Hellraiser: Revival has a clear connection to Resident Evil 7: assistant game director Aleksandra Pelivanovic named it one of the game’s major inspirations. But borrowing survival-horror mechanics is not the same as borrowing the design goal behind RE7. Capcom’s developers framed that game around intimate, personal fear; Revival adds stealth, melee and ranged combat, scarce ammunition, and powers of its own. That mix makes “the wrong lesson” a defensible criticism of its emphasis—not proof that the game is a clone or that every player will find it less frightening.
What the Resident Evil 7 comparison gets right
Hellraiser: Revival is a first-person, single-player survival-horror action game. Its connection to Resident Evil is not merely a resemblance noticed by players: in an August 28, 2025 hands-on preview, assistant game director Aleksandra Pelivanovic said, “Resident Evil 7, 8, and 4 were our big inspirations and references.” That establishes an acknowledged influence, not a one-to-one imitation or a verdict on how well the influence was used. The preview described familiar survival-horror ingredients: stealth, melee and ranged weapons, limited ammunition, and powers tied to the Genesis Configuration. The PlayStation Blog also discussed inventory management in terms of the Resident Evil games. Those are meaningful points of contact, but they do not by themselves show that the two games produce the same kind of fear or pace their encounters in the same way. (PlayStation Blog)

The lesson RE7 was trying to teach
Capcom’s account of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard describes a deliberate return to fear at a personal scale. Its developers asked how they could make contemporary players experience the fear associated with the original game, and discussed first person as a way to bring that horror close. The important comparison, then, is not simply “both games are first person” or “both have scarce resources.” It is whether the mechanics support a sustained feeling of vulnerability and dread. (Capcom News)
#1 Best Overall
- A New Story in Hellraiser's Canon – Unwittingly kickstart Pinhead’s ritual to unleash greater pain and pleasure than ever before.
- Harness the Power of the Box – Combine the unique, hellish abilities of the Configuration with an arsenal of earthly weapons to inflict bone-breaking, flesh-searing pain - or is it pleasure? - upon masochistic enemies.
- Fight Against Unholy Enemies – Take on hell's wretches, deviants, cultists, and even its most infernal priests in a story-driven horror survival game.
That distinction matters because action can change what scarcity means. Limited ammunition may make a player weigh whether to fight or evade, but if combat occupies a large share of the experience, the player can begin to think in terms of weapons, targets, and encounters rather than helplessness. This is an interpretation of the design trade-off, not a claim that RE7 contains no action or that Revival has no atmosphere.
Where Revival appears to take a different route
A launch-period GamesRadar review describes Revival as more linear and says combat takes up more of the game than its Resident Evil-like rooms and puzzles might suggest. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measured comparison or a universal player response. Still, paired with the documented combat options, it supports a specific version of the “wrong lesson” argument: Revival may borrow the visible grammar of modern survival horror without centering the intimate, fear-first rhythm Capcom described for RE7. The limitation of that argument is just as important. Revival is built around a different fictional world and its own supernatural device, the Genesis Configuration. A separate launch review points to an original Barker-inspired story, Resident Evil-style puzzles, and the Labyrinth’s distinctive design. Those elements complicate any claim that the game simply copies another franchise or has no identity beyond its influences. (Creative Bloq)
How the games compare on the evidence available
| Design question | Resident Evil 7: Biohazard | Hellraiser: Revival |
|---|---|---|
| Stated design emphasis | Capcom developers described a return to intimate, personal-scale fear and discussed first person as part of that approach. (Capcom News) | The director named RE7, RE8, and RE4 as major inspirations; the preview documents a blend of stealth, combat, scarce ammunition, and Genesis Configuration powers. (DBLTAP) |
| Combat and resource pressure | The cited design interview discusses horror intent, but does not establish a directly comparable combat share or ammunition figure. | The preview reports melee and ranged combat and limited ammunition. A launch reviewer characterized combat as more prominent than the puzzle-room presentation might imply. (DBLTAP; GamesRadar) |
| Exploration, inventory, and puzzles | The cited materials establish the comparison point for inventory management, but do not provide a matched account of both games’ exploration or puzzle structures. (PlayStation Blog) | The PlayStation Blog discusses puzzles and inventory; GamesRadar describes a more linear flow. The sources do not establish a quantitative comparison of puzzle or exploration time. (PlayStation Blog; GamesRadar) |
| Distinctive identity | Capcom’s interview grounds the comparison in first-person, personal-scale horror. (Capcom News) | The Genesis Configuration and the Labyrinth give Revival a Hellraiser-specific supernatural framework; a launch review also notes its Barker-inspired story. (DBLTAP; Creative Bloq) |
So, is Hellraiser: Revival like Resident Evil 7?
Yes, in the limited but important sense that its developers identified RE7 as an influence and its previewed systems include recognizable survival-horror conventions. No, if “like” means that it is established to share RE7’s precise horror priorities, structure, or overall experience. The available launch coverage instead suggests a more linear game in which combat has a substantial role, alongside puzzles, a distinct story, and the Labyrinth.

Calling that the “wrong lesson” is strongest when it means that Revival may have taken cues from Resident Evil’s mechanics without making the same commitment to intimate dread. It is weaker as a blanket claim that the game is a failure, a clone, or incapable of horror; the available evidence does not establish any of those conclusions.
