If your TV has an Ethernet port and a cable can reach your router or network switch, connect it directly with Ethernet. If Ethernet cannot reach the TV room but the room has a usable coax outlet, MoCA adapters can use the coax wiring as the in-wall part of a wired network. A coax jack alone is not the same as a TV’s Ethernet network connection: the adapters provide the bridge.
Coaxial vs. Ethernet for connecting a TV to a home network
These options differ mainly in the cable path and equipment. Ethernet runs from a router or switch straight to the TV. MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) carries network traffic across coax between adapters; an Ethernet cable then connects the adapter near the TV to the TV’s LAN port.

Can I use the coax outlet behind my TV for internet?
Not by connecting the TV’s ordinary coax input and expecting it to act as an Ethernet LAN port. In the setup described by Verizon’s MoCA adapter information, a MoCA adapter bridges the home coax network to Ethernet. The TV connects to the adapter’s Ethernet port.

Before choosing MoCA, confirm that the coax outlet by the TV and the coax connection near the router belong to the same usable coax network. Check whether the router or gateway already supports MoCA. If it does not, the setup needs a compatible adapter at the router end as well as one near the TV. Wiring and provider equipment vary, so follow the instructions for the specific adapter.
How do I get Ethernet to a TV room with coax?
Use a direct Ethernet cable when a route is practical
- Check that the TV has an Ethernet LAN port.
- Run an Ethernet cable from that port to a LAN port on the router or network switch.
- Use the TV’s network settings to connect over its wired connection, following the TV’s instructions.
Use MoCA adapters when coax is the available route
- Check the router or gateway manual for built-in MoCA support. If it does not provide MoCA, include a compatible adapter at the router end.
- At the router end, connect the adapter to a router LAN port with Ethernet and to the home coax network as directed by the adapter’s guide.
- At the TV-room coax outlet, connect a compatible MoCA adapter to the coax. If the outlet must also serve a TV or set-top box, the installation may require a splitter; follow the adapter’s wiring instructions.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the TV-room adapter to the TV’s Ethernet LAN port.
- Follow the adapter and TV instructions to complete setup, then check that the TV reports a wired network connection.
Verizon’s MoCA Ethernet Adapter User Guide illustrates the router-to-adapter Ethernet connection and coax connection, including a splitter arrangement when coax also serves TV equipment. Other adapters may use different instructions.

What should I check before buying MoCA equipment?
- Coax continuity: Confirm the outlet at the TV and the coax connection at the router end are connected through the home’s wiring in a way the adapters can use.
- MoCA at the router: Find out whether the router or gateway supports MoCA. If not, plan for the adapter needed at that end.
- Shared coax use: If TV service or a set-top box also uses the outlet, check the adapter guide for the required splitter and connections.
- Shared network capacity: Verizon notes that bandwidth is shared among active MoCA devices, so the MoCA link is not a separate dedicated allocation for each device.
- Product certification: The MoCA Alliance says certified products undergo independent compliance and interoperability testing. Its certified products list can help when comparing models, but certification cannot guarantee that a particular home’s coax installation will work or deliver a particular result.
Which connection should you choose?
Choose direct Ethernet when you can run a cable from the router or switch to the TV: it is the most straightforward wired path and requires no MoCA adapters. Choose MoCA when usable coax reaches the TV room but Ethernet does not, and you can confirm a compatible coax path and MoCA support or adapters at both ends. Neither option’s real-world performance can be determined from the connection type alone; the home wiring and equipment matter.
