Microsoft Foundry’s built-in Code Interpreter runs Python in a Microsoft-managed sandbox using dynamic sessions in Azure Container Apps. Microsoft says each session is isolated by a Hyper-V boundary. The public documentation explains the main operational behavior—where sessions run, how they handle files and network access, and how long they remain active—but does not disclose the runtime image, kernel, package versions, or detailed host configuration.
How does Microsoft Foundry Code Interpreter work?
An agent can use the Code Interpreter tool to execute Python for analysis, chart generation, and iterative problem solving. Microsoft documents the execution environment as dynamic sessions in Azure Container Apps, with each session isolated by a Hyper-V boundary. This describes the published architecture; it is not a detailed account of how Microsoft constructs the virtualized environment or configures its hosts. Microsoft Learn’s Code Interpreter documentation provides the service-level description.
The sandbox runs in the same Azure region as the Foundry project. Sessions are isolated from one another: if an agent invokes Code Interpreter in separate conversations at the same time, Microsoft says those calls create separate sessions.
Can Code Interpreter access the internet or the agent’s network?
Microsoft says the Code Interpreter dynamic session cannot make outbound network requests and does not inherit the agent subnet configuration. These limits apply to the documented Code Interpreter session; they should not be read as a statement that every component of Foundry lacks network access. For a custom runtime, network behavior depends on its separately configured environment.

How does it handle files?
The built-in tool can use files attached for analysis and return generated outputs, such as charts, for download. In Microsoft’s documented upload workflow, an uploaded file is mounted at /mnt/data/{file-id}-{original-filename}. The example workflow uploads a CSV, enables the tool for an agent, requests a chart, and downloads the resulting file.
Microsoft lists supported formats including CSV, DOCX, PDF, PPTX, Python, TXT, XLSX, and ZIP, among others. An attachment does not imply that the interpreter can browse arbitrary local-machine files, user storage, or tenant data.

- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
How long does a session last, and how is it billed?
Microsoft Learn’s Code Interpreter article, last updated August 5, 2026, documents a default session active period of up to one hour and a 30-minute idle timeout. These are operational settings, not a guarantee that a particular workload will finish within that time. The tool documentation also notes that separate conversations using the tool concurrently create separate sessions.
Microsoft’s Foundry Agent Service FAQ, last updated September 25, 2026, says Code Interpreter is charged per session. Its example says continued instructions in the same thread during the one-hour active period incur the session charge once; concurrent sessions are charged separately. The pages establish that session charges apply, but do not provide a price to quote here. Check current pricing for the relevant service and region.

What is public—and what remains undisclosed?
Microsoft’s public documentation establishes the broad execution model and several practical behaviors, but not every low-level detail a reader might associate with “internals.”
| Documented | Not stated in the reviewed Microsoft pages |
|---|---|
| Python execution in a Microsoft-managed sandbox using Azure Container Apps dynamic sessions | Exact base image or operating-system build |
| Hyper-V isolation, same-region placement as the Foundry project, and no outbound network requests from the dynamic session | Kernel version and complete installed-package inventory or versions |
| Attached-file access, downloadable generated outputs, and documented session timing and concurrency behavior | Runtime image patching process, detailed host configuration, or per-session CPU and memory allocation |
| Per-session billing, with separate charges for concurrent sessions | Exact file deletion and retention mechanics after session expiry |
Those details should not be inferred from generic Azure Container Apps behavior or from other products called “Code Interpreter.” The documented claims above apply to the built-in Code Interpreter tool for current Microsoft Foundry agents.

When should you consider Custom Code Interpreter?
Microsoft offers a separate Custom Code Interpreter approach built around an MCP server and Azure Container Apps Dynamic Sessions. It is intended for deployments that need control over Python packages, container images, compute resources, or environment settings—for example, when an application needs custom packages or dedicated compute. These are options for the custom deployment, not settings Microsoft says users can change inside the built-in managed sandbox.
| Consideration | Built-in Code Interpreter | Custom Code Interpreter |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime control | Microsoft-managed runtime | Control over packages, images, compute, and environment settings |
| Maturity | Documented built-in tool | Preview; Microsoft says preview features do not carry an SLA and may have constrained capabilities |
| Networking | Documented dynamic session cannot make outbound requests | Depends on the custom deployment’s configuration |
| Operations and cost | Tool use is billed per session | Requires provisioning and managing the custom Azure Container Apps resources and their governance |
See Microsoft’s custom Code Interpreter configuration guide for the preview approach. A separate classic-agent Code Interpreter page discusses a planned retirement date for classic agents; that schedule is not a retirement date for current Foundry agents or this built-in tool. The classic-agent documentation is relevant only when dealing with that legacy experience.
