AI-Powered Courses: What the Numbers Say About the Shift in Learning

AI learning platforms are growing, but their audience figures do not prove a mass shift away from traditional education. Here is what the evidence says about outcomes, AI tutors, and choosing a course.

AI-powered courses are attracting large audiences, but the available figures do not show that millions of people have left traditional learning for them. They measure platform reach, course enrollments, or access to AI tools—not learners who stopped attending school or replaced conventional instruction. Evidence that AI can improve learning is promising in some settings, but it does not establish that AI courses are generally better.

Are AI-powered courses replacing traditional learning?

There is evidence of rapid adoption, not a measured mass departure from traditional instruction. The World Bank’s Digital Progress and Trends Report 2025 reported that Coursera had more than 170 million learners globally as of April 2025, a figure the report equated to 5 percent of the global workforce. That describes the platform’s reach; it does not say how many people were active learners, how many were also studying in person, or how many had left a conventional course.

The same report counted more than 8 million enrollments across nearly 700 generative-AI courses by April 2025. It described those enrollments as 12 times higher than before ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Enrollments can include the same person more than once, so they should not be read as a count of unique learners or as evidence that those learners switched from another form of education.

Other large figures measure different things. Khan Academy reported that 2.0 million people around the world had access to Khanmigo at some point during school year 2024–25; the total included students, educators, and parents. Its separate figure of 104.9 million yearly active Khan Academy learners is not a Khanmigo user count. Neither metric identifies people who left traditional instruction.

What the adoption figures can—and cannot—tell you

  • Platform reach indicates that people have used or joined a learning service; it does not establish regular use or replacement of another learning format.
  • Enrollments count course registrations, which may include multiple enrollments by one learner.
  • Access means a person could use a tool during a period; it does not necessarily mean they used it, completed a course, or learned more.
  • Learning outcomes require evidence that measures what learners learned, ideally against a relevant comparison group.

Why are people switching to AI courses?

It is more accurate to say that learners are trying AI-supported formats than to assume they are switching wholesale. Such formats can combine self-paced lessons with explanations, practice questions, or conversational help. Those features may suit someone who wants to study around work, revisit a concept at their own pace, or get another explanation without waiting for a scheduled class. Whether a particular course actually offers useful practice, feedback, or human support depends on the course and its current design.

Platform surveys offer clues about perceived value, but not a controlled measure of effectiveness. In 2025, Coursera and The Harris Poll surveyed more than 52,000 learners in 179 countries; 91 percent reported at least one positive career outcome after completing a Coursera course or program. This is a self-reported result among course or program completers. It cannot show that the course caused the outcome, and it should not be compared directly with results from a classroom experiment.

Institutions are also building AI support into existing digital learning rather than only offering stand-alone AI courses. MIT describes MIT Learn as a hub for non-degree learning, with AskTIM support for learning journeys and syllabus questions, reinforcement, and tutoring in select offerings. MIT’s stated aim to open access to its digital learning opportunities is an access ambition, not a measured count of active users. Its 2024–25 report said 98 percent of MIT Learn content was free; access and features may change, so check the current offering before enrolling.

Are AI-powered courses better than traditional learning?

Not as a general rule established by current evidence. The broadest comparison in this evidence set is a World Bank synthesis published on 3 August 2026. It pooled 191 effect sizes from 14 studies in ten economies and estimated that adaptive and AI-enabled learning interventions improved outcomes by 0.125 standard deviations over traditional instruction. Within the included interventions, AI-powered tutoring or instruction averaged 0.12 standard deviations.

A standard-deviation estimate is a statistical measure of the difference between groups; it is not a percentage improvement, a guarantee for an individual learner, or a prediction for every course. The synthesis covers adaptive and AI-enabled interventions broadly, not just current generative-AI courses. Its authors found no evidence that generative tools outperform the earlier technologies included in the comparison, while noting that the confidence interval was wide. They also describe the evidence base as narrow: it included no low-income settings, and only two studies reported costs.

A more specific but much smaller example comes from a 2025 randomized trial in an undergraduate Harvard physics course. Among 194 participants, students using a custom AI tutor learned significantly more in less time than students in the active-learning classroom condition. That result makes the tutor a promising case, not proof that AI courses broadly outperform conventional teaching: it concerns one course and one carefully designed tutor.

