The right backend depends on what your metrics describe. Use Amazon CloudWatch for AWS resources and operational monitoring, Grafana Cloud when you want a hosted, multi-source observability layer with PromQL workflows, and PostHog when the dashboard is about product usage and user behavior. These tools address different jobs, so decide what each metric should help you understand or do before comparing features or prices.
Compare the three backends by the job they need to do
| Backend | Best fit | How metrics reach the dashboard | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon CloudWatch | AWS resource and application operations | Publish custom metrics through OpenTelemetry or the CloudWatch PutMetricData API; use CloudWatch dashboards and alarms. |
Region, metric path, dimensions, retention needs, and separate usage meters. |
| Grafana Cloud | Hosted observability across AWS and other sources, especially where teams use PromQL | Ingest CloudWatch metrics through metric streams or scrape them across regions and accounts; query ingested metrics in Prometheus format with PromQL. | Collection design, AWS-side costs, Grafana product usage, billable series, and required plan features. |
| PostHog | Product usage, funnels, and user-behavior analytics | Use product analytics ingestion and insight workflows; confirm current details for the specific use case. | Whether the operational monitoring features, event volumes, queries, retention, and alerting meet your requirements. |
CloudWatch is an AWS monitoring service for resources and applications, with metrics, alarms, logs, and dashboards. Its dashboards can combine telemetry views, including across accounts and Regions. See the CloudWatch overview and dashboard documentation.

Grafana Cloud is the clearest fit when the goal is a hosted observability layer rather than an AWS-only view. Its CloudWatch integration offers both a metric-stream route using Amazon Data Firehose and a scrape route across regions and accounts. Grafana stores ingested CloudWatch metrics in Prometheus format for PromQL queries, and documents tags and prebuilt dashboards for common AWS workloads. PostHog belongs in the comparison when “custom metrics” means questions about product adoption, funnels, or user behavior. It should not be assumed to offer feature parity with infrastructure monitoring backends. Check the PostHog documentation for the particular analytics, query, retention, and alerting requirements you need to support.

Choose according to metric meaning and audience
Use CloudWatch for AWS operations
Choose CloudWatch when the people using the dashboard need to monitor AWS resources or applications and want metrics, alarms, and dashboards in the AWS monitoring service. Classic CloudWatch metrics are identified by metric name, namespace, and dimensions, and a metric exists in the Region where it was created. AWS says a metric expires after 15 months without new data. Confirm the appropriate metric path and retention behavior in the CloudWatch metric concepts documentation.
Use Grafana Cloud for a hosted, multi-source view
Choose Grafana Cloud when you want CloudWatch data alongside other sources in a hosted observability workflow, or when PromQL is important to how your team queries metrics. Decide whether to stream or scrape data and map the AWS accounts and Regions in scope before implementation.

Use PostHog for product questions
Choose PostHog when the audience is making product decisions from usage and behavior data. For infrastructure health or operations, first confirm that its current capabilities cover the monitoring and alerting job; the documented product-analytics fit alone does not establish equivalence with CloudWatch or Grafana Cloud.

Plan ingestion, querying, and operational response
Ingestion determines where telemetry moves and which systems must be configured and paid for. CloudWatch accepts custom metrics through OpenTelemetry or PutMetricData. With Grafana Cloud, CloudWatch metrics can be collected via streaming or scraping. The choice affects the collection path, account and Region scope, and AWS permissions to arrange. If Grafana Cloud is the destination, account for both the AWS-side collection or API use and Grafana-side ingestion.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Also match the dashboard to the action that follows it. A threshold alarm intended to prompt an operational response is a different workflow from an analytical dashboard used to interpret a product funnel. Establish who owns each metric, which source is authoritative, how quickly the data must update, and what response the view should enable. Check the selected service and plan for the alerting and operational features you require rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Estimate cost from the workload, not a headline rate
There is no reliable one-line price comparison without a workload model. CloudWatch can meter custom metrics, API requests, dashboards, and alarms as distinct cost sources. AWS says custom metrics are metered only when sent and prorated by the hour; rates depend on Region and usage. Check the current CloudWatch cost guidance for the metric path and Region you plan to use.

Grafana Cloud uses usage-based pricing with separate meters for its products. Its pricing guide lists metrics per 1,000 billable series and separate measures for visualization, logs, traces, profiles, and other offerings. A CloudWatch-to-Grafana setup may therefore create costs on both sides of the integration. The Grafana Cloud pricing and usage guide explains units and directs users to rate tables or account billing details; it does not make one price point a universal total.

- Define the decision. Write down whether the dashboard is for AWS resource health, multi-source operations, or product behavior.
- Map metric sources and owners. Identify the emitting systems, responsible team, AWS accounts and Regions, and who will act on an alert or insight.
- Specify data needs. Set required update frequency, history, resolution, queries, and alert behavior; verify these against the current product and plan.
- Choose the collection path. For CloudWatch, select the appropriate publishing method. For Grafana Cloud, decide between metric streams and scraping. For PostHog, validate that product analytics ingestion matches the intended questions.
- Model usage and check both bills. Estimate series, cardinality, frequency, retention, requests, dashboard users, and any additional products. Recheck regional pricing and account-specific billing details before rollout.
Where comparisons need qualification
The three services should not be ranked as though they were interchangeable dashboards for the same workload. CloudWatch and Grafana Cloud have documented AWS metric collection and monitoring paths; PostHog is relevant here for product analytics. Detailed current PostHog infrastructure-monitoring parity and pricing are not established by the cited product documentation, so validate those specifics before treating it as an operational backend. Pricing, meters, plan allowances, and retention terms can change and should be checked for your region, account, and selected plan.
