Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A completed clone is not proof that Windows can boot from the new SSD. The target must contain the needed boot partitions, match the PC’s firmware mode, and actually be selected as the startup drive. Keep the original SSD unchanged until the target boots and you have checked important files. The steps below are for Windows; the right fix depends on your disk layout, firmware settings, and cloning tool.
First, protect both drives
Pause before erasing the source, formatting either disk, or running another clone over the destination. Samsung’s Data Migration manual warns that its cloning operation deletes existing data on the target; other utilities may have different behavior, so check the instructions for the exact tool you used. Back up important files separately where possible: a clone is not a substitute for an independent backup.

If the old SSD contains the only copy of important data and is disconnecting or reporting errors, prioritize preserving the data. Avoid repeated reads or writes and consider qualified recovery help. Age alone does not establish that a drive has failed.

Why a cloned SSD may not start Windows
The PC may still be booting from the old SSD
When both drives remain connected, the firmware may select the source drive or its Windows Boot Manager entry. Samsung’s manual says to place the target above the source in firmware boot priority, then verify that the operating system starts from the target. Firmware menus and labels vary by PC; consult the computer or motherboard manual for the correct setup or one-time boot-menu key.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
The clone may be missing boot partitions
A Windows UEFI system disk is more than the visible Windows volume. Microsoft’s documented deployment layout includes an EFI System Partition, a Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition, the Windows partition, and a recovery partition. A partition-only copy or a job that omitted hidden partitions may therefore leave the target without the expected boot structure. This is a possible cause, not proof that your cloning tool omitted anything.
Microsoft’s deployment guidance specifies an EFI System Partition minimum of 200 MB on 512/512e-byte-sector devices and 300 MB on native 4K-sector devices, plus a 16 MB MSR. These are layout requirements in that guidance, not a diagnosis or universal sizing rule for every existing clone. Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT partition guidance describes the layout.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Firmware mode and partition style may not agree
Microsoft’s compatibility guidance pairs UEFI boot with GPT and legacy BIOS compatibility with MBR. A mismatch can prevent a Windows installation from starting as expected. The Microsoft setup article discusses this relationship in the context of installation, so treat it as a compatibility principle—not an instruction to switch modes or repartition a disk without first identifying the current setup. See Microsoft’s MBR and GPT setup guidance.
The cloning utility may not support this drive combination
Migration tools have different supported source and destination drives, controller configurations, and prerequisites. Samsung describes Data Migration as a tool for migration to a Samsung SSD, warns that target contents are deleted, and lists an NVMe-driver prerequisite for its specified NVMe-target workflow. Those conditions apply to that utility and workflow, not to cloning software generally. Check the exact tool’s documentation for your drive models, SATA or NVMe interface, RAID or controller setup, Windows version, and any driver requirements. Samsung also notes that Magician features can vary for non-Samsung and OEM drives: Samsung SSD tools and support.

Check the clone in a safe order
- Record what is connected. Note the exact boot error, which physical SSD is the source and which is the target, their connection types, and whether both are installed. Identify disks by model and capacity rather than relying on drive letters, which can change between Windows and recovery environments.
- Check the selected startup drive. Open the PC’s firmware setup or one-time boot menu using the device-specific instructions. Select the target SSD or its Windows Boot Manager entry. If the PC starts, verify that Windows is running from the target before changing or erasing the source. Samsung’s Data Migration User Manual gives this same target-first priority check.
- Test the target independently when practical. After safeguarding important data, shut down and disconnect the source only if you can do so safely and reconnect it if needed. Try starting from the target alone. If it then fails, the source was likely supplying something needed during startup; the result still does not identify the exact missing partition or setting.
- Inspect the disk layout and firmware mode. In Windows recovery or another trusted environment, determine whether the relevant system disk is GPT or MBR and whether firmware is using UEFI or legacy compatibility. Do not infer either setting from a drive letter or a successful cloning progress bar.
- Review the cloning report and tool requirements. Check whether the job copied the whole disk or selected partitions, whether hidden partitions were included, and whether the utility supports the source/target combination and controller setup. Follow that specific utility’s documentation rather than applying another vendor’s driver or compatibility rules.
- Choose a repair only after the mismatch is clear. Avoid disk-cleaning, formatting, conversion, or boot-repair commands when you cannot confidently identify the target disk and its layout. The appropriate repair depends on the actual machine and partitions.
- If it still fails, preserve both copies and collect details. Record the PC model, Windows version, SSD models and interfaces, cloning tool and version, firmware mode, partition map, exact error, and which drives were attached during each boot attempt. These details help device-specific support distinguish a boot-selection problem from a layout, compatibility, or drive issue.
When MBR2GPT is—and is not—the next step
Microsoft’s MBR2GPT is for qualifying conversions from MBR to GPT; it is not a generic first response to every failed clone. Its documented workflow creates or reuses an EFI partition, installs UEFI boot files, changes partition metadata, and updates BCD. Microsoft also documents a possible outcome in which some BCD entries are not restored. Confirm that conversion fits the identified disk and firmware configuration, and protect the data before proceeding. The tool’s documented EFI partition size—100 MB, or 260 MB for 4K-sector disks—is specific to its conversion workflow and differs from Microsoft’s deployment-layout guidance above. See Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether to retry, repair, or restore
Choose the least destructive path supported by what you have verified. A retry may be reasonable if the source is readable, the target is backed up, and the tool supports both drives and the connection setup. A boot repair or conversion should wait until the disk map and firmware mismatch are known. If you have a separate system image and the clone cannot be made reliable, restoring that image may be more appropriate than repeatedly overwriting the destination. In every case, preserve a recoverable source or backup until the target has booted and important files have been checked.
