To stream a looping video from Google Drive to YouTube Live, download the video to the computer running OBS, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its server URL and stream key. Drive stores the file; OBS sends the live video. Test the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
Before you start
- Make sure you can download the Drive file. The owner’s sharing permissions or an organization’s settings may prevent downloads.
- Install OBS Studio and confirm the video plays with the audio you intend to broadcast.
- Have access to the YouTube channel’s YouTube Studio account. If this is the channel’s first livestream, activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Use only video and audio that you have permission to livestream.
Step 1: Download the video from Google Drive
- Open the file in Google Drive and use the download option. Google documents the process in Download a file.
- Save it on the computer that will run OBS, then open it once to check that it plays and that the intended audio is present.
- If downloading is unavailable, ask the file owner or administrator for access. A Drive preview is not a substitute for a local media file in the OBS workflow described here.
OBS Media Source plays local media files. Its documented formats include MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; see the OBS Media Sources guide.

Step 2: Create or select a YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream, or select the scheduled stream you want to use. For an event scheduled in advance, use the encoder details associated with that event.
- Find the stream’s server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS is the encoder in this setup. YouTube’s current setup steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- Open OBS and select the scene that should show the video. If you need a new scene, add one in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and add Media Source. Give it a recognizable name if prompted.
- Choose the local video file. Check Loop so playback starts again after the file finishes.
- Check the OBS preview: confirm the picture fits the canvas and the audio meter responds when the clip plays. Adjust the source’s position or size if needed.
The OBS documentation defines the Loop option as controlling whether the file plays again after playback completes. Test the particular video and audio transition: the documentation does not promise gap-free loop boundaries for every file.

Looping a rotation of several files
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and use its Loop Playlist control. VLC must be installed for this source to be available in OBS. OBS notes that VLC Video supports a playlist, unlike a single-file Media Source. Test the order and transitions before going live.
Step 4: Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- If YouTube is available as a service, select it and follow the connection options shown in OBS. Otherwise, select the custom server option and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest; its settings guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Do not share screenshots or recordings that expose the stream key. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.

Step 5: Set output quality and test the stream
Choose settings your upload connection can sustain steadily. YouTube’s published H.264 guidance gives these examples:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingestion guidance values, not a guarantee that your internet service can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube also lists CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its documented recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance when choosing values.

- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Listen for audio and watch moving video in the preview. Test with sound and motion representative of the real broadcast, as YouTube recommends.
- Review stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate to a level your upload connection can hold reliably.
- For a scheduled event, select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin the public broadcast.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for different viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable input stream from OBS.
Step 6: End the broadcast and plan for archiving
When finished, stop streaming in OBS and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as an archive guarantee for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or longer; arrange separate recording or archive plans if you need a copy.

Common problems and fixes
- OBS cannot open the file: Confirm it downloaded fully and plays locally. Try a format supported by OBS Media Source, such as MP4 or MOV.
- The file will not download from Drive: The owner’s sharing permissions or organization settings may restrict downloading. Request the required access from the owner or administrator.
- The video ends instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop. If using a playlist, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
- There is no picture or sound in the YouTube preview: Check the OBS preview and audio meter first, then verify the selected stream and that OBS is sending output. Confirm the video’s audio plays locally.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the selected stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The preview reports poor stream health or buffering: Check the upload connection and reduce the encoder bitrate until it is stable. YouTube’s bitrate figures are ingest guidance, not proof of available upload capacity.
- Loop transitions have a pause or audio discontinuity: Test the exact file before broadcasting. OBS documents looping, but does not guarantee seamless transitions for every file.
Or let it run in the cloud
With OBS, the computer, OBS itself, the network connection, and the YouTube stream all need to remain operational. For an unattended prerecorded YouTube broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off; the service loops uploaded videos and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
