For sustained, predictable high-bandwidth traffic, colocation often costs less and gives you more control than public cloud—provided your servers stay highly utilized and your team can operate physical infrastructure. Public cloud is usually the better fit for bursty demand, rapid provisioning, managed services, and worldwide expansion. A hybrid design frequently delivers the best balance: keep the steady, data-intensive core in a facility and use cloud capacity for bursts, analytics, or disaster recovery. The right answer depends on total cost, traffic paths, geography, resilience requirements, and operational capability—not on a bandwidth number alone.
There is no vendor-neutral break-even price or universal latency winner. Prices, port availability, transfer rates, and facility options vary by region and contract date, so use the figures below as planning inputs and obtain workload-specific quotes before committing.

What you are actually choosing
Colocation means leasing space, power, cooling, and physical connectivity in a data center while you own and manage the servers, storage, and usually the network equipment. You pay for a rack or cage, power draw, cross-connects, circuits, remote hands, and hardware lifecycle work. The facility operator supplies the building and environment; your team remains responsible for the equipment inside.

Public cloud means consuming virtual machines, containers, storage, databases, networking, and managed services from a provider. Capacity can be created in minutes, but the bill combines resource usage with network transfer, inter-region traffic, load-balancer or gateway processing, support, and dedicated-connectivity charges. The provider operates the underlying hardware, while you operate your workloads and configuration.

For a high-bandwidth workload, the decisive question is whether traffic is steady and predictable or variable and difficult to forecast. A video-processing pipeline that moves tens of terabytes every day has a different economic profile from an application that occasionally spikes during an event. Measure the traffic pattern before comparing hourly compute rates.
Total cost of ownership: the comparison that matters
Comparing a server rental or virtual-machine rate alone hides the largest costs. Build a monthly and three-year model that includes normal operation, growth, and a failure state.
| Cost element | Colocation | Public cloud | Hybrid consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute and storage | Hardware purchase or lease, spare parts, storage media, and refresh cycles | Instance, container, block, object, database, and managed-service consumption | Place predictable baseline capacity where its utilization is highest; burst or specialized services can remain in cloud |
| Facility and power | Rack or cage, power circuit, metered usage, cooling allocation, and remote-hands fees | Included in service rates but reflected in resource pricing | Pay both sets of costs if data is copied between sites |
| Connectivity | Internet transit, private circuits, cross-connects, exchange ports, and router or switch ports | Provider port, virtual-circuit, attachment, gateway, and dedicated-interconnect charges | Redundant links improve availability but add fixed commitments and port fees |
| Data transfer | Usually governed by a circuit or port commitment and the carrier contract | Ingress may be free in some regions; egress, cross-region, and service-specific transfer are commonly metered | Model both directions and include replication, backups, and failover traffic |
| People and operations | Hardware installation, patching, firmware, monitoring, spares, and on-site or remote-hands work | Cloud architecture, security, automation, quota management, and provider support | Two operating models can require two sets of skills and tooling |
| Exit and change costs | De-racking, shipping, contract termination, and hardware resale or disposal | Data extraction, replacement architecture, and migration transfer charges | Keep an explicit exit path for every major data set and connection |
Build the colocation model
A practical monthly formula is:
rack and power + hardware amortization + maintenance and spares + cross-connects + circuits or transit + facility services + staffing + software licenses
Amortize servers, switches, and storage over the period you realistically expect to use them, not an optimistic maximum. Include a refresh reserve for disks, power supplies, network optics, and warranty gaps. If your organization needs 24/7 on-site response, price a remote-hands or managed-operations agreement rather than assuming engineers will travel at no cost.
Colocation tends to improve economically as utilization rises because the facility and hardware costs are largely fixed. A rack that is full of busy servers usually has a lower cost per transferred terabyte than the same rack running at a small fraction of capacity. The trade-off is that you pay for capacity during quiet periods and must forecast hardware purchases months ahead.
Build the cloud model
For cloud, calculate:
compute and storage + managed services + load balancing and processing + egress + cross-region transfer + private-interconnect ports and attachments + support + cloud operations
Separate traffic by destination: users on the public internet, another cloud, a colocation site, a different region, and services in the same region. The same byte can incur different charges depending on that path. Include retries, replication, backups, monitoring exports, and data copies created by autoscaling or disaster-recovery policies.
Cloud can be cheaper when demand is intermittent because you avoid buying idle servers. It can become more expensive when a large baseline runs continuously and sends substantial data out of the provider, particularly across regions or to another network.
Illustrative connectivity figures
Google Cloud’s 2026 published pricing lists dedicated connectivity at $2.328 per hour for 10 Gbps, $23.28 per hour for 100 Gbps, and $85.00 per hour for 400 Gbps. The same pricing page lists $0.02 per GiB for outbound transfer within the same area in the United States and Canada; inbound transfer is listed as not charged. These are regional, date-specific prices, not a universal cloud rate.

