Cloud Forests Explained: How They Form, Store Water, and Support Biodiversity

Cloud forests are mountain, coastal-range, or island forests that are regularly immersed in fog or low cloud. Their leaves, branches, mosses, trunks, and epiphytes intercept airborne droplets, turning atmospheric moisture into “horizontal precipitation” that reaches the ground as fog drip or stemflow. This extra input can sustain streams and ecosystems, while cool, stable conditions and dense epiphyte growth create unusually specialized habitat.

They do not manufacture additional rain. They capture moisture that would otherwise remain in passing cloud, and the amount varies sharply with elevation, exposure, vegetation, and local weather. That combination makes cloud forests valuable water infrastructure and biodiversity refuges, but also highly vulnerable to warming, fragmentation, and land conversion.

What makes a forest a cloud forest?

Frequent immersion in fog or low cloud

A cloud forest is defined by its atmospheric setting rather than by one tree species. It develops where moist air repeatedly meets a forest canopy as fog or low cloud. The setting may be a large inland mountain, a coastal range, or a small oceanic island. Persistent cloud contact can occur at different elevations: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) describes common elevations of 2,000–3,000 metres on large inland mountains, about 1,200 metres on coastal ranges, and as low as 500 metres on small oceanic islands.

At those boundaries, air can be saturated even when conventional rain gauges record little precipitation. Wind pushes cloud through the vegetation, allowing droplets to collide with foliage. A forest that is merely high or wet is not automatically a cloud forest; regular cloud or fog exposure is the defining condition.

How terrain creates the cloud belt

Most cloud forests form through orographic lifting. Moist air is forced upward when it encounters a mountain or ridge. As the air rises, it cools, and water vapour condenses into tiny droplets. In other locations, persistent winds carry a low cloud layer into a slope or island ridge. The resulting cloud belt may be narrow, shifting seasonally or changing height from one side of a mountain to the other.

The forest itself then modifies that cloud. A rough, multilayered canopy provides far more contact area than bare rock or short grass. Mosses, lichens, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and other epiphytes add three-dimensional surfaces that hold droplets and slow their movement.

How cloud forests collect water

Interception, fog drip, and stemflow

  1. Cloud reaches the canopy. Wind carries droplets through branches, leaves, hanging moss, and epiphyte mats.
  2. Surfaces intercept droplets. Droplets adhere to waxy leaves, rough bark, moss, and other surfaces. They merge into larger drops as exposure continues.
  3. Water moves downward. Gravity pulls drops from foliage to the forest floor as fog drip. Some water travels along leaves and branches, then down trunks as stemflow.
  4. Soil and roots store the input. Litter, moss, porous soil, and roots slow the flow, allowing infiltration and later release to springs and streams.

FAO describes this process as forests intercepting atmospheric moisture, which condenses on and drips from foliage, adding moisture to the soil. The process is often called horizontal precipitation because it supplements rain arriving from above. It does not increase rainfall itself; it transfers existing cloud moisture into the ecosystem.

How much extra water can interception provide?

Measurements differ by site, season, canopy structure, and instrument design. FAO’s State of the World’s Forests 2003 reported horizontal precipitation equivalent to 4–85% of annual rainfall in studied tropical montane sites. The same source reported average horizontal precipitation of 0.2–4 millimetres per day. These are ranges from studied locations, not a universal cloud-forest conversion factor.

FAO’s Forests and Water report (2011) gives another way to express the effect: fog interception can add hundreds of millimetres of water per year. In wetter cloud forests, the additional input is often 15–20% of rainfall; on exposed ridges with lower precipitation, it can reach 50–60%. The apparently different percentages reflect local conditions and the way studies define rainfall and fog interception.

Measure Reported value Qualification
Horizontal precipitation 4–85% of annual rainfall Studied tropical montane sites; FAO, 2003
Average horizontal precipitation 0.2–4 mm per day Studied tropical montane sites; FAO, 2003
Additional water in wetter cloud forests 15–20% of rainfall FAO, 2011
Additional water on exposed, drier ridges Up to 50–60% of rainfall FAO, 2011; site-dependent

What happens after water reaches the ground?

Cloud-forest soils, roots, leaf litter, and ground-cover plants act as a temporary reservoir. They reduce the speed at which water runs off, promote infiltration, and release moisture gradually to springs and streams. Roots and ground cover also reduce erosion and the amount of sediment delivered downstream. Protection is not absolute: extreme storms can overwhelm even intact forest and move large quantities of soil and debris.

The hydrological result is therefore a combination of direct fog capture and improved storage, not simply a larger annual rainfall total. In dry seasons, the steady trickle from saturated vegetation and soil can be disproportionately important to downstream users.

How much water do cloud forests provide to people?

Dry-season flow and water quality

Cloud forests can help maintain dry-season streamflow and provide relatively clear water by slowing runoff and trapping sediment. The benefit depends on watershed geology, soil depth, forest condition, storm patterns, and the amount of cloud interception. It is not correct to claim that every forest increases water yield: outside cloud-forest conditions, forests often consume substantial water through evapotranspiration, and removing them can increase measured annual streamflow. Cloud forests are unusual because intercepted fog adds water that ordinary rainfall measurements miss.

La Tigra, Honduras: a documented historical example

FAO cites an IUCN/WWF account reporting that the cloud forests of La Tigra National Park supplied more than 40% of Tegucigalpa’s water for approximately 850,000 people. This is a historical case reported in the cited material, not a current utility statistic or a guarantee that every protected cloud forest supplies a comparable share.

Why cloud forests are exceptionally biodiverse

Stable, cool microclimates

Frequent cloud cover moderates temperature, limits evaporation, and keeps humidity high. Conditions can remain comparatively stable even when nearby lowlands experience stronger heat or seasonal dryness. Species adapted to this narrow climate may occupy only a small elevational band, so a modest shift in temperature or cloud height can remove much of their available habitat.

