Choose a cloud GPU from the workload outward, not from the model name. First calculate model, activation, and checkpoint memory; then decide whether the job is single-GPU, multi-GPU on one server, or distributed across servers. For pre-training, high memory, fast GPU-to-GPU links, RDMA networking, and dependable capacity usually matter more than the lowest hourly quote. For inference, right-size memory and latency, avoid paying for training-only interconnects, and compare cost per useful output at your expected utilization.

Price at least one hyperscaler and one GPU-focused provider using identical GPU counts, host resources, storage, region, and transfer assumptions. On-demand capacity is the safe default, reservations suit predictable long runs, and Spot is economical only when checkpointing and restart are already engineered.

Start with the workload you actually need

GPU “speed” is not one number. Training throughput, inference latency, memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and interconnect bandwidth can point to different choices. Google Cloud summarizes the selection problem this way: “Choosing the right GPU model depends on the computational characteristics, memory requirements, precision formats, and scalability needs of your workload.”

Write down the requirements

  • Model memory: include parameters, optimizer states, gradients, framework overhead, and the maximum context or sequence length.
  • Activation and batch memory: estimate peak usage at the batch size and precision you will run, not only the size of the model file.
  • Checkpoint size and frequency: large checkpoints affect storage, write time, and restart cost.
  • Target throughput or latency: tokens per second, samples per second, requests per second, and tail-latency goals determine whether a larger GPU is actually useful.
  • Parallelism: identify tensor, pipeline, data, or expert parallelism before selecting a multi-GPU server.
  • Availability window: note the region, quota, launch deadline, and whether an interruption is acceptable.

Use the smallest configuration that leaves practical headroom. A GPU that is technically large enough but runs at 98% memory utilization can fail when a longer prompt, larger batch, or new library version adds overhead.

GPU classes and the specifications that change the decision

GPU Memory Memory type GPU-to-GPU connection noted by Google Cloud Typical fit
NVIDIA H100 80 GB HBM3 NVLink full-mesh bandwidth up to 900 GB/s Large-model training, demanding fine-tuning, and high-throughput inference
NVIDIA A100 40 GB or 80 GB HBM2/HBM2e Configurations expose up to 600 GB/s NVLink bandwidth Established training stacks, fine-tuning, and inference workloads that fit its memory
NVIDIA L4 24 GB GDDR6 PCIe Gen 4 Efficient inference, media and general accelerator workloads, and smaller fine-tunes
NVIDIA T4 Not stated in the cited price listing Not stated in the cited price listing Not stated Lower-cost inference and development where its available memory and throughput are sufficient

The H100’s 80 GB capacity and higher-bandwidth HBM3 leave more room for large batches and long contexts than a 40 GB A100. An 80 GB A100 can still be the better value when software compatibility, availability, or a lower price outweighs H100 performance. The L4’s 24 GB and PCIe Gen 4 connection suit independent inference replicas; they are not a substitute for a tightly coupled training node.

Memory capacity is the first gate

If the model and runtime cannot fit, raw compute does not matter. Quantization, parameter-efficient fine-tuning, activation checkpointing, offloading, and smaller batches can reduce memory pressure, but each changes speed, quality, or engineering complexity. Leave room for tokenizer buffers, communication libraries, and framework allocations. For multi-GPU jobs, determine whether your software shards memory effectively; four GPUs do not automatically behave like one GPU with four times the memory.

When interconnect and RDMA are worth paying for

Single-GPU inference generally does not benefit from a premium training fabric. Distributed training can spend a large fraction of each step exchanging gradients or activations, so the connection between GPUs becomes a first-order requirement.

Single GPU

Choose based on memory, kernel support, latency, and price. PCIe is usually adequate when no peer-to-peer synchronization is required. Compare completed work per dollar rather than theoretical FLOPS.

Multiple GPUs in one server

Look for NVLink or another documented high-bandwidth GPU fabric when tensor or pipeline parallelism requires frequent exchanges. Google Cloud lists up to 900 GB/s NVLink full-mesh bandwidth for H100 configurations and up to 600 GB/s for A100 configurations. Confirm that the specific VM exposes the topology your framework expects; a GPU model alone does not guarantee a particular link layout.

Multiple servers

Distributed pre-training usually needs RDMA-capable networking, a supported collective-communication stack, and predictable placement. Azure’s guidance is explicit: “For training, select SKUs that support RDMA and GPU interconnects for high-speed data transfer between GPUs.” Verify NIC count, topology, bandwidth, oversubscription, and whether the provider can allocate the full node count together.

For inference, Azure advises: “For inference, avoid SKUs with InfiniBand, which is unnecessary.” That does not prohibit fast networking for a multi-replica service; it means not buying a training fabric that your serving architecture cannot use.

