Fresh Ubuntu 24.04 for Chatwoot: Reimage, Prepare, and Deploy

Ubuntu 24.04 is within Chatwoot’s stated Ubuntu version floor, but a current release-specific command recipe is not established here. Learn what to back up, how to plan resources, and the documented deployment stages.

Reimaging a server removes its existing operating system and may erase data, so back up anything you need before reprovisioning. Ubuntu 24.04 is within Chatwoot’s stated Ubuntu 20.04+ support floor, but the available guidance does not verify a current Ubuntu 24.04-specific command sequence or image tag. Treat the steps below as a deployment outline, then use Chatwoot’s maintained documentation for exact commands and current files.

Check the server before you reimage it

Make sure you have saved needed files, database contents, configuration, and access credentials somewhere outside the server. Reprovisioning can wipe the old installation. Also confirm that you can reach the server through your provider’s console or recovery tools if SSH access is interrupted.

Chatwoot’s self-hosted installation guide states a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, and 20 GB SSD, and a production recommendation of 4 or more cores, 8 GB or more RAM, and 50 GB or more SSD. These figures are Chatwoot’s published guidance; the source gives no publication year, and they are not a workload-specific capacity guarantee. See Chatwoot’s self-hosted installation guide.

How do I install Chatwoot on a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 server?

The documented high-level route uses Docker Compose. Ubuntu 24.04 clears the guide’s stated Ubuntu version floor, but that alone does not establish that a particular set of commands, file paths, or container tags is current for this release. Before deploying, check Chatwoot’s maintained self-hosting documentation for the current procedure rather than copying an older command sequence or relying on a floating image tag.

  1. Provision Ubuntu 24.04. Select the clean OS image in your server provider’s control panel, then reconnect to the server after provisioning.
  2. Install Docker and Docker Compose. Use the versions and installation method specified in Chatwoot’s current documentation.
  3. Download and configure the deployment files. Follow the maintained guide for the current environment and production Compose files. Set the required application, database, and cache credentials in the designated configuration, keeping secrets out of public repositories and logs.
  4. Prepare the database and start the services. Follow the documented database preparation task and service startup sequence for the version you are deploying. Do not assume that an old sequence or an unpinned image tag matches the current release.
  5. Verify the deployment. Check the documented health and startup indicators, then confirm that the application is reachable through the intended domain and proxy.

The deployment outline is based on a Docker production deployment guide copy. Because it is a repository copy rather than a release-pinned, Ubuntu 24.04-specific walkthrough, use it for context and confirm exact steps against Chatwoot’s maintained documentation.

Put the app behind a domain, reverse proxy, and HTTPS

Do not make a container’s application port your permanent public entry point. The Docker deployment guide describes Chatwoot containers binding to localhost and recommends a reverse proxy such as Nginx for external access. Configure a domain to resolve to the server, route requests through the proxy, and use HTTPS; the guide gives Let’s Encrypt as an example TLS option. Follow the current proxy and certificate instructions for your setup rather than assuming defaults from an older guide apply unchanged.

Plan for updates and ongoing operations

Self-hosting means you operate the server and handle Chatwoot updates. Updates are not only image replacements: the deployment guide also calls for running Chatwoot’s database preparation task when updating images. Follow the upgrade instructions for the version you are moving to, and take and verify backups before changing application images or database schema.

Chatwoot’s account guide distinguishes this from Chatwoot Cloud, which Chatwoot manages and updates automatically. Self-hosting gives you control over your infrastructure, but it does not by itself guarantee security or regulatory compliance. Choose it if you can own maintenance, backups, and deployment changes; choose Cloud if you prefer Chatwoot to manage hosting and updates. Chatwoot’s account guide was last updated July 22, 2026.

What installation help and support are available?

Chatwoot’s FAQ says it does not currently provide one-time installation services. It describes developer support for self-hosting and premium support under a commercial contract or paid plan; check the current FAQ for the latest terms before relying on a particular support channel.