Epiphytes create extra habitat

Cloud-forest trees are often shorter, twisted, and heavily coated with mosses. Their branches support bromeliads, orchids, ferns, lichens, and liverworts. These plants are not merely decorative: they catch droplets, hold organic matter, and create nesting, shelter, and feeding sites for insects, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. Water captured high in the canopy can be released slowly, forming miniature wet habitats before it ever reaches the soil.

Endemism and specialized animals

Because cloud forests are isolated by valleys, ridges, and changes in climate, populations can diverge and become locally endemic. UNEP-linked assessments emphasize that cloud forests contain a disproportionately large number of species and endemic forms relative to their area. FAO examples of cloud-forest fauna include mountain gorillas, Andean spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, resplendent quetzals, and threatened amphibians. The list is illustrative rather than exhaustive; many less-famous plants, fungi, invertebrates, and microorganisms are equally restricted to these habitats.

How large is the world’s cloud-forest area?

No single global area figure is settled because researchers use different definitions of “cloud forest,” cloud-frequency thresholds, elevation data, and mapping methods. A 2004 UNEP-WCMC potential estimate put cloud forests at 380,000 square kilometres, less than 2.5% of tropical forests. An alternative model by Mulligan and Burke (2005) estimated 2.2 million square kilometres, or 14.2%, of tropical forests affected by cloud. These figures should not be treated as competing measurements of exactly the same category.

Estimate Area and share Why it differs
UNEP-WCMC potential estimate, 2004 380,000 km²; less than 2.5% of tropical forests Cloud-forest potential mapped using that assessment’s definition
Mulligan and Burke model, 2005 2.2 million km²; 14.2% of tropical forests Alternative model of cloud-affected forest area

Cloud forests compared with other land covers

Hydrological and ecological outcomes depend on what a cloud forest is being compared with and on the watershed context. The following framework captures the main differences without implying that every site behaves identically.

Comparison axis Cloud forest Lowland tropical forest Cleared or heavily converted land
Primary water input Rain plus intercepted fog or low cloud Primarily rainfall; regular fog interception is less characteristic Rainfall, with little vegetation available to intercept cloud
Typical setting Mountain, coastal-range, or island cloud belt Lower elevations outside persistent cloud immersion Any elevation after agriculture, grazing, roads, or development
Dry-season behavior Fog input and soil storage can sustain streamflow Depends strongly on rainfall, soils, and evapotranspiration Faster runoff and less biological storage are common after clearing
Erosion and sediment Roots and ground cover reduce delivery, except during extreme storms Roots and litter can also protect soil Disturbance often increases erosion risk
Biodiversity pattern High specialization and endemism in compressed habitat belts High diversity, often across broader elevational ranges Habitat simplified and fragmented
Warming sensitivity High when the cloud deck rises above the canopy Varies by species and moisture regime Already exposed to the effects of habitat loss and heat

What threatens cloud forests?

Land conversion and fragmentation

Agricultural expansion, grazing, coffee production, fuelwood extraction, roads, resorts, and scattered development remove canopy and divide remaining habitat. Fragment edges are hotter, windier, and drier than interiors. Fragmentation also breaks the elevational connections that species may need as local conditions change.

A rising cloud deck

Climate warming can lift the altitude at which air reaches saturation, raising the cloud deck above a forest that once remained immersed. The result may be less fog interception, drier moss and epiphyte communities, altered stream recharge, and loss of species restricted to the former cloud belt. The size and direction of change vary by mountain, wind regime, and regional climate, but the mechanism is a central concern for conservation planning.

Why damage can be difficult to reverse

Cloud forests depend on linked relationships among canopy structure, epiphytes, soils, wildlife, and atmospheric moisture. Once trees are removed, exposed slopes can lose humidity and soil, making natural recolonization difficult even if land use later stops. FAO states that cloud-forest loss may be irreversible because of these complex relationships.

How cloud forests should be protected

Inventory the cloud belt accurately

Conservation begins with mapping where forests are actually exposed to frequent cloud, not simply drawing a broad elevation line. Inventories should record canopy condition, fog frequency, springs, soils, endemic species, and connections to adjacent habitat. Because global estimates vary by method, local measurements are essential for water and biodiversity decisions.

Keep intact forest on ridges and recharge areas

FAO guidance is to maintain cloud forests as forest and protect them for their water-production, erosion-control, and biodiversity values. Priority areas include exposed ridges that capture large amounts of fog, headwaters that feed downstream systems, and fragments that connect otherwise isolated populations.

Reduce pressure around protected areas

  • Limit new roads, resort construction, and settlement in cloud-exposed headwaters.
  • Control grazing, fuelwood extraction, and agricultural expansion at forest edges.
  • Use restoration that rebuilds native canopy and ground cover rather than planting a single fast-growing species.
  • Monitor fog frequency, cloud-base height, streamflow, sediment, and indicator species together.
  • Plan elevational corridors so species can move if suitable cloud conditions shift uphill.

“Cloud forests should be maintained as forest because they are important for water production, erosion control and biodiversity, and generally unsuitable for other sustainable uses.”

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Forests and Water (2011)

The practical takeaway for watershed decisions

When a watershed contains regularly cloud-immersed forest, its value cannot be judged from rainfall totals alone. Measure the fog captured by the canopy, the water stored in soil and litter, and the timing and quality of downstream flow. Compare those services with the risks created by clearing, fragmentation, and a rising cloud deck. Protecting the forest preserves a water-capture system and a concentrated store of endemic life; replacing it with another land use can remove both at once.