Training and inference lead to different purchases

Pre-training and large distributed jobs

  • Prioritize memory capacity, HBM bandwidth, NVLink or equivalent intra-node fabric, RDMA between nodes, and reservation-backed capacity.
  • Benchmark scaling efficiency at the planned GPU count. A cheaper GPU with poor scaling can cost more for the same completed tokens.
  • Include checkpoint storage and restart time in the schedule. Losing a long run to a capacity interruption can erase Spot savings.
  • Use the provider’s accelerator-optimized families where available. Google Cloud recommends A4X Max, A4X, A4, A3 Ultra, A3 Mega, or A3 High for model pre-training and recommends reservations for these workloads.

Fine-tuning

Fine-tuning may fit on one GPU with parameter-efficient methods even when full pre-training would require a cluster. Measure peak memory with the actual sequence length and evaluation batch. If the run is repeatable and scheduled, a commitment can lower cost; if experiments are exploratory, preserve flexibility.

Inference

  • Size for the model’s precision, maximum context, KV-cache growth, concurrency, and target tail latency.
  • Prefer more modest GPUs when they meet the service-level objective. Several smaller replicas can deliver better availability and utilization than one oversized accelerator.
  • Measure tokens per second and cost per useful output at realistic utilization, including idle time, autoscaling floor, and preprocessing.
  • Do not pay for InfiniBand or a large training node unless your serving design actually uses it.

Provider and price comparison

The figures below are published 2026 price anchors, not universal quotes. They are only comparable after normalizing GPU count, region, host CPU and RAM, local storage, network, billing granularity, commitment term, and whether the price covers one GPU or a complete multi-GPU node.

Provider and configuration On-demand Spot or commitment What the figure covers
Google Cloud T4 $0.35 per GPU-hour $0.22 per hour with a one-year commitment; $0.16 per hour with a three-year commitment GPU-hour listing; associated VM, storage, and transfer costs still require checking
Google Cloud L4 virtual workstation $0.56004024 per GPU-hour Lower one-year and three-year commitment prices are listed, but exact amounts are not stated here Virtual workstation GPU-hour listing
CoreWeave North America, 8-GPU HGX H100 $49.24 per hour $19.71 per hour Spot Eight-GPU node; region and node shape are part of the quote
CoreWeave North America, 8-GPU HGX H200 $50.44 per hour $20.93 per hour Spot Eight-GPU node; region and node shape are part of the quote
CoreWeave North America, 8-GPU A100 $21.60 per hour $9.65 per hour Spot Eight-GPU node; region and node shape are part of the quote

A provider’s hourly GPU number may exclude the CPU host, boot and attached disks, object storage, snapshots, public IPs, orchestration, and data transfer. Ask for a like-for-like monthly estimate and divide by measured useful output, not by GPU hours alone. Recheck live prices and availability immediately before purchasing because regions, quotas, and discounts change.

On-demand, reservations, and Spot

On-demand

Use on-demand capacity for a deadline, an uncertain experiment, or a service that cannot tolerate eviction. It costs more but preserves flexibility and usually has the simplest operational path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reservations and commitments

Commit only after you know the GPU type, region, node shape, and utilization. Google Cloud’s one-year and three-year T4 figures illustrate the trade-off: $0.22 and $0.16 per GPU-hour versus $0.35 on demand. A discount is not a saving if the accelerator sits idle or the workload moves to another region.

Spot

Azure describes Spot instances as using unused datacenter capacity at a discount. The discount is real only when your system can resume safely. Build automatic checkpointing, externalize checkpoints to durable storage, detect eviction, requeue jobs, and cap the maximum lost work. Never use Spot for a latency-critical endpoint without a separate reliable capacity pool.

A practical buying workflow

  1. Estimate peak memory. Record parameter, optimizer, gradient, activation, KV-cache, and checkpoint requirements at the intended precision, sequence length, and batch size.
  2. Classify the topology. Decide whether the job is single-GPU, multi-GPU on one node, or multi-node. Mark any operation that requires NVLink, RDMA, or synchronized collectives.
  3. Shortlist two GPU classes. Select by memory and measured performance, not brand prestige. Keep one fallback class with compatible drivers and kernels.
  4. Define the service target. For training, specify time to a quality milestone. For inference, specify throughput, p50 and p99 latency, concurrency, and availability.
  5. Price identical configurations. Compare at least one hyperscaler and one GPU-focused provider. Include host CPU/RAM, boot and persistent storage, snapshots, object-storage operations, egress, and orchestration.
  6. Choose the billing model. Use on-demand for uncertain or urgent work, reservations for predictable long runs, and Spot only with tested checkpoint and restart automation.
  7. Validate capacity before committing. Check quota, region, lead time, maximum node count, placement guarantees, and whether the provider can supply all GPUs simultaneously.
  8. Validate the software image. Confirm driver and CUDA compatibility, framework versions, container support, NCCL or equivalent collective libraries, monitoring, and kernel availability.
  9. Run a representative pilot. Measure memory headroom, scaling efficiency, useful throughput, latency under concurrency, checkpoint duration, and restart behavior.
  10. Recheck the quote. Verify live price, availability, commitment terms, transfer rates, and support conditions immediately before purchase.

