Auto-Localize Prices in React with react-currency-localizer-realtime

AllRatesToday documents a React component and hook for displaying converted prices, with keyless daily rates or a keyed real-time option.

According to AllRatesToday, react-currency-localizer-realtime can detect a visitor’s currency from their IP address and display a converted price in a React interface. Its documentation offers a LocalizedPrice component and a useCurrencyLocalizer hook. This is a price-display integration: the reviewed documentation does not establish that it changes the amount charged at checkout or handles payment settlement, pricing rules, or taxes.

How to show prices in a visitor’s local currency in React

The package takes a price and its original currency, then presents a converted amount based on the visitor’s detected currency, as described by AllRatesToday. The examples use basePrice and baseCurrency. For one price, the documentation demonstrates the LocalizedPrice component; for a collection of prices, it shows the useCurrencyLocalizer hook.

Install the package with:

npm install react-currency-localizer-realtime

AllRatesToday’s version 2.6 API specification, dated September 2026, lists React 16.8 or later for hook support. Its minimal hook example initializes a USD base currency and an API key, then converts a price after loading completes:

const { convert, isLoading } = useCurrencyLocalizer({
 baseCurrency: 'USD',
 apiKey: 'YOUR_API_KEY'
});

if (isLoading) return Loading price…;
return {convert(priceUSD)};

This illustrates the documented loading branch, not a complete application. Provide a clear fallback—such as the original base price—if rate retrieval fails. The reviewed documentation does not establish error-state behavior across package versions, so handle errors in a way that fits your app rather than assuming the package supplies a particular recovery flow.

Do you need an API key for React currency conversion?

Not necessarily, according to AllRatesToday’s developer page. It describes two modes. Rate cadence, coverage, and attribution are important differences to consider before choosing:

Mode Rates and coverage described by AllRatesToday Key and attribution
Keyless Daily ECB rates; around 30 currencies No signup required; the provider says the rendered result includes an attribution link
With API key Real-time mid-market rates; 160+ currencies Requires an API key; package-specific quota and pricing terms are not established by the reviewed documentation

These are the provider’s descriptions, not independently verified coverage or rate tests. The AllRatesToday API page also advertises a free plan with real-time rates, historical data, 160+ currencies, all endpoints, and official SDKs, but the reviewed sources do not provide a complete package-specific quota or pricing matrix. Check the current API and package terms before relying on a rate limit, currency list, or attribution condition.

What the package specification says about size and compatibility

AllRatesToday’s API Specifications version 2.6 (September 2026) describes the React package as approximately 10 KB minified and 4 KB gzipped, with no runtime dependencies beyond React. The same specification lists automatic IP-based currency detection, built-in rate caching, full TypeScript support, and SSR compatibility for Next.js and Remix. These are publisher specifications; they are not independent bundle measurements or compatibility tests.

If you compare this package with another currency-localization option, compare rate source and update cadence, detection method, API-key requirements, currency coverage, attribution, caching, server rendering, dependencies, and behavior during loading or failure. The available documentation does not support an independent performance or accuracy comparison.

What currency localization changes—and what it does not

Conversion changes the numeric amount shown to the visitor. The reviewed package documentation describes displaying localized prices; it does not say that the package changes a merchant’s checkout charge, settles a payment in the visitor’s currency, or applies the merchant’s tax and pricing rules. Treat checkout currency and display currency as separate concerns unless your commerce platform or payment integration explicitly connects them.

The name is also easy to confuse with react-currency-localizer, a similarly named library. The package discussed here is specifically react-currency-localizer-realtime; check the exact package name when installing or reviewing documentation.
