Wireless IP telephony is voice communication carried as Internet Protocol (IP) traffic over a wireless network link. In many business deployments, that link is Wi-Fi: a wireless phone connects to an access point, while the rest of the call may travel over the organization’s wired network and telephony systems.
What wireless IP telephony means
The term describes telephony that uses IP to carry voice and a wireless connection for a device’s network access. In an enterprise setting, the wireless link is often a Wi-Fi wireless local area network (WLAN). The endpoint might be a dedicated wireless IP phone; the access point connects it to the organization’s wider network.

“Wireless” describes the phone’s access link, not necessarily every segment of a call. Wi-Fi provides local wireless access, IP carries packets across networks, and telephony services handle call processing, signaling, and connections to other telephone networks. A call can pass from the phone over Wi-Fi to a wired LAN and then through gateways or other systems to its destination.
How a typical business Wi-Fi call works
-
A wireless IP phone associates with a Wi-Fi access point.

Yealink, Landline Phone, Classic Gray- Mid-level phone, ideal for professionals and managers with moderate call load
- Ergonomic design with adjustable display
- Built-in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
-
The access point bridges the wireless connection to the organization’s wired network.
-
Call signaling reaches call-control services. In Cisco’s documented system, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is used for call signaling.
-
The call’s real-time voice is sent as packets. Cisco identifies Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) for this voice traffic in its system.

This is a representative enterprise architecture, not a requirement that every wireless IP telephony system use the same products or configuration. Cisco’s administration guide discusses an implementation using wireless handsets, access points, call-control components, and network connections.
How it differs from related terms
-
Wired IP telephony: Voice services use IP, but the phone or endpoint connects to the LAN by cable rather than through a wireless access link.
-
Cellular telephony: The device connects through a cellular radio access network. That is different from a dedicated enterprise Wi-Fi IP phone.

What can affect call quality
A wireless IP call depends on both the WLAN and the telephony system. Cisco’s guide describes IEEE 802.11e and Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) support in its handset context to improve voice transmission reliability in a wireless environment. It also discusses prioritizing voice, video, and call-control traffic. These are implementation details, not settings that can be assumed for every vendor or network.
-
Coverage and roaming: The WLAN needs usable coverage where people make calls. Cisco describes users roaming across a campus or between floors while connected to a call, but the result in any deployment depends on its network design.
-
Capacity and traffic handling: The WLAN must support the number of concurrent calls and handle voice traffic appropriately alongside other network traffic.

Security and authentication: Handsets need to authenticate to the WLAN, and the system should protect communications. Security features described for one product are not a universal guarantee.

Compatibility: Handsets, access points, call control, and gateways need to work together as a system.
What a working system includes
A dedicated wireless IP phone is one possible endpoint, but an access point by itself does not create a telephony service. A working deployment also depends on WLAN coverage and capacity, compatible call-control services, and any gateways needed to connect calls to their destinations. Cisco’s 8821 and 8821-EX documentation provides a product example: it describes dual-band 802.11 handsets intended for use with Cisco Unified Communications Manager and access points in a private business communications network. That documentation establishes an example architecture, not present-day availability or a recommendation for a new installation.
The practical meaning is straightforward: wireless IP telephony puts an IP-based phone on a wireless network, usually Wi-Fi in a business setting. The phone’s wireless link is one part of a larger telephony system, and coverage, network handling, and component compatibility shape how well it works.
