A coherent perfect absorber (CPA) is a lossy system that absorbs a specially tuned incoming wave completely. The incoming waves must have the right frequency, amplitudes, phases and spatial pattern; under those conditions, interference and absorption leave no reflected or transmitted wave in the selected mode.
What is a coherent perfect absorber?
A CPA is a system engineered or selected so that a particular coherent input field is absorbed rather than scattered back out. “Coherent” means the incoming waves have a stable relationship in phase. In a scattering-matrix description, the matching input is a zero-eigenvalue mode: applying that specific field pattern produces no outgoing field.

This does not mean the material absorbs every wave that reaches it. A different frequency, phase relationship, amplitude balance or spatial pattern can produce reflection or transmission instead. Perfect absorption applies to the matched input mode and operating condition.
How does a CPA work?
Absorption alone is not enough to explain the effect. The input waves also interfere with one another, and their amplitudes and phases are chosen so the outgoing waves cancel while the system dissipates the incident energy. The foundational account describes the phenomenon as the interaction of optical absorption and wave interference. In its words, “This effect arises from the interaction of optical absorption and wave interference and corresponds to moving a zero of the elastic S matrix onto the real wave vector axis.” (Chong et al., Physical Review Letters, 2010)

In a simple two-port arrangement, waves enter from opposite sides of a lossy structure. The right combination of their relative phase and amplitude can make the outgoing reflected and transmitted waves vanish. More complex structures can require a more complex spatial wavefront, which may be difficult to synthesize in practice.
Why is it called a time-reversed laser?
At threshold, a laser emits a particular outgoing mode from a gain medium. The time-reversal analogy asks what happens if that outgoing mode is reversed: instead of light leaving, the corresponding wave is sent in toward a system with the corresponding loss. With the proper tuning, the input is completely absorbed. This is a comparison of matched modes and conditions, not an ordinary laser literally operated backward.

The analogy also explains why arbitrary illumination does not make a CPA. Just as a laser emits in a particular mode, a CPA absorbs a particular incoming mode. Its phase pattern and operating condition have to match.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What conditions must be matched?
- Frequency or wavelength: CPA occurs at the appropriate operating condition, not automatically across all frequencies. The foundational formulation describes absorption at discrete frequencies.
- Loss and coupling: The system’s dissipation must suit how it is coupled to the incoming channels.
- Input geometry: The arrangement may use multiple incident waves or a more elaborate spatial mode.
- Amplitudes and phases: The incoming field must reproduce the matching mode; phase errors can prevent perfect absorption.
- Wavefront: In a complex structure, producing the required spatial field can be experimentally challenging.
These requirements make CPA a tuned effect rather than a general property of a material. The Yale research-group overview notes the phase sensitivity of its two-port silicon-wafer demonstration, while a later theoretical treatment discusses the challenge of reflectionless excitation for arbitrary photonic structures. What has been demonstrated, and what might it be used for?
The foundational 2010 paper analyzed a silicon slab and reported the CPA effect over an illumination range of 500–900 nm. The Yale group overview describes a subsequent two-port demonstration using a silicon wafer. These are research demonstrations; they do not establish that CPA is a commonly available consumer device. Foundational paper Yale research-group overview
Researchers have discussed possible uses in detectors, transducers, switches, sensing and nanophotonic energy coupling. A 2017 review surveys a range of CPA architectures, and a 2012 paper describes theoretical coherent absorption for coupling light into surface plasmons with potential sensing applications. These are investigated or proposed applications, not evidence that each has become a mature commercial product. What are the practical limits?
Perfect absorption is conditional: it concerns a particular input mode at a suitable operating condition. Deviations in loss, frequency, amplitude, phase or wavefront can leave outgoing radiation. This precision can be manageable in a controlled experiment, but it becomes a design and measurement challenge when a structure requires a complicated spatial input field.