Google Cloud’s documented 30 Gbps example—three 10 Gbps circuits, redundant circuits, VLAN attachments, and 20 TiB of transfer—totals $10,898.56 for one month. The example demonstrates how ports, attachments, redundancy, and transfer can outweigh the apparent cost of a single connection.
AWS describes hybrid-connectivity cost as including “provisioned resources and usage,” in addition to provider connectivity, cross-connects, racks, and equipment. Its dedicated Direct Connect options are 1, 10, or 100 Gbps, and traffic on a dedicated connection receives the reduced Direct Connect transfer rate. The lower transfer rate does not make the connection free: include the circuit, cross-connect, port, and facility charges in the same model.

Equinix documents fixed, usage-based, and burst bandwidth billing, with examples for 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 100 Gbps ports and symmetric uplink/downlink commitments. Read the contract carefully: a fixed port, a metered port, and a burstable service can produce very different bills for the same monthly average.
How bandwidth is delivered
Colocation circuits and ports
In a facility, you normally buy a committed circuit or a port on a network exchange. The commitment defines the sustained rate; some contracts permit bursts while others enforce a hard ceiling. Redundant circuits should terminate on separate devices and, where possible, separate entry paths and carriers. Ask whether the quoted rate is symmetric, whether overage is billed, and whether the provider measures 95th-percentile, peak, or total usage.
Your usable throughput is also limited by every device in the path: server NICs, optics, firewalls, routers, switches, and storage. A 100 Gbps handoff cannot deliver 100 Gbps to an undersized firewall or a storage array that cannot ingest data at that rate.
Cloud networking and transfer
Cloud bandwidth is a combination of service quotas and billing dimensions. A virtual interface may support a high rate while the attached gateway, load balancer, virtual appliance, or storage service imposes a lower practical limit. Quotas can require a request and approval before a planned migration or traffic event.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIngress and egress must be modeled separately. Moving hundreds of terabytes into a cloud can be relatively inexpensive where inbound transfer is not charged, but moving the same data back out, across regions, or to another provider can create a substantial bill. Keep processing close to the data, compress or deduplicate where it is safe to do so, and schedule non-urgent transfers during the least expensive contract windows.
Private interconnects
Private interconnects bypass the public internet and can provide a more consistent path between a colocation facility and a cloud region. They may reduce some internet or transfer costs for bandwidth-heavy workloads, but they introduce committed capacity, provider ports, virtual-circuit or VLAN-attachment fees, cross-connects, and redundant-link costs.
Use a private link when the traffic volume is high enough, the path consistency matters, or security policy requires private transport. Do not assume that “private” means lower total cost: compare the complete port, attachment, facility, carrier, and transfer bill with the internet alternative and with keeping the workload in one location.

