A collision-avoidance system is a technology or operational procedure intended to help prevent a moving vehicle or aircraft from physically striking another object, terrain, or traffic. The term covers different approaches in aviation, road transport, maritime operations, and unmanned aircraft; there is no single design or set of rules that applies to all of them.
What does a collision-avoidance system do?
At its broadest, collision avoidance means trying to avert physical contact. EASA’s June 2026 unmanned-aircraft rules glossary defines it as “averting physical contact between an aircraft and any other object or terrain.” That definition captures the goal, but not a particular sensor, warning, maneuver, or legal requirement.

Depending on the domain and system, collision avoidance may involve detecting a hazard, alerting an operator, recommending an action, or following navigation rules designed to reduce collision risk. Some systems depend on electronic equipment or communications; others rely on operator decisions and established procedures.
How does collision avoidance differ by domain?
| Domain | Examples of how it works | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Crewed aviation | Airborne Collision Avoidance Systems (ACAS) can provide traffic advisories; some variants also provide resolution advisories. | These airborne devices operate independently of ground-based air traffic control, and some alerts depend on nearby aircraft being transponder-equipped. |
| Road vehicles | NHTSA’s crash-avoidance research overview describes vehicle-based systems such as radar-based collision warning, as well as cooperative vehicle-safety systems using vehicle-to-vehicle communications. | These are broad categories, not a complete list of production features or a guarantee of performance. |
| Maritime operations | Operators follow the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), which includes conduct related to safe speed, collision risk, and traffic separation schemes. | Collision avoidance at sea includes navigational conduct and rules, not just electronic detection equipment. |
| Unmanned aircraft | Collision avoidance is the goal of averting contact with another object or terrain. | Guidance for crewed aircraft should not automatically be treated as guidance for unmanned aircraft. |
What do aircraft collision-avoidance systems do?
The FAA describes ACAS as a family of airborne devices that helps aircraft crews manage nearby traffic. The exact function depends on the variant:

- When the product is working, the sensor emits ultrasonic waves. When encountering an obstacle, the ultrasonic waves are reflected. The sensor receives the reflected signal and transmits it to the control box. Through calculation, the control box obtains the distance between the vehicle and the obstacle, and reminds the driver to pay attention through the display and sound, etc., to avoid danger. It is a good helper for us to drive the car!
- 1: When reversing, activate the rear 4 sensors and the front 2 sensors to detect and alarm. During normal driving, when braking, the 4 sensors in front of the car are activated to assist the driver to safely pass through narrow passages. When you release the brake, the parking sensor will work for about 15 seconds before stopping.
- 2: The product alerts the driver through sound, numbers, and light bars at the same time.
- 3: Probe behind the car to prevent collision, probe in front of the car to prevent rubbing.
- 4: On the display, there are 8 light bars representing each sensor, allowing the driver to distinguish the orientation of obstacles.
TCAS I
TCAS I provides traffic advisories to help the crew visually acquire nearby transponder-equipped aircraft. It does not provide the resolution advisories described for ACAS II.
ACAS II, including TCAS II and ACAS Xa
ACAS II provides traffic advisories and resolution advisories. A resolution advisory recommends a vertical maneuver or a restriction on maneuvering, with the aim of maintaining or increasing separation. It is advice to the crew, not a universal promise that a collision will be avoided.

The FAA’s ACAS overview, last updated September 29, 2025, lists TCAS I, TCAS II, and ACAS Xa. It also notes that international requirements vary with operation type, aircraft type, and airspace. FAA Advisory Circular 90-120, issued November 20, 2024, addresses operational use of ACAS for specified U.S. regulatory parts; it does not cover other traffic-awareness systems such as ADS-B Traffic Advisory System, or unmanned-aircraft systems such as detect-and-avoid and remain-well-clear systems.

Why is collision avoidance not one universal system?
The hazards, available information, and appropriate response differ across aircraft, cars, ships, and unmanned aircraft. A system that advises a pilot about transponder-equipped aircraft is not equivalent to a vehicle warning based on radar, a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system, or a ship’s compliance with navigation rules.

- LCD digital display with BiBi sound reminder.
- 4 sensor system, double CPU and advanced chipset to enhanced coverage and detection.
- Be beneficial to prevent dangerous and costly collisions.
- Help to provide increased safety for passengers, pedestrians and family members who happen to be around the moving vehicle.
- Detect small children and low walls as well.
To understand a particular system, identify what it detects, whether it warns or recommends an action, what sensors or communications it relies on, and who is responsible for responding. The applicable operating rules and standards also depend on the domain and circumstances.

No. The general term describes an aim, not a guaranteed outcome. A warning or advisory can help an operator respond to a hazard, but the capability and operating requirements are specific to the system and setting. For example, the FAA’s ACAS guidance varies with operation, aircraft, and airspace, while maritime COLREG rules address vessel conduct, including safe speed and traffic separation schemes.
