is a first-person horror game with a PS1-like visual style and a cat-and-mouse approach to stealth. Its repository describes evading monsters, solving puzzles, and managing items, and links to both playable builds and source code. That makes it the clearest fit here if you want stealth-and-puzzle horror without beginning by assembling a compatible engine and content package. The repository’s source instructions specify Unity 2021.1.17; follow its current build instructions if you want to work from source.

VIGIL draws on PS1-era fixed-camera survival horror. Its README describes tank controls, inventory and resource management, item use, shooting, and enemies. It is an experimental short project rather than a finished campaign: the author says there is no ending or win state, and play continues until the character dies or all enemies are killed.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
The build instructions call for Visual Studio 2022, though older versions may work. They also state that Release mode does not work, so build in Debug mode. Consult the VIGIL repository for the project’s current instructions.
Goon’s House of Doom 2: a small playable beta
Goon’s House of Doom 2 is a retro survival-horror prototype with fixed camera angles and tank controls. Its creator page describes puzzles, combat, randomizers, and controller support as intended features, while cautioning that the beta offers a small playable area. The page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux builds, along with keyboard, Xbox controller, PlayStation controller, and gamepad input. These are the page’s stated options; they do not guarantee that every build or controller works on every setup.
Rank #4
- Featuring Burnhouse Lane, No Son of Mine, and Dagon: Complete Edition
- 5D Chess - Solve classic adventure-style inventory puzzles.
- Find the Truth Or Die In Shame and Terror - enjoy a hardcore survival horror experience.
- 100% faithful adaptations of Lovecraft's works brought to life through atmospheric voice acting
- Compact stories, each suitable for one gaming session
The creator page identifies the code as LGPL 2.1 and the assets as CC0 1.0, and says the beta and full versions will be free and open source. Its listed Q4 2025 full-release target is now historical, not an upcoming release date. Check the page for current project status and downloads.
What “free and open source” means for these picks
A project can publish source code without offering a complete free game download, and a playable build does not automatically mean its assets may be redistributed. Among these five, the clearest content-focused example is Freedoom, which supplies original replacement game content but still requires a compatible engine. Penumbra’s repository specifically establishes a GPLv3 license for its code, not for every asset or a no-cost complete package. Goon’s House of Doom 2’s page separately names licenses for code and assets. For any project, use its current official page to confirm download availability, build requirements, and the terms that apply to the specific files you use.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