Latency and locality
Neither colocation nor public cloud is inherently faster. Latency is determined by physical distance, the number of network hops, the chosen carrier or interconnect path, congestion, and the throughput of devices on the route. A colocated server on the other side of a country can be slower than a cloud service in the same metropolitan area as your users.
For traffic-heavy systems, place the data producers, processors, and consumers as close together as the workload allows. Colocating near a cloud region or network exchange can shorten the path while preserving access to managed cloud services. Microsoft guidance specifically recommends placing high-traffic workloads in the same region where possible because cross-region connectivity incurs data-transfer charges as well as additional latency.
Measure round-trip time, packet loss, jitter, and sustained throughput from the actual application hosts. A short ping does not prove that a storage replication stream will maintain its target rate, and a high-bandwidth circuit does not eliminate application delays caused by serialization, encryption, or storage acknowledgements.
Scaling speed and capacity planning
Where colocation excels
Colocation gives you predictable capacity once the hardware and circuits are installed. It works well for stable pipelines, dedicated appliances, licensed software tied to physical servers, and workloads that need unusually high utilization. Expansion requires procurement, rack space, power availability, circuit upgrades, and installation time. Lead times can be measured in weeks or months, and a full facility may have no room for an urgent expansion.
Where public cloud excels
Cloud resources can be provisioned in minutes, making them useful for launches, seasonal events, experiments, and temporary analytics. Autoscaling absorbs demand that would otherwise leave owned hardware idle. The constraints move from procurement to quotas, regional capacity, service limits, and the time needed to automate safe scaling. A quota increase is not guaranteed immediately, so request it before a known event and test the scale-out path.
Hybrid scaling
A common pattern is to run a steady baseline in colocation and add cloud workers when queues exceed a threshold. This only works if the data path can feed those workers economically. Replicating a large data set to cloud for a short burst may cost more and take longer than keeping additional idle capacity on-site. Define the trigger, the maximum burst, the data subset to copy, and the process for returning to the baseline.
Resilience is an architecture decision
Both models can be resilient or fragile. One rack, one circuit, one router, or one cloud region is a single failure domain regardless of who owns the hardware.
- Colocation: use separate facilities or cages, independent carriers, diverse building entrances, redundant power feeds, and firewalls or routers configured for automatic failover.
- Cloud: distribute across availability domains or zones, and use more than one region when the recovery objective justifies the extra transfer and storage cost.
- Hybrid: keep redundant private connections and an alternate path, then document which side continues serving if either the facility or provider becomes unavailable.
- All models: test failover under load, verify that DNS, authentication, certificates, monitoring, and data consistency work during the event, and record the time to restore normal routing.
Google Cloud documents redundancy patterns for Cross-Cloud Interconnect that target 99.9% or 99.99% availability, depending on the design. Those are design targets, not a substitute for validating your own application and failover procedures.
Operations, control, and compliance
With colocation, you control the hardware model, firmware, storage layout, network operating system, and physical chain of custody. That control can simplify data-sovereignty or specialized-device requirements, but it also makes you responsible for patch windows, failed disks, spare inventory, secure decommissioning, and vulnerability response.

Cloud removes most physical maintenance and offers managed databases, queues, analytics, and identity services. Those services accelerate delivery but create dependencies on provider APIs, quotas, regional availability, and pricing changes. Document an exit strategy for critical data and workloads instead of assuming that a compatible service exists elsewhere.
Security responsibilities exist in both models. In a facility, secure console access, locked racks, out-of-band management, and media disposal are your tasks. In cloud, identity policies, network segmentation, encryption keys, logging, and public exposure controls are your tasks. A private interconnect protects the transport path from the public internet; it does not automatically authorize every system on either side.
A decision framework for your workload
| Workload condition | Usually the stronger starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Steady traffic, high hardware utilization, predictable growth | Colocation | Fixed hardware and committed connectivity can lower the unit cost over a long run |
| Bursty or seasonal demand | Public cloud | Elastic capacity avoids purchasing for the peak |
| Rapid product changes or a small infrastructure team | Public cloud | Provisioning and managed services reduce procurement and maintenance work |
| Strict hardware control or a specialized appliance | Colocation | You own the platform and its physical placement |
| Global users or multiple processing regions | Public cloud or hybrid | Regional deployment is faster, but cross-region transfer must be priced |
| Stable data-intensive core plus occasional analytics or recovery | Hybrid | Owned baseline capacity handles predictable traffic while cloud supplies flexible secondary capacity |
Before deciding, answer these questions with measured values:
- What are average, 95th-percentile, and peak ingress and egress rates?
- How much traffic is same-site, same-region, cross-region, cross-provider, and public-internet?
- What is the minimum capacity required during a circuit, facility, or region failure?
- How long can hardware procurement, a quota increase, or a migration take?
- Which team operates servers, networks, security controls, and on-call response?
- What are the data-retention, sovereignty, encryption, and audit requirements?
- What will it cost to leave the arrangement, including data extraction and contract termination?
Use at least three scenarios in the spreadsheet: normal operation, growth at the planned rate, and failure-state operation. Include redundant links and cross-region replication in every scenario where the design requires them.

Colocation core with cloud burst
Keep the primary databases, object storage, or processing cluster in a facility and send a bounded queue or selected data sets to cloud workers during peaks. This is economical when the baseline stream is constant. Set a hard limit on the burst population and monitor transfer volume so an unexpected retry loop cannot create an uncontrolled egress bill.
Cloud primary with colocated recovery or ingest
Use cloud services for the application and place a large ingest or backup system in a facility. This can make sense when data arrives through a fixed carrier or exchange and only a small, curated set needs to reach cloud. Verify recovery time, restore throughput, and the cost of moving the full data set during an incident.
Dual-site colocation with cloud services
Run the high-throughput data plane across two facilities while using cloud for identity, analytics, monitoring, or a control plane. This minimizes routine transfer but requires duplicate hardware, capacity, and operational procedures.
Cloud-to-cloud or exchange-adjacent design
When processing spans providers, a neutral exchange or cross-cloud interconnect can provide a dedicated path. Google describes Cross-Cloud Interconnect as a product that establishes high-bandwidth dedicated connectivity between Google Cloud and another cloud provider. Available sizes differ by destination: Google documents 10, 100, and 400 Gbps options for AWS and OCI, and 10 and 100 Gbps for Azure and Alibaba. Confirm current regional availability before designing around a specific size.

