The work is at the prototype-testing stage: several cells have been built and are being tested in institute laboratories, but no cycle-life, energy-density, power, cost or production-scale results have been published for this specific technology.
What Fraunhofer announced
Fraunhofer IPA and the Institute for Photovoltaics at the University of Stuttgart developed and patented a lithium-ion cell and electrode technology using alloyed aluminium foil as the anode material. The announcement, dated 6 October 2026, says the approach prevents ageing processes that had limited aluminium anodes and preserves electrical contact within the electrode through repeated cycling. Why aluminium anodes have been difficult to use
During charging and discharging, aluminium changes volume. Fraunhofer says the resulting mechanical stress can create cracks and pores, and eventually pulverise electrode material. That damage can reduce capacity and limit cell life. The institute says its technology addresses this degradation and maintains electrical contact as the anode cycles; published data to quantify that claim are not included in the announcement.

What is different about the electrode
The design starts with commercially available alloyed aluminium foil. The foil serves both as active anode material and as the current collector. According to Fraunhofer, that means the electrode can avoid a separate copper carrier foil and the conventional coating step used to make active material into an electrode.
Fraunhofer presents this simpler construction as a potential way to reduce process costs and the energy needed to manufacture electrodes. It has not published a numerical estimate of either saving, so the proposed manufacturing benefit should not be mistaken for a demonstrated cost advantage.

Possible chemistry and applications
Fraunhofer describes a fluorine-free LMO cathode as one possible pairing for the aluminium anode. It also says alternative electrolyte solvents with high flash points could support operation at elevated temperatures. Combining a fluorine-free electrolyte with an LMO cathode could, the institute says, make a fluorine-free and PFAS-free cell concept possible. These are proposed design choices, not confirmed specifications or demonstrated commercial performance.
The institute names air-freight container tracking and specialised medical devices as potential applications where compact, reliable and safe energy storage may be useful. The announcement does not report deployments or field trials in either area.

How far along is the technology?
Fraunhofer says its team has built several prototypes and is testing them at the Fraunhofer IPA Center for Digitalized Battery Cell Production. It says the chemistry is designed to work with existing production equipment. Together, those details place the work at a laboratory prototype stage—not at commercial production or retail availability.
The announcement provides no cycle-life figures, energy or power density, cell dimensions, test conditions, cost data or manufacturing-scale validation for the IPA technology. Professor Kai Peter Birke, scientific director for battery and hydrogen systems and storage at Fraunhofer IPA, described the goal as making “a long-known but previously difficult-to-control battery technology practically usable.” That is the institute’s characterization of the development, not a substitute for published test results.

Do not confuse it with an aluminium-ion battery
The IPA project is a lithium-ion cell concept with an aluminium-foil anode. It is distinct from Fraunhofer IISB’s separate aluminium-ion research programme, which uses aluminium and graphite. For context only, IISB reports 160 Wh/kg energy density and greater than 9 kW/kg power density with natural graphite cathodes, more than 10,000 cycles at 100% depth of discharge in laboratory test cells, and energy efficiency above 85%. It also describes pouch cells up to 200 mAh: four-layer 200 mAh cells reportedly exceeded 1,000 cycles at 6 C, while single-layer 30 mAh cells exceeded 7,000 cycles at 30 C. These are figures published for the IISB aluminium-ion programme, not measurements of the technology announced by IPA.
Can you buy a battery using this technology?
No product availability is reported. The announcement describes laboratory prototypes and does not name a retail model, provide compatibility details or say that the cells are for sale. Kathrin Schad of Fraunhofer IPA’s battery technologies research team called the material-stability work a breakthrough that could make aluminium-anode batteries a realistic option for demanding energy-storage systems; that statement is a forward-looking assessment, not evidence of a commercial product.
