Compare matched slow and fast requests at each layer before changing settings: Cloudflare’s documented default Proxy Read Timeout is 125 seconds, and a slow but successful seven-second response is not evidence that this limit was reached.
What a 7s+ response does—and does not—tell you
The request path can include the client, Cloudflare’s edge, the origin network, Traefik, and the application behind Traefik. A delay measured only at the browser or client covers more of that path than any one server-side timing field. Without an endpoint, status code, request identifier, and timings from the same request, the cause of this intermittent high latency remains undetermined.

Cloudflare documents a default Proxy Read Timeout of 125 seconds for the 524 response path. A 524 means Cloudflare connected to the origin but did not receive a timely response; a 522 indicates a TCP connection problem. A successful response that takes seven seconds is below the documented timeout and does not establish either failure. The 125-second default is not a target or a useful threshold for diagnosing a slow successful response. Cloudflare documents that Enterprise customers can configure a higher limit under specified conditions; do not change that setting unless your measurements and status codes point to that issue. How to capture useful slow and fast samples
Start with several slow requests and nearby fast requests to the same endpoint. Keep the time window narrow enough to correlate logs, and record the request attributes that might affect processing or transfer.

Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance recommends identifying individual slow requests, measuring the delay, and reproducing the behavior. A direct-origin request can be a useful controlled comparison, but preserve the correct host and TLS behavior. It is not proof that every visitor’s route is equivalent to the Cloudflare-proxied path.
Keep the comparison narrow: the same endpoint, method, and similar request and response sizes are more informative than unrelated requests observed in the same broad time range. Note redirects and browser request dependencies too; the page’s total load time may include work beyond the request being investigated.

What Cloudflare’s origin timing measures
In Cloudflare, open Speed > Origin Analytics and compare the affected endpoint and time range. Cloudflare reports origin response time at p50, p95, and p99. These percentiles describe the measured requests in the selected view; they are not a latency rate for your cluster or a prediction of an individual request.

It can include DNS resolution, TCP and TLS handshakes, request transmission, origin processing, and response receipt. Argo Smart Routing or Tiered Cache routing can contribute when enabled. That is why Cloudflare’s figure can be higher than application-only execution time.

Compare originResponseStatus with edgeResponseStatus for the same request or time window. Cloudflare can return an edge error such as 520, 522, or 524 when an origin failure is involved, so the edge and origin statuses can differ. Interpret the pair alongside the request timings rather than treating a slow response alone as proof of a timeout.
What to inspect in Traefik access logs
Enable or inspect JSON access logs for the router handling the affected request. Traefik documents these fields for separating request time from upstream time:

Duration: overall request-processing duration.OriginDuration: duration of the response from the upstream origin.Overhead: processing overhead attributed to Traefik.OriginStatusandDownstreamStatus: status codes from the origin and the response sent downstream.
Compare the fields for the same request, not just averages from a wider interval. Use the units and field definitions for the Traefik version you run. Origin and downstream status codes may differ when middleware changes a response. An empty or zero origin status can indicate that handling ended before a backend was reached.
Confirm that the relevant router is actually covered. Traefik supports observability at global and narrower scopes; logs, metrics, or traces that are not enabled for the route cannot establish what happened to its requests.

Use the timing pattern to choose the next investigation
The patterns below are ways to narrow the investigation, not diagnoses of a particular cluster. Validate each against matched requests and the boundaries each metric actually measures.

Also compare cache outcome and status-code pairs. A cache hit does not follow the same origin-bound timing path as a miss. For a proxied request that did reach the origin, compare Cloudflare’s edge and origin status with Traefik’s downstream and origin status; the pairs help identify where a response changed or an error surfaced.
If Cloudflare Tunnel is in the request path
The reported setup does not establish whether Cloudflare Tunnel is used. If it is, inspect cloudflared logs alongside Traefik logs and check cloudflared’s configured local service address. Cloudflare documents that a tunnel can be healthy while cloudflared cannot reach that service—for example, if the service is unavailable or its configured protocol or port is wrong. A healthy tunnel status alone therefore does not establish that the local service is reachable.
Make one change only after the measurements point to it
Keep the slow and fast samples, Cloudflare timings and status codes, Traefik JSON records, and—if applicable—cloudflared logs tied together by timestamp and request identifier. Change a relevant component only after the matched measurements localize the delay; then repeat the same comparison to see whether that change affected the slow requests. The available information does not identify a specific faulty component or justify a particular configuration change.
