Sometimes, but after more than a year the odds of recovering the old number are limited. There is no universal grace period: the answer depends on the original carrier, country, account type, why service ended, and whether the number has been released or assigned to someone else. Contact the original carrier and ask it to check the number’s current status before buying a replacement SIM or adding credit.
What can be recovered: the SIM card or the number?
A SIM card and the phone number linked to it are different things. A carrier may issue a replacement SIM for an account that is still eligible, but that does not automatically restore service or reclaim a number the carrier has released. The carrier must check the number’s live status.

Ask whether the account is suspended or terminated, whether the number is still held for you, and whether it has entered a recycling or quarantine period. General policy pages cannot establish the status of a particular number.
Why there is no universal one-year rule
Carriers set different deadlines for different situations, including prepaid inactivity, unpaid accounts, plan expiry, and registration failures. The examples below are country- and circumstance-specific; none creates a general right to recover a number after a year.

| Carrier or authority | Published rule and scope |
|---|---|
| Reliance Jio, India | Its policy says prepaid service may be deactivated at the company’s discretion after 90 days of specified non-use. For qualifying non-use deactivation, it describes reactivation within 15 days, subject to a Rs. 20 payment, re-KYC, and applicable recharge. The page also describes safe custody for postpaid accounts during continued non-use. Jio policy |
| Vodafone Qatar | Prepaid terms allow reactivation within 180 days from the last prepaid recharge by contacting customer care to unbar and reactivate the number. They also say service becomes unavailable if another plan is not purchased within 120 days of balance expiry and reserve a right to reuse the number. Vodafone Qatar terms |
| T-Mobile, United States | Its prepaid support page warns that accounts in Not Paid status for more than 120 days may be canceled and the number lost; most prepaid accounts cancel automatically after 120 days in that status under the listed conditions. This does not mean every number is reassigned exactly on day 120. T-Mobile prepaid account support |
| Cambodia regulator | A 22 December 2025 announcement requires operators, starting 1 January 2026, to allow reactivation by top-up for numbers expired no more than 180 days, retain balances during that period, and send at least two reminders before retention ends. That period is shorter than a year. Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia announcement |
| Hong Kong regulator | An Office of the Communications Authority notice dated 24 February 2023 covers a special case: prepaid cards suspended for failure to complete real-name registration by the deadline. The card had to be unexpired and retain value; the operator was to reactivate service within no more than two days after registration, depending on registration volume. This is not an ordinary inactivity rule. OFCA real-name registration notice |
| Orange Egypt | Its FAQ says prepaid lines are deactivated after 90 days from last use and may be reactivated within 15 days after that period. For postpaid lines, it gives 180 days from last use followed by a 15-day reactivation period. Orange Egypt FAQ |
These policies show why the date and reason for deactivation matter. A reactivation window may run from the last recharge, the expiry of a balance, a period of non-use, or an unpaid status—not necessarily from the day you noticed the SIM stopped working.
What to do before replacing the SIM
- Gather the account details. Identify the original carrier and country, whether the account was prepaid or postpaid, and your best estimate of the last use, payment, recharge, or plan-expiry date.
- Contact the original carrier through an official channel. Use its app, published phone number, website, or an authorized store. Ask a representative to check whether the number is active, suspended, terminated, reserved, or released for reassignment.
- Ask what proof and steps apply to your account. Confirm whether the carrier requires identity documents, account details, payment, re-registration, or an in-person visit. Do not assume another country’s policy applies.
- If recovery is possible, follow the carrier’s instructions. Ask whether service can return on the old SIM or whether the carrier must issue a replacement SIM or eSIM for the existing number.
- If the number cannot be recovered, secure accounts that use it. Update phone numbers used for login or account recovery, and follow each service’s official recovery process if you can no longer receive verification messages.
Why a top-up or new SIM may not help
A top-up can be part of recovery only when the carrier permits it for that number and the account remains within the applicable window. A replacement SIM may instead activate new service with a different number. Confirm that the old number is still recoverable before spending money on a refill or replacement card.
