Closing a terminal does not have one universal effect on a coding-agent plan. A plan might be saved conversation history, a thread-specific goal, or files and changes in a project workspace—and each can have different storage and recovery rules. First identify which tool and session you used; then resume that same session or task and check the project files separately.
What “the plan” might mean
Before trying to recover anything, separate the conversation from the work it describes. A saved transcript or objective can exist independently of the workspace that contains code changes. Conversely, files may remain in a project even if the original conversation is unavailable.

- Conversation or objective: the chat history, task context, or a thread-specific goal.
- Workspace: the project directory, worktree, or hosted virtual machine containing files and changes.
- Resume route: the command, task page, or editor session list that reopens the original context.
Where the plan is stored depends on the tool
| Tool or feature | Conversation or objective | Workspace and recovery | How to resume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Codex Goals | A Goal is persisted state attached to the thread where its context lives; it is not global memory or project instructions. | A Goal does not itself back up project files. | Return to the thread containing the Goal. |
| Codex Cloud | The cloud task is the place to return to continue unfinished work. | Tasks use isolated workspaces. Starting a new task creates a separate workspace and does not recover another task’s uncommitted changes. By default, saved VM state can be recovered for up to seven days after the last turn starts or the task is resumed; this is a VM-state window, not a conversation-history retention period. | Open the original task, not a new one. OpenAI’s Codex Cloud guide explains task and VM-state behavior. |
| Claude Code | Anthropic’s Help Center says sessions are stored locally per project directory. | Session access depends on the relevant local project context. | From the relevant project context, use claude --continue for the most recent session or claude --resume to choose a session. See Anthropic’s Claude Code user FAQ. |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | The developer-facing Session interface can retrieve stored conversation items and persist new user and assistant items after a run. | Storage depends on the integration: the TypeScript SDK documents OpenAI Conversations, MemorySession for local development, and custom backends. | Resume through the application’s session integration. This SDK behavior does not define storage for every Codex CLI or product session. See the Agents SDK Sessions guide. |
How to recover the same coding session
- Reopen the original context. Use the same cloud task, thread, or project directory rather than creating a fresh task or opening a different project.
- Use that tool’s documented resume route. For Claude Code, run
claude --continueorclaude --resumein the relevant project context. For Codex Cloud, return to the original task. - Verify the actual files. Inspect the project and its version-control status to confirm which changes are present. A recovered plan or transcript is not proof that its described edits are on disk.
- Commit important work. Save valuable changes to source control rather than relying on a conversation or a temporary workspace as a backup.
When you use VS Code to find sessions
VS Code’s session-management interface can discover supported external sessions, including Codex and Claude Code. VS Code describes a session as combining a workspace, code changes, and one or more chats; each chat has its own history and context. This can help locate a session, but it does not establish that every tool transfers all conversation context or workspace state.
If an external Codex session is still open in the other application, VS Code disables sending. Fully quit the other app, then retry. VS Code also supports exporting a chat session as JSON. See Microsoft’s Manage agent sessions in VS Code.