Evidence What was measured What it supports What it does not establish
World Bank synthesis, 2026 191 effect sizes from 14 studies in ten economies; estimated effects for adaptive and AI-enabled interventions A modest average advantage over traditional instruction in the included studies That every AI course works, that generative AI is better than earlier learning technologies, or that the result applies to all countries and learners
Harvard physics trial, 2025 Learning and time in a comparison involving 194 participants, a custom AI tutor, and active-learning classroom instruction One controlled example in which the tutor group learned more in less time That the result generalizes to other tutors, subjects, courses, or settings
Coursera and The Harris Poll, 2025 Self-reported career outcomes from more than 52,000 surveyed learners in 179 countries Many surveyed completers reported at least one positive career outcome A causal course effect or a controlled comparison with classroom instruction

Can an AI tutor actually help you learn?

It can help when it supports active learning rather than simply supplying answers. AI tools can offer explanations, generate practice, provide immediate feedback, and help with revision. The OECD and Fondazione Agnelli’s evidence summary, which covers evidence available through October 2025, describes effectiveness as mixed and notes that many studies involve older versions of AI tools. A finding about an earlier system may not describe a current course or tutor.

The main learning risk is offloading: accepting a fluent answer instead of doing the mental work needed to remember, explain, and apply an idea. A quick response can feel helpful even when it leaves the learner unable to solve a similar problem independently. The useful question is not only whether a tool answers accurately, but whether using it leaves the learner better able to work without it.

Check how the course makes you practice

  • Does it ask you to retrieve an idea or attempt a problem before showing a solution?
  • Does feedback identify a misconception and help you correct it, rather than merely reveal the answer?
  • Do you have to explain or apply what you learned in a new example?
  • Is there a route to a human instructor or other qualified help when the tool is unclear or wrong?
  • Can you verify important claims, especially in subjects where errors have serious consequences?

How do the available learning formats differ?

The examples below illustrate distinct formats, not a ranking. Features and access terms can change; consult each provider’s current information before choosing.

Example Format What the reported figures mean Useful fit to consider
Coursera Structured online courses, including generative-AI courses The World Bank’s 2025 report gives platform-reach and enrollment figures; Coursera’s 2025 career-outcome figure comes from a learner survey. Consider it when you want a structured course or program, and check whether the specific offering includes practice, feedback, and a credential relevant to your goal.
MIT Learn A hub for non-degree learning, with AskTIM in select offerings MIT’s 2024–25 report said 98 percent of MIT Learn content was free; that is a reported content-access figure, not an outcome measure. Consider it if the available subject matter fits and you want to explore MIT learning content. Verify current access and which offerings include AskTIM.
Khan Academy and Khanmigo A learning-resource platform with an AI tutor integrated with learning content Khan Academy’s 2.0 million Khanmigo figure measures people who had access during SY24–25; its 104.9 million yearly active learner figure is a separate platform metric. Consider whether the available learning content and tutor support match the subject and the kind of help you need; access alone does not demonstrate learning gains.

How to choose between an AI-supported course and a conventional class

Start with the learning outcome you need, not the presence of AI. A credential, supervised practice, feedback from a person, or collaboration with classmates may matter more than on-demand explanations. A self-paced course may be convenient, but convenience alone does not establish that its teaching is effective.

  1. Define the goal. Decide whether you need foundational knowledge, a specific skill, a recognized credential, or practice for a high-stakes task.
  2. Inspect the learning process. Look for opportunities to try, receive corrective feedback, revisit errors, and apply ideas—not only generated explanations or summaries.
  3. Match the support to your needs. If you need accountability, accessibility accommodations, expert judgment, or discussion, confirm that the course provides them or that you can get them elsewhere.
  4. Check the evidence in context. A usage total, survey response, or result from one experimental course answers a different question. Ask what was measured and whether the setting resembles yours.
  5. Test retention and transfer. After a lesson, try to explain the concept without assistance and use it in a fresh problem. If you cannot, return to practice or seek human guidance rather than treating a completed module as proof of mastery.

AI-powered learning is a growing option, not a demonstrated wholesale replacement for traditional education. The strongest evidence here suggests that some adaptive or AI-supported approaches can help in particular settings; it does not show universal superiority or confirm that millions have abandoned conventional instruction.