Provider capabilities to compare beyond the GPU

Decision area Questions to answer
Capacity Is the required GPU count available in the target region, and what quota lead time applies?
Networking Are NVLink, RDMA, InfiniBand, topology, and bandwidth documented for the exact SKU?
Storage Where do datasets and checkpoints live, what are durability and performance characteristics, and what are read/write charges?
Data transfer What are ingress, inter-region, internet-egress, and cross-zone charges?
Operations Are drivers, images, Kubernetes integration, logs, metrics, alerts, and autoscaling supported?
Reliability What happens during host failure, maintenance, eviction, or a regional shortage?
Support and compliance Which support tier, service limits, data-residency options, and certifications apply to your workload?

Google Cloud’s accelerator-optimized families include separate recommendations for inference, while Microsoft’s current examples include ND H200 v5, ND MI300X v5, ND H100 v5, NDm A100 v4, and ND A100 v4. Treat these names as a starting shortlist: the latest SKU is not automatically the best match for your memory, software, or regional constraints.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Comparing unlike quotes

An eight-GPU node at one provider cannot be compared with a single-GPU virtual machine at another. Normalize GPU count, host resources, storage, network, region, and billing term before calculating a percentage saving.

Choosing by peak benchmark

A vendor’s theoretical throughput may not reflect your model, precision, sequence length, or communication pattern. Benchmark the complete training step or serving stack, including data loading and synchronization.

Ignoring utilization

A fast GPU that spends much of its time waiting for data, batching, or synchronization can cost more than a slower, better-utilized option. Monitor GPU duty cycle, memory use, input pipeline time, and queueing.

Underestimating egress

Moving checkpoints or generated outputs between regions and providers can erase a GPU discount. Keep data near compute when possible and price the final transfer path before selecting a region.

Assuming quota equals availability

Approved quota does not guarantee that a provider can place a large, contiguous cluster. Request the exact node count and placement early, and keep a tested fallback region or GPU class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Spot without restart drills

A checkpoint policy that has never been restored is not a recovery plan. Test interruption detection, checkpoint integrity, environment recreation, and job resubmission before relying on Spot economics.

Decision rules you can apply quickly

  • Need distributed pre-training: start with H100-class or equivalent high-memory nodes, verify NVLink and RDMA topology, and reserve capacity once the run is scheduled.
  • Need a model that fits one accelerator: compare A100, H100, and L4-class options using measured latency or throughput and memory headroom.
  • Need inexpensive, fault-tolerant experimentation: use Spot with frequent durable checkpoints and an on-demand fallback.
  • Need a production endpoint: optimize cost per useful output at target concurrency, keep reliable baseline capacity, and autoscale only after measuring cold-start and loading time.
  • Need predictable long-term capacity: commit only after a pilot confirms region, software compatibility, utilization, and node shape.

Bottom line

The best cloud GPU is the least expensive configuration that meets your memory, topology, throughput, latency, reliability, and data-location requirements at the same time. H100-class hardware earns its premium for memory-heavy or communication-bound training; A100 remains practical when its memory and software fit; L4 and T4 can be economical for smaller or inference-focused workloads. Make the final choice from a normalized quote and a representative benchmark, then recheck capacity and pricing immediately before deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an H100 worth it for inference?

Only when its memory, throughput, or latency advantage lowers the cost of your required output. If the model fits comfortably on an L4 or A100 and utilization is modest, a smaller GPU can deliver a better cost per request.

How many GPUs do I need for training?

The count follows peak memory, desired time to a quality milestone, and parallelism efficiency. Establish the minimum memory-fitting configuration, then benchmark scaling at two or more GPU counts; adding GPUs that mostly wait on communication increases cost without proportional progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the listed CoreWeave prices the cost of one GPU?

No. The cited CoreWeave figures are hourly prices for complete eight-GPU HGX H100, H200, and A100 nodes in North America. CPU, storage, transfer, and other charges still need to be checked in the provider quote.

Can I compare Google Cloud’s T4 price directly with an eight-GPU H100 node?

No. The T4 figure is a per-GPU-hour listing, while the H100 figure is an eight-GPU node price. Normalize GPU count, host resources, region, storage, networking, and billing terms first.

When should I use a reservation instead of Spot?

Use a reservation or commitment for predictable, long-running jobs where the region and GPU type are known. Use Spot only when interruption, checkpoint, and restart behavior has been tested and the workload can tolerate delays.

What should I test before a multi-node purchase?

Test the exact VM or node image with your drivers, CUDA and collective libraries; verify GPU topology and RDMA; measure scaling efficiency, checkpoint time, restart time, and behavior at the intended node count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does more GPU memory always make inference faster?

No. More memory prevents out-of-memory failures and can support larger batches or contexts, but latency depends on kernels, precision, model architecture, batching, and host or network overhead. Benchmark the serving workload at its target concurrency.
