Neither cloth nor disposable diapers is automatically cheaper, easier, or better for the environment. Cloth adds washing and drying to the household workload; disposables avoid that laundry but require repeat purchases and contribute to waste. The best fit depends on local prices, washing arrangements, childcare routines, disposal systems, and which environmental impacts matter to you.
At a glance: what changes between the two systems
| Factor | Cloth diapers | Disposable diapers |
|---|---|---|
| What you do repeatedly | Wash and dry diapers after use; results vary with appliance efficiency, load size, wash frequency, and drying method. | Buy replacements and dispose of used diapers. |
| Household cost | Depends on purchase quantity and price, laundry utilities and detergent, how long the diapers are used, and whether they are reused for another child. No current universal total is established. | Depends on local prices, usage, and diapering duration. No current universal total is established. |
| Environmental comparison | Production, laundering, drying, reuse, and end-of-life treatment all matter. Findings vary by region and household behavior. | Production, disposal route, and regional conditions matter. Findings vary by impact category and study assumptions. |
| Convenience | Requires a reliable plan for washing, drying, and handling used diapers. | Avoids household diaper laundry, but requires ongoing shopping and disposal. |
Are cloth diapers cheaper than disposable diapers?
There is no well-supported universal cost winner. A useful comparison needs local prices and a defined diapering period; the purchase price alone does not capture the cost of either system.

Build a household comparison
- Set the time period and expected use. Estimate how many diapers your household will use during that period, and whether the same cloth diapers could be used for another child.
- Price the products locally. Add the number of cloth diapers you expect to buy and the disposable diapers you expect to purchase. Use prices available to you rather than a generic online total.
- Include cloth laundry costs. Estimate the additional wash and dry cycles, detergent, and the water and energy rates that apply to your home. Account for whether diapers can be washed with other laundry and how often you would use a dryer.
- Compare the same assumptions. Keep diapering duration and expected use consistent. If you plan to reuse cloth for another child, include that scenario separately rather than treating it as guaranteed.
This calculation can show which system is less expensive for your circumstances, but the result will change with product prices, utility rates, laundry habits, and reuse. The available lifecycle assessments do not provide a current family budget.

Cloth shifts some recurring work into laundry: used diapers need to be handled, stored, washed, and dried. Disposables remove that household wash task, but still require repeat purchases and a way to store and discard used diapers.
#1 Best Overall
- COMFORTABLE: Made from 100% cotton for a soft, gentle feel on sensitive baby skin. Free from any plastics or dyes that may irritate your baby’s skin.
- ABSORBENT: Designed to be extra-absorbent with prefolded 3-ply center panel that keeps your little one dry and happy.
- BIRDSEYE WEAVE FABRIC: Lightweight fabric made from many small fine yarns, woven in a pattern that is soft and absorbent.
- VERSATILE: After using as a cloth diaper or liner, continue to use as a burp cloth, cleaning/dusting rag, car washing cloth and more.
- EASY CARE: Wash before first use. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach when needed. Tumble dry low or hang to dry.
Questions to weigh against your routine
- Laundry access: Consider whether you have dependable access to a washer and dryer, and whether your usual wash schedule can accommodate diaper loads.
- Drying method: Air drying or using a tumble dryer changes both the household routine and the environmental comparison.
- Childcare and travel: Consider how diapers will be handled away from home and whether your childcare arrangements accept the system you choose. The sources reviewed do not establish a typical-family time winner or quantify childcare acceptance.
- Shopping and storage: Compare keeping a supply of disposables on hand with managing a reusable set and its washing cycle.
Convenience is therefore a fit question, not a general ranking. A household with easy laundry access may experience the work differently from one without it; a household that wants to avoid diaper laundry may prefer the disposable routine.
Are cloth diapers better for the environment?
There is no single environmental winner established across all studies and impact categories. The answer can change with geography, household washing and drying, product lifetime, and how used diapers are treated. Climate impact is only one category; water use, resource impacts, and waste do not necessarily rank the options the same way.

Why washing behavior changes the result
A 2023 CE Delft lifecycle assessment commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management modeled Dutch household systems. It found that washing conditions can materially affect washable-diaper results: less-efficient appliances, frequent small loads, and tumble-drying all washed diapers can raise climate impact, while efficient appliances and more economical washing habits can improve the relative result. The report summary says washable nappies can be up to four times better for the environment in environmentally conscious households. That is a modeled upper result for the study context, not a general guarantee for every household. CE Delft’s 2023 assessment

Why geography and disposal assumptions matter
A 2020 screening lifecycle assessment focused on Brazil found cloth generally performed better under its modeled regional conditions, while also identifying water scarcity and washing-system choices as relevant. Its conclusion should not be transferred directly to another country or household. The Brazil-focused study

The UK evidence also needs context. The Environment Agency’s assessment published in 2005 examined UK diaper production, use, and disposal for 2001–2002; an updated UK lifecycle assessment followed in 2008. Both are historical assessments, not current universal answers. Environment Agency’s 2005 assessment and its 2008 update.
In a written answer to Parliament on 10 October 2023, UK minister Lord Benyon said the Defra-funded comparison covered 18 equally weighted environmental impact categories. Reusable diapers were higher in some categories, while disposable diapers were slightly higher in global-warming potential; the government said there was no clear overall consensus. That is the UK government’s account of that comparison, not proof that every lifecycle assessment reaches the same result. UK Parliament written answer HL10469

What a daycare laundry service can—and cannot—tell you
A separate CE Delft study published in December 2025 examined centralized washing for daycare centres, using a pilot involving 30 centres. It reported a 56–75% lower carbon footprint for centralized washable diapers than disposables in that setting. The study spread production and waste-treatment impacts over 300 to 450 uses; that is a modeling assumption, not a guaranteed lifetime for every diaper. This result is specific to the daycare service model and should not be used as a household estimate. CE Delft’s daycare assessment

How significant is disposable diaper waste?
US EPA data show that disposable diapers contributed 4.1 million tons to US municipal solid waste in 2018, or 1.4% of total municipal solid waste generation that year. The EPA identified no significant recycling or composting for this category in 2018. These are historical US figures, not current totals or a description of every locality’s waste system. Quick Recap
How to choose for your household
- Choose based on your actual costs: Compare local product prices and, for cloth, the added laundry expenses over the same diapering period.
- Choose based on your available routine: Be realistic about washing frequency, load size, drying, storage, and childcare or travel needs.
- Choose based on the environmental tradeoff you prioritize: If climate is your main concern, consider energy-efficient washing and drying choices, but do not assume climate results settle water, resource, or waste impacts.
- Keep the comparison local: Household washing, daycare services, regional water and energy conditions, and disposal routes are different systems; results from one should not be presented as the answer for another.
