Use Playwright when you need to control a browser, prepare page state, capture a particular element, or test visual changes. If you want a hosted screenshot API with clean captures and usage-based billing rules, try ScreenshotNeo first.
What is the difference?
Cloudinary URL2PNG is an add-on for generating screenshots of public websites from dynamic Cloudinary URLs. Its strongest fit is producing an image asset—such as a preview or thumbnail—that can then be transformed and delivered through Cloudinary. The feature requires the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on; see Cloudinary’s URL2PNG documentation and its delivery-type reference.
Playwright is browser automation software. Its Page API navigates to a URL and captures the rendered page, while Playwright Test adds screenshot assertions for visual comparisons. In short, Cloudinary is the more direct route from public URL to managed image asset; Playwright gives you control over the browser and test workflow.

| Compare a page with a saved visual baseline in tests | Playwright Test | Its toHaveScreenshot() assertion supports screenshot comparisons and requires the Playwright test runner. Visual comparisons |
These recommendations follow the documented feature sets; they are not a benchmark. The available evidence does not establish that either option is universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable.

When Cloudinary URL2PNG makes sense
- Your input is a public website URL and your output should be an image asset.
- You already use Cloudinary to transform or deliver images and want the generated screenshot to fit that pipeline.
- You need documented capture options such as viewport, user agent, or delay rather than a general browser automation workflow.
Cloudinary says URL2PNG transformation URLs are required by default to be signed or eagerly generated, to help avoid unplanned dynamic screenshot costs. Account settings can allow unsigned add-on transformations, so check your account’s current configuration before building request URLs. The add-on console lists commercial terms, but prices and allowances can change; consult Cloudinary Add-ons for current details.
When Playwright makes sense
- The page needs browser actions or setup before the screenshot.
- You need a full-page capture, an element-specific capture, or screenshot bytes to pass to other code.
- You want screenshots to be part of automated UI or visual-regression tests.
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a baseline on its first run and compares later captures. Its screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing them. For useful comparisons, keep baseline and test environments consistent: Playwright notes that output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Filter or mask volatile content where appropriate. Playwright visual-comparison documentation

What to account for before choosing
Capture purpose
Decide whether the screenshot is a delivered product image or evidence in a test. A generated preview naturally belongs in an image pipeline; a screenshot whose correctness depends on interactions or assertions belongs in a browser test workflow.
Control and repeatability
A hosted URL-to-image flow avoids building a browser capture workflow for straightforward public-page images. Playwright gives more control, but repeatable visual comparisons require control over the browser and its execution environment. Neither product should be assumed to handle every adjacent use case equally well.

Authorization and cost control
For Cloudinary URL2PNG, account for the documented default that URLs must be signed or eagerly generated unless your account settings allow unsigned transformations. Do not infer a current per-screenshot price from old or account-independent figures; check the live add-on listing and applicable account terms.
