A listing photo, serial number, or convincing box cannot by itself prove that an iPhone is genuine. Vet the seller and return terms first, then check the actual phone for Activation Lock, prior-owner removal, repair history, battery health, carrier restrictions, and working features. A genuine iPhone can still be misrepresented in any of those ways.
What a listing check can—and cannot—tell you
“Fake iPhone” can mean a counterfeit device, but many risky listings offer a real iPhone with undisclosed damage, repairs, weak battery health, a network lock, or an unresolved link to the previous owner. Apple’s pre-owned buying guidance gives buyers checks for these conditions; it does not establish a universal way to authenticate a listing from photos or a serial number alone.

Treat packaging, accessories, a plausible price, and screenshots of device identifiers as details to assess—not proof that the physical phone in the listing is genuine. A consistent device identity is one check, not a guarantee.

- Check the seller’s identity and process. Prefer a seller who explains how pre-owned phones are inspected or certified. Ask what “certified” means and which checks the process covers; the label alone does not tell you.
- Get specifics about the actual phone. Ask for its exact model and storage, photographs of the device being sold, a clear account of physical damage, battery health, and Parts and Service History when available. Compare the answers with the listing and keep the seller’s written statements.
- Read the return policy before checkout. Note the deadline, eligible reasons, and how a return must be requested. A return option matters because some important checks are possible only once you can handle or set up the phone.
Apple’s advice is direct: “If the iPhone is Activation Locked, don’t buy it.” — Apple Support, “If you want to buy a pre-owned iPhone” (published March 23, 2026).
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Check the phone itself before accepting it
If you can inspect the iPhone in person, do so before handing over payment. For an online order, make these checks as soon as it arrives, while the return window is open.
- Inspect the physical device. Remove any case or accessory that hides it. Check the screen, sides, back, and connector for damage, and compare the phone with the listing’s photos and condition description.
- Turn it on and check its state. Apple says a pre-owned iPhone may show the Lock Screen, the Hello screen, or “iPhone Locked to Owner.” If it says “iPhone Locked to Owner,” do not buy it; if it arrived by delivery, return it.
- Confirm the previous owner has removed the device. If the phone is not erased, ask the seller to erase it, then begin setup. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, the phone is still linked to that owner. Do not take ownership until the link has been removed. The Hello screen indicates it is ready for the buyer to use. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
- Review details in Settings. After setup, open Settings > General > About to check model details, carrier-lock status, and Parts and Service History if that section is available. Check Settings > Battery for battery health.
- Test everyday functions. Try Wi-Fi, the buttons, camera photos and video, speakers, the microphone using Voice Memos, and display brightness. A listing description cannot substitute for testing the device you receive.
Interpret repair, battery, and network information carefully
Parts and Service History
On iOS 15.2 or later, a Parts and Service History section may appear under Settings > General > About, depending on the iPhone model and its repair history. Its availability is not guaranteed on every phone. Apple says an “Unknown” part can mean installation was incomplete, the part is nongenuine or was previously used in another iPhone, or it is not functioning as expected. Battery information may be unavailable if the battery is unknown or nongenuine. Treat this section as useful repair information, not a standalone verdict on whether the entire phone is counterfeit.

Battery health
Compare the battery information on the actual phone with what the seller stated. If battery-health details are unavailable, Apple notes that an unknown or nongenuine battery may be the reason; do not treat missing information as a healthy-battery result.

In Settings > General > About, “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone has no network-provider restriction. If a provider is listed instead, the phone can be used only with that provider. Check this against your intended network before accepting the phone.

What to do when a check fails
- Activation Lock or a former-owner setup request: Stop. Do not take ownership while the device remains linked to someone else. If an online purchase arrives with “iPhone Locked to Owner,” use the return process.
- Condition, battery, repair, or carrier details differ from the listing: Record the discrepancy and contact the seller promptly through the stated return process.
- The seller will not answer basic questions or the return terms are unclear: You cannot resolve the risk by relying on photos or a device-identifier screenshot. Consider not proceeding.
Keep the listing and seller’s written claims, inspect promptly on receipt, and act within the return policy’s deadline. Apple likewise recommends inspecting a pre-owned iPhone when it arrives and returning it if its condition is not as expected.
