Crashes and missing assets can come from game files, addons, or content a particular map or server requires, so no single fix covers every case. Work through the reversible checks below, starting with the symptom and where it occurs.
Identify the error and when it happens
Note whether Garry’s Mod crashes at startup, while loading, or during play. For visual or script errors, record whether they began after installing an addon or updating the game. Check whether the issue occurs on every map or only one, and in single-player, multiplayer, or both. These details help distinguish a local problem from a map-, server-, or addon-specific one.
- Purple-and-black checkerboard: The texture for an object or part of a map is missing.
- Large red ERROR sign: The Source Engine is indicating that a game model is missing.
- Crash: Note whether it is silent at startup or happens during map loading or play.
The Garry’s Mod Wiki FAQ (Facepunch Studios) explains: “If you’re seeing black and purple, you are missing the texture for a certain object or part of the map.” It also says: “The big red error signs are the Source Engine’s way of telling you that you are missing a game model.” Neither visual indicator identifies the cause by itself.
Repair missing or possibly damaged game files
Steam’s file verification is a supported first check for missing content and crashes. It checks the installed game files and may download replacements.

- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Garry’s Mod and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish before launching the game again.
Steam notes that a few local configuration files may normally fail verification. That message alone is not a reason to repeatedly run the check or assume the installation is broken.
Check whether a map or server needs content you do not have
Checkerboards and ERROR models can also appear when a map, server, or addon relies on content from another game that is absent or not mounted. Check the requirements for the specific map or server and confirm that any relevant game content is installed and mounted. Facepunch’s guidance on mounting content describes how mounted games supply assets; a missing or incorrect mount configuration can also lead addons to report absent content.

Do not assume that every missing asset requires buying another game. First identify the dependency for the map, server, or addon that displays the error, then verify the relevant installation and mount setup.
Test whether an addon is causing crashes or errors
If the problem began after adding an addon, disable that addon first. Facepunch documents enabling and disabling addons through the game’s Addons menu in Addons Usage. If that does not isolate the issue, run a temporary clean test without Workshop or folder/legacy addons.

- In Steam Library, right-click Garry’s Mod and select Properties.
- Find the Launch Options field.
- Enter
-noworkshop -noaddons. - Launch the game and try to reproduce the problem on the same map or server, if possible.
- When the test is complete, remove both options from Launch Options to restore normal addon loading.
These parameters temporarily disable Workshop and folder/legacy addons, as described in Facepunch’s Command Line Parameters reference. If the issue disappears, re-enable addons individually or in small groups until it returns; the last group narrowed down is the best place to look for a conflict. Addons can add or alter game content and interact with other addons, so a conflict is possible even when no single addon is obviously broken.
For an addon-specific error, send its author the console error and clear steps to reproduce it, including the map or server and what you were doing when it appeared.

Troubleshoot crashes by stage
If the game crashes silently at startup
Facepunch’s crash-reporting guidance notes that a silent startup crash can be driver-related. Restart the computer, check for operating-system and graphics-driver updates from the official hardware vendor, and test with nonessential background software closed. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped. Steam’s general game-launch troubleshooting also recommends checking requirements and verifying files.
If it crashes while loading or playing
For some crashes involving mods or servers that use substantial video memory, Facepunch suggests reducing Texture Detail in Advanced Video Options. Test the change on the same map or server; it is a diagnostic option, not proof that video memory is the cause.

Compare your system with Steam’s published Garry’s Mod requirements, but treat them as a baseline rather than a diagnosis. Steam lists these figures:

These are Steam’s listed requirements for Garry’s Mod, accessed in 2026; meeting them does not guarantee that every map, addon, or server will run without a crash.
What to include when asking for support
If the checks do not resolve the fault, provide a reproducible report through the appropriate official support or bug-reporting channel. Include:
- What you were doing and the exact steps that trigger the issue.
- The map and server involved, and whether it happens on other maps.
- Whether it occurs in single-player, multiplayer, or both.
- Whether the issue remains with addons disabled using the clean-test options.
- The relevant console error or crash log, plus the crash dump if one is available.
Facepunch’s Crash Reporting page explains platform-specific reporting. Windows crash dumps may use the .mdmp extension, while dumps on x86-64 branches may use .dmp; Linux and macOS have different directions, so follow the instructions for your platform and branch.
