Yes—code review is becoming a larger constraint as AI makes code generation faster and cheaper. The scarce work is no longer producing lines of code; it is deciding whether a change is correct, secure, understandable, and safe to own in production.
That does not mean every AI-authored change is worse. In a controlled 2024 GitHub study, experienced developers using an AI coding assistant were more likely to pass all tests and received slightly higher approval rates. The practical lesson is to redesign the delivery system around small, verifiable changes rather than treating generated code as self-validating.

What the evidence actually shows
The strongest quantitative results come from a bounded exercise and a vendor-sponsored survey, so they indicate useful patterns rather than a universal production guarantee.
| Evidence | Finding | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub controlled study, 2024; 202 experienced developers completing a web-server exercise | AI-assistant users were 53.2% more likely to pass all 10 unit tests, produced 13.6% more lines of code per readability error, and had a 5% higher approval likelihood. | AI can improve task-level results under controlled conditions, but the figures should not be generalized to every production codebase. |
| Wakefield Research for GitHub, 2024 fieldwork; 2,000 enterprise developers in the United States, Brazil, India and Germany | Between 59% and 67% said security teams manually review code changes and identified that practice as a bottleneck. | Security validation remains a capacity problem even when implementation is accelerated. |
| Same 2024 enterprise survey | More than 98% said their organizations had experimented with AI-generated test cases. | Test generation is widespread, but generated tests still need a person to check what they miss. |
| Thoughtworks Technology Radar | Supervised engineering agents can produce larger change sets that are harder to review. Thoughtworks cautions against minimal-review “vibe coding” for production software and advises against fully replacing pair programming with AI. | Reviewability and shared understanding must be designed into the workflow. |
DORA’s 2025 report summarizes the organizational risk clearly: “AI’s primary role is as an amplifier, magnifying an organization’s existing strengths and weaknesses.” Teams with reliable tests, clear ownership and fast feedback can benefit; teams with weak controls can simply produce defects faster.
Why review becomes harder when code is cheap
Large diffs hide the important decisions
An agent can complete a broad request in one pass, but a reviewer then has to reconstruct the intended behavior from a much larger change set. Mechanical line-by-line reading is an unreliable defense: attention falls as the diff grows, while the most consequential decisions may be buried among routine edits.
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Ask for narrow, explainable pull requests. Separate a schema change, behavioral change, dependency update and cleanup into distinct units whenever they can be deployed independently. A small diff gives the reviewer a tractable question: does this specific change produce the intended result without creating a new risk?
Passing tests is necessary, not sufficient
AI can write tests that confirm the implementation it just produced, including the same mistaken assumptions. GitHub’s survey article states that “AI-generated tests, just like code itself, require human review to ensure all potential scenarios are considered.” Reviewers still need to look for missing boundaries, authorization failures, malformed input, concurrency problems, data leakage and rollback behavior.

Security review does not disappear
The survey finding that 59% to 67% of respondents experienced manual security review as a bottleneck shows why generation speed alone cannot determine delivery speed. Automated vulnerability and secret checks can provide earlier signals, but a designated human must decide whether the result is acceptable in the application’s threat model and deployment context.
Ownership can become ambiguous
When an agent authors most of a change, a team may know who requested it without knowing who understands it deeply enough to operate it. Every pull request needs a named human owner who can explain the design, answer operational questions and respond if the change causes an incident.

How to review an AI-generated pull request without reading every line first
- Write the intended outcome. State the user-visible behavior, affected components, non-goals and acceptance conditions before evaluating the implementation. If the request cannot be explained in a few sentences, split it.
- Check the change shape. Look at files touched, additions and deletions, generated artifacts, dependency changes and migrations. A diff that combines unrelated concerns should be returned for decomposition before detailed review.
- Review the design boundary. Confirm that the change belongs in the selected layer, preserves public interfaces and handles failure, retries, timeouts and rollback. This is where an apparently correct implementation can still damage system architecture.
- Run automated validation. Require the project’s unit, integration and end-to-end checks, plus formatting, static analysis and dependency or secret scanning where applicable. Treat a green pipeline as evidence, not as approval.
- Audit the tests themselves. Read enough test code to determine whether it exercises the acceptance conditions and adversarial cases. Add a human-authored test when the generated suite omits a meaningful scenario.
- Perform a focused security pass. Examine authentication and authorization, input handling, sensitive-data flows, dependency changes and infrastructure permissions. Escalate findings that require threat-model expertise instead of silently accepting a tool’s severity label.
- Trace the implementation to the requirement. For each important branch, identify which requirement or invariant it serves. Unexplained code, speculative abstractions and dead paths are reasons to simplify the patch.
- Confirm operational ownership. The owner should know how to monitor, disable and recover the change, and should be available to answer reviewer questions after merge.
- Review in stages for large work. Use separate pull requests for preparation, behavior and cleanup. If a change cannot be made smaller, require an explicit walkthrough or pairing session rather than relying on a superficial approval.
What human reviewers still own
Intent and trade-offs
People decide which problem is worth solving, what constraints matter and which trade-offs are acceptable. An agent can optimize for a prompt; it cannot own the product or regulatory consequences of an ambiguous requirement.
Security and privacy judgment
Humans remain accountable for deciding whether data access, permissions and trust boundaries fit the organization’s risk tolerance. Automated findings help prioritize work but do not replace that judgment.

System coherence
Reviewers protect interfaces, data models, reliability properties and long-term maintainability across repositories. Local correctness is not enough if a change makes the larger system harder to evolve.
Collective code ownership
At least one reviewer should be able to explain the change without asking the generating system to recreate its reasoning. Sharing that understanding through concise pull-request descriptions, design notes and occasional pairing prevents a team from becoming dependent on an opaque author.

How to tell whether faster generation made delivery faster
Measure the whole flow, not typing speed. Track these signals together:
- Lead time: how long work takes from start to production.
- Review wait time: how long a change sits before a qualified reviewer begins.
- Escaped defects: problems discovered after release rather than during validation.
- Rework: effort spent correcting, reverting or substantially revising a change.
A shorter lead time paired with rising review wait, escaped defects or rework is not a productivity win; it is work being moved downstream. Conversely, stable quality with shorter review queues suggests that automation and smaller diffs are improving the system rather than merely increasing output.

A practical operating model for teams using coding agents
- Set a maximum expected scope for an ordinary pull request and split exceptions into reviewable stages.
- Require a human owner and a plain-language description of intent, risks and validation performed.
- Make automated tests and security checks mandatory gates, while documenting which checks still require human judgment.
- Use generated tests as a starting point and add scenario coverage based on domain risk.
- Reserve explicit review time; otherwise faster generation only creates a longer queue.
- Periodically inspect rework and escaped defects to find where the organization’s process, architecture or ownership is amplifying AI’s weaknesses.
Thoughtworks’ warning is therefore specific, not anti-automation: “We strongly caution against using it for production code” when “vibe coding” means minimal review. The safe alternative is supervised acceleration—agents produce drafts and tests, while people retain responsibility for intent, evidence, security and operation.
Bottom line
AI makes implementation cheap, so understanding and verification become the differentiators. Keep changes small, make evidence visible, automate repeatable checks, and assign a human who owns the outcome. Teams that improve those conditions can turn faster generation into faster delivery; teams that skip them will mainly generate larger queues and quicker defects.
