Michael Blaker’s Video Game Tuesday columns raise two relevant points—future-console planning and component-market pressure—but neither supplies a manufacturer release schedule or confirms that a console launch has moved.
What is actually confirmed about next-generation console timing?
No official release date or delay for a specific next-generation PlayStation or Xbox is established by the sources available for this topic. A January 1, 2026 commentary by Jonathan H. Kantor discussed uncertain timing and the possibility of delays, but it was opinion, not a schedule issued by either console maker.

That distinction matters: a prediction that a launch might slip is not evidence that it has slipped. Without an announcement from a manufacturer, a delay claim should be treated as speculation rather than a change to a confirmed date.
What Michael Blaker’s columns do—and do not—say
Future-generation plans and hardware hopes
In his October 15, 2024 Video Game Tuesday column, “Hopes for the Next Generation,” Blaker observed that major console makers were beginning to tease plans for future generations. That was a dated observation, not a confirmed launch window. He also expressed a preference for future consoles to use solid-state drives more widely and offer greater storage capacity. Those were his hopes, not announced specifications.

Component pressure as a possible risk
In his August 18, 2026 column, “Chip Shortages,” Blaker wrote, “Console players are not completely insulated either.” In context, he was discussing how broader memory and storage supply pressures could affect gaming hardware. This points to a possible risk for future consoles; it does not establish that a particular system has been delayed, or that component shortages are the cause of a delay.
The exact column titled “Michael Blaker’s Video Game Tuesday: Next Gen Delays” could not be verified in the available records. The two related columns support discussion of future-console plans and possible component pressures, but they do not establish a specific argument by Blaker about a confirmed launch delay.
How to tell a console delay from a game delay
A console-generation delay concerns the launch timing of hardware. A game delay concerns the release date of one title. The two can appear in the same gaming-news cycle, but one does not prove the other. Gabe Gurwin’s August 5, 2026 GameSpot roundup, “Every Game Delayed Right Now (2026 Edition),” covers individual game releases; it is not evidence that a PlayStation or Xbox generation launch has been postponed.

- Manufacturer confirmation: Look for an announcement or updated schedule from the console maker before treating a hardware date as official or changed.
- Commentary: An article arguing that a delay could happen, or might be beneficial, is analysis—not confirmation.
- Component-market reporting: Supply or cost pressure can be a plausible risk to hardware plans, but it does not by itself show that production or a launch has moved.
- Game-release roundups: These track software dates and should not be used to infer console-generation timing.
What readers can reasonably conclude
The defensible takeaway is uncertainty, not a confirmed postponement. Blaker’s 2024 column recorded early signs of future-generation planning and his personal hardware preferences. His 2026 column raised component-market pressure as a possible concern for console players. Kantor’s January 2026 piece considered possible timing changes, while Gurwin’s August 2026 roundup concerned delayed games. None of those items, as described, verifies a manufacturer-confirmed delay for a next-generation PlayStation or Xbox.
