The 3-2-1 approach is a practical way to avoid relying on one device or location:

- Two storage devices or media: do not make every copy depend on the same device or storage system.
- One offsite copy: keep a copy in a different location so a local disaster or theft does not take every copy at once.

Which creator and business files to protect
Do not treat “the video” as a single file. A finished upload may be replaceable only if its source material and production assets survive. Make an inventory of the files needed to recreate, revise, publish, or account for your work.

- Original footage and audio: camera originals, voice tracks, music you have rights to use, and other source media.
- Editing projects: project files, graphics, linked assets, fonts where licensing permits, and any files needed to reopen the timeline.
- Publishing assets: final exports, thumbnails, captions, descriptions or scripts you maintain, and approved versions of promotional material.
- Business records: contracts, invoices, licenses, tax documents, and records needed to operate the channel or business.
Decide how quickly each category must be available after a loss. The cited guidance does not set a creator-specific retention period, so choose retention based on your production cycle, obligations, storage capacity, and the consequences of losing an older file rather than treating a particular number of days as a universal rule.
Build a backup setup that has independent copies
For an individual creator
A practical arrangement is the active computer or working storage, a separate external drive for local recovery, and an offsite backup. The local drive can make recovery of large footage faster; the offsite copy helps if the computer and local drive are both lost or damaged. Do not rely on one external drive alone: it can fail, be stolen, or be affected by the same incident as the computer.

For a small team or shared library
A NAS can provide pooled local storage for a team, but it is still a local destination. Pair it with an offsite backup, and make sure access controls and recovery history fit your needs. RAID or another drive-redundancy arrangement can help keep a storage system operating through some drive failures, but it does not by itself protect against deletion, ransomware, theft, or loss of the location.

Compare destinations by recovery, not just capacity

These destinations are complementary, not interchangeable guarantees. Cloud storage is not inherently immune to ransomware, and a NAS, RAID, sync folder, or single drive alone does not make a complete backup plan. Sync is not the same as backup
Sync keeps files aligned across locations. That is convenient for collaboration and access, but an unwanted deletion or encrypted file can also be replicated. A backup should provide a way to recover an earlier or protected copy, such as version history, delete protection, or a separate copy not continuously exposed to the same account and devices. Check the service’s retention and recovery settings rather than assuming that a synced folder is a backup.
Protect backups from ransomware and accidental deletion
- Separate access: avoid giving every everyday device or user unrestricted ability to delete every backup.
- Keep an isolated copy: disconnect an external drive between backup sessions or use an appropriate protected or immutable cloud version where available.
- Use versioning or delete protection: confirm that older versions can be recovered and understand the applicable retention and deletion rules.
- Encrypt sensitive files: protect copies containing business, financial, or personal information, and secure the credentials needed to decrypt them.
- Review alerts: check failed-backup notifications and storage warnings rather than assuming a scheduled job completed.
Isolation reduces the chance that one compromised account or device can reach every copy; it does not make a backup invulnerable. Set a routine you can verify
- List the folders and records that matter. Include source footage, project files, exports, thumbnails, captions, and business records. Note where each lives and who needs access.
- Choose backup destinations. Build toward three copies across two storage devices or media, including one offsite copy. Identify which copy will be offline or protected from ordinary deletion.
- Schedule backups around how you work. Back up new footage and project changes regularly enough that a failure would not erase an unacceptable amount of work. The appropriate cadence depends on how often files change and how much work you can afford to recreate; the cited sources do not prescribe one schedule for all creators.
- Check completion and protection settings. Review alerts, available capacity, version history, deletion protections, access permissions, and encryption for the services and devices you use.
- Restore a sample file. Recover a file to a separate location and open it. For a project, check that the project file and its required media are usable together; a successful upload or backup status alone does not prove recovery will work.
- Repeat the restore check. Test periodically and after meaningful changes to your tools, storage, or workflow. Keep the recovery steps and necessary account access available to the people responsible for restoring files.
Backups do not recover your YouTube account
A copy of your videos cannot restore channel access if you lose control of the Google account. Secure the account separately with recovery options and strong verification. YouTube’s channel-security guidance recommends setting up 2-Step Verification and choosing a passkey as the second verification method for stronger protection against threats such as phishing. Media backups and account recovery address different failure modes, so include both in your continuity plan. YouTube Help: channel security
