For a routine return, contact the seller first: the seller handles the order and approves the refund. The money usually goes back to the card or account used at checkout, so check that account’s statement—not just your wallet’s activity. If a seller will not resolve an eligible problem, ask the card issuer or payment-account provider about its dispute process. PayPal may also offer a separate buyer-protection claim, with eligibility and deadlines that depend on the claim and country.
First identify how you paid
“Digital wallet” can describe different payment arrangements. Google Pay and Apple Pay may pass a linked card or account payment through to a merchant, while PayPal has its own buyer-protection process for eligible transactions. The route you used affects where a refund appears and which dispute options may apply.

- Google Pay checkout: Google says it does not hold or process funds for these purchases; the payment is handled through the payment method used at checkout. Google’s explanation of paying on an app or website.
- Apple Pay: A merchant refund goes back to the payment card used with Apple Pay. Apple’s instructions cited here are for UK support. Apple’s Apple Pay refund instructions.
- PayPal: Check the transaction in PayPal and the applicable Buyer Protection terms. Depending on how the payment was funded, a card issuer may also have a chargeback process; these are distinct routes, and the sources do not establish which one will succeed in a particular case. For a normal return, contact the seller
For a change-of-mind return, exchange, or other ordinary return, begin with the merchant’s return policy and customer service. The seller has the order and is responsible for handling the return and issuing an approved refund. Keep the order confirmation or receipt and your correspondence so you can refer to the transaction and the seller’s decision.
This is different from reporting a purchase you did not authorize or claiming that an item never arrived, was defective, or was materially different from its description. Those issues may qualify for a dispute or protection claim rather than an ordinary return, and applicable policy and deadlines vary. The guidance here concerns third-party online or app purchases—not a wallet provider’s own products, in-store tap-to-pay returns, gift-card balances, or subscription cancellation rules.

Where the refund goes and how long it may take
An approved refund generally returns to the payment method used at checkout, not necessarily to a visible wallet balance or wallet transaction history. Google says refunds for Google Pay checkout purchases go back to the payment method; it also says an external-purchase refund may take 2–4 weeks to post. Apple says an Apple Pay refund goes back to the payment card automatically and may take several days to appear on the card statement. That timing is Apple’s UK support guidance, not a guarantee for every bank or country. Apple’s Apple Pay refund instructions.

Check the statement for the card or account that funded the purchase as well as the wallet’s activity. If you used Apple Pay and the merchant asks for the card number’s last four digits, find the Apple Pay card number in Wallet on the device used for the purchase. Apple notes that this number differs from the physical card number.

If the merchant says it refunded you but the money is missing
- Check the payment account’s statement. Look for a credit to the original card or account; a refund may not appear in wallet history.
- Allow for the relevant posting estimate. Google gives 2–4 weeks for an external-purchase refund; Apple says several days for an Apple Pay refund. Your issuer’s posting time can vary.
- Ask the merchant for a trace reference. For a Google Pay purchase, Google advises asking the merchant for the Acquirer Reference Number (ARN) or another trace number if it says the refund was sent.
- Contact the bank or card issuer. Give it the trace reference and ask it to investigate the refund. If you paid from an account rather than a card, contact the institution that handles that payment method.

If the seller will not resolve the problem
For Google Pay purchases, Google directs customers with unresolved third-party purchase problems to the bank or card issuer. Contact the institution that issued the card or account used at checkout, explain whether the issue is a refused policy-compliant return, non-delivery, a materially different item, or an unauthorized charge, and ask about its dispute process and filing deadline. Do not assume that the wallet provider controls the issuer’s decision.
If you paid through PayPal, review the relevant Buyer Protection claim route as well as any rights available through the card issuer that funded the payment. PayPal’s US terms state that applicable card chargeback rights may be broader than PayPal Purchase Protection. These are US PayPal terms, not universal deadlines or a summary of consumer law in other countries. Check the terms that apply to your account and location. PayPal’s separate chargeback explainer describes 180 days for customer initiation, typically 30 days for PayPal to dispute a chargeback, and up to 75 days for the card company to decide; those figures describe that explainer’s process, not a universal chargeback timetable. Keep the return and dispute routes distinct
- Returning an item under the seller’s policy: request the return or refund from the merchant.
- Tracking an approved refund: check the original payment account; ask the merchant for a trace reference if needed, then contact the issuer.
- Seeking help after an unresolved problem: contact the underlying card or account issuer, and check PayPal Buyer Protection separately if the payment was made through PayPal.
Deadlines and eligibility are not interchangeable across wallets, issuers, claim types, or countries. The UK Apple guidance and US PayPal terms cited here should not be read as a complete cross-country legal analysis.
