How to Enable End Task in the Windows 11 Taskbar

Turn on End Task to stop an app directly from its Windows 11 taskbar icon. The setting’s location depends on whether you’re running version 25H2 or earlier.

Turn on the taskbar’s End Task setting, then right-click an app’s taskbar icon to stop it without opening Task Manager. In Windows 11 version 25H2 and later, find the switch under Settings > System > Advanced, in the Taskbar section. In versions before 25H2, look under Settings > System > For Developers.

Enable End Task in Windows 11 25H2 and later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Advanced.
  3. Scroll to the Taskbar section and turn on End Task. Microsoft describes the setting as “Enable end task in taskbar by right click.” See Microsoft’s Advanced Windows Settings documentation.
  4. Right-click the app’s icon on the taskbar and select End task.

Find the setting in earlier Windows 11 versions

On Windows 11 versions before 25H2, open Settings > System > For Developers and enable End Task. Microsoft documented the earlier location on the Developer settings page. The 2023 announcement explains that enabling it makes End task appear in the app icon’s taskbar context menu: Windows Developer Blog announcement.

What End Task does

End Task stops the application from its taskbar icon, without requiring you to open Task Manager. Microsoft’s notes for Windows 11 Build 26100.1586 in the Release Preview Channel said the option no longer displayed a not-responding dialog before stopping a task in that update. That behavior is specific to the update described; Microsoft’s note does not establish that every current Windows build behaves identically. Read the Release Preview notes.

If End Task is missing

  • Check your Windows version. Look in System > Advanced on 25H2 and later, or System > For Developers on earlier versions.
  • Check whether the PC is managed by an organization. Microsoft says organization-managed devices may have Advanced settings toggles disabled by policy; organization-owned devices may also have Developer Mode disabled. See Microsoft’s developer settings documentation.
  • Do not enable Developer Mode just to use End Task. End Task is a separate taskbar setting; Developer Mode is not a requirement for this command.