- Capture traffic for at least one representative billing period. Record bytes and packets by source, destination, region, protocol, and time of day. Separate user traffic from replication, backups, monitoring, and retries.
- Define service objectives. Write latency, throughput, recovery-time, recovery-point, availability, and data-residency targets. State the minimum service level during a link or site failure.
- Map the physical and logical paths. Draw servers, storage, routers, firewalls, circuits, cloud regions, ports, attachments, and exchange points. Mark every cross-region and cross-provider hop.
- Request comparable quotes. Ask facilities and providers for rack or power, circuits, cross-connects, ports, attachments, transfer, support, and installation fees. Require the quote to state term length, burst rules, overage, and renewal terms.
- Build the three-scenario TCO model. Include normal, growth, and failure-state traffic; hardware refresh; staffing; redundancy; and exit costs. Keep ingress, egress, and cross-region transfer as separate line items.
- Prototype the data path. Measure throughput, latency, jitter, packet loss, encryption overhead, and storage performance with production-like payloads. Test both directions and the failover path.
- Automate operations. Use infrastructure as code, capacity alerts, transfer budgets, configuration backups, and documented runbooks. Make quota requests and circuit changes part of the release process.
- Run a controlled failover. Disable each primary link or site in turn, confirm that applications continue within the stated objectives, and record the measured recovery time and data loss.
- Recheck the model quarterly and at contract renewal. Traffic mix, provider prices, service limits, and hardware utilization change. A design that was economical at 30% utilization may not be economical after a major growth cycle.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing from compute price alone
Symptom: the cloud estimate looks inexpensive until the first large egress or replication bill arrives. Correction: attach a per-terabyte transfer schedule to every traffic arrow and include ports, attachments, and support.
Best Value
Assuming a private link is automatically cheaper
Symptom: a dedicated circuit reduces internet exposure but costs more than the traffic savings. Correction: compare the complete fixed and variable bill with the existing path, and price both normal and failure-state bandwidth.
Ignoring the return path
Symptom: ingest is affordable, but restoring backups or serving processed data back to users is not. Correction: model ingress and egress separately and identify who pays for each direction.
Putting communicating systems in different regions
Symptom: latency and transfer charges rise together. Correction: colocate high-volume producers and consumers where possible, then reserve cross-region links for data that truly needs geographic separation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Building one “redundant” connection
Symptom: two circuits fail together because they share a carrier, router, entrance, or power feed. Correction: verify physical diversity and test each failure domain independently.
Underestimating operations
Symptom: owned hardware is cheap on paper but outages wait for a traveling engineer or unavailable spare. Correction: budget staffing, remote hands, spares, firmware work, and secure disposal explicitly.
Failing to test the burst path
Symptom: cloud workers launch, but data transfer, quotas, or storage throughput prevents them from helping. Correction: run a measured burst exercise with realistic data and a spending limit before relying on autoscaling.
What is the cheapest way to move hundreds of terabytes?
There is no single cheapest method without the source, destination, deadline, and retention plan. Start by asking whether the data must move at all. Processing it near its current location can be less expensive than exporting it to another region or provider. If movement is required, compare the full cost of sustained private connectivity, metered transfer, and any one-time import or export service offered in your region.
For each option, calculate:
- One-time transfer charges in both directions
- Temporary storage at the source, destination, and staging area
- Compression, deduplication, encryption, and validation compute
- Private ports, circuits, cross-connects, and installation
- Time required and the business cost of that duration
- Retry and restart behavior when a transfer is interrupted
Keep a cryptographic manifest and verify samples or full checksums after the move. Delete temporary copies only after validation and retention requirements are satisfied.
Bottom line
Choose colocation when high bandwidth is sustained, hardware utilization is high, and you can operate physical infrastructure. Choose public cloud when demand is bursty, provisioning speed and managed services matter, or you need rapid geographic expansion. Choose hybrid when a predictable data-heavy core benefits from owned capacity while cloud elasticity, analytics, or disaster recovery adds clear value. In every case, decide from measured traffic paths and a complete cost-and-resilience model rather than from compute rates or the labels alone.
