ChatGPT is usually more useful after you have gathered the evidence: it can structure a PICO question, suggest search strategies, explain technical text, compare study designs and draft prose. Neither tool makes an answer self-validating. Treat ClinicalKey AI citations as leads to check, and treat every ChatGPT-generated reference as unverified until you open the original source.
The short answer: choose by research stage, not by a single winner
Clinical research is not one task. Finding an authoritative guideline, checking a trial’s inclusion criteria, extracting an effect estimate, explaining statistics to a non-specialist and turning verified notes into a manuscript require different capabilities.

ClinicalKey AI is designed for source-grounded clinical retrieval. Elsevier describes a corpus containing full-text journals, journal abstracts, society guidelines, medical reference books, Clinical Overviews, Drug Monographs and government publications from the FDA, CDC and National Library of Medicine. Its responses include citations and snippets linked to supporting evidence, with real-time citation validation described by Elsevier.
ChatGPT is a general-purpose generative assistant. It can decompose a question, help build a search strategy, summarize text that you provide, compare study designs and turn your notes into readable prose. Its output quality depends on the model, plan, tools and sources available in your particular workflow. Published medical-research literature also documents inaccurate or nonexistent references, and one study of research-quality assessment reported poor performance in Clinical Medicine.

For a defensible workflow, retrieve evidence with ClinicalKey AI or a conventional database, then use ChatGPT for organization and drafting. A human should inspect the original article or guideline before any material claim is used in a protocol, paper, presentation or patient-facing document.
How their source models differ
ClinicalKey AI: a defined clinical evidence environment
ClinicalKey AI is not presented as a general internet chatbot. Its value proposition is the medical collection behind the answer. The documented content types cover several layers of clinical research:
- Primary and secondary literature: full-text journals and journal abstracts.
- Professional guidance: society guidelines and Clinical Overviews.
- Reference material: medical reference books and Drug Monographs.
- Public-sector evidence: publications from the FDA, CDC and NLM.
That named coverage can make it easier to start with sources that are recognizable to a clinical researcher. It does not mean every relevant paper is included, that the newest version of every guideline is present, or that a generated synthesis is correct. Coverage, licensing and product behavior can change, so check the current product documentation and your institution’s subscription before relying on a feature.
ChatGPT: a flexible language layer whose evidence depends on the workflow
ChatGPT’s strength is transformation rather than a guaranteed medical index. You can supply an abstract, methods section, table or set of extracted findings and ask for a structured summary, a plain-language explanation or a comparison matrix. You can also ask it to turn a PICO question into database-ready search concepts, identify possible confounders or draft headings for a review.
Unless you provide and verify the sources, however, a fluent answer is not evidence of a literature search. A model may omit an important study, misread a result, combine findings from different populations or produce a citation that is inaccurate or does not exist. The exact model and plan matter, and ChatGPT capabilities change over time; record them when you use the system for research.

Comparison for clinical-research work
| Research need | ClinicalKey AI | ChatGPT | What the researcher still must do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source coverage | Elsevier documents a proprietary, copyright-cleared clinical corpus spanning journals, abstracts, guidelines, reference books, Clinical Overviews, Drug Monographs and FDA, CDC and NLM publications. | Coverage depends on the model, enabled tools and material supplied in the session; it is not described here as a fixed clinical database. | Check whether the needed specialty, geography, date range and publication type are actually represented. |
| Full text versus abstracts | Includes full-text journals as well as abstracts, subject to the product’s access and licensing. | Can analyze full text pasted or uploaded by the user; access to an external paper is not guaranteed by the chat interface. | Read the complete article, supplementary material and current guideline when the claim affects a decision. |
| Citation traceability | Elsevier says summaries include citations and snippets linked to supporting published evidence. | References can be proposed or formatted, but published reviews report inaccurate or nonexistent citations can occur. | Open every cited item and match the claim to the exact passage, table or figure. |
| Search reproducibility | Can help locate evidence, but the displayed result set, ranking and product version should be recorded. | A response is sensitive to prompt, model, context and date. | Save the question, prompt, model/version, date, databases, filters, inclusion criteria and source passages. |
| Drafting and synthesis | Useful for evidence-oriented summaries within its clinical environment. | Strong at outlining, rewriting, translating technical language and synthesizing researcher-supplied notes. | Keep interpretation tied to extracted data and have a qualified reviewer check conclusions. |
| Privacy and governance | Use under your institution’s licensing, data-processing and access policies. | Use only an approved workspace and follow institutional rules for confidential, identifiable or unpublished data. | Remove patient identifiers and proprietary material unless the governing policy explicitly permits the workflow. |
| Independent head-to-head evidence | No current independent benchmark establishes that one is universally more accurate than the other for the exact product versions and plans a researcher may use. | Judge the tools on the specific task and verify the underlying evidence. | |
Can you trust ClinicalKey AI citations?
Citations improve auditability, but a citation link is not proof that the generated sentence is supported. Elsevier states that each summary generated by ClinicalKey AI includes citations linking directly to supporting published evidence. Elsevier Support also tells users that reports include citations, but that important claims should be checked against the cited sources and professional judgment applied.
Use the citation as a fast route to the source, then test the match:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the cited record. Confirm that the title, journal, authors and publication type are what the answer implies.
- Locate the supporting passage. Find the sentence, table, figure or guideline recommendation behind the claim rather than relying on the snippet alone.
- Check population and intervention. Verify age range, disease definition, setting, comparator, dose or procedure and sample size.
- Check the outcome and estimate. Reconcile the stated direction, effect size, confidence interval, p-value, follow-up period and analysis population with the original report.
- Check time and applicability. Look for retractions, corrections, newer guidance and differences between the study population and your question.
- Record the result. Save the citation and the exact passage you accepted, plus any qualification you added.
ClinicalKey AI’s documented real-time citation validation is a useful safeguard, but no independently published figure establishes an overall citation-accuracy percentage for ClinicalKey AI across clinical-research tasks. Do not convert the presence of a validated-looking link into a claim that the answer is clinically correct.
How to verify ChatGPT-generated medical answers and references
ChatGPT can produce a plausible reference even when the bibliographic details are wrong. A review of medical-research literature reports inaccurate or nonexistent references, so verification must happen at the source level.
Bibliographic verification checklist
- Search the paper by title in the journal site, PubMed, Crossref or your library catalogue.
- Match all authors, journal, year, volume, issue, pages or article number and DOI.
- Confirm that the paper actually studied the stated population, intervention, comparator and outcome.
- Read the abstract and relevant full-text sections; do not infer the result from the title.
- Check whether the cited item is a protocol, preprint, correction, editorial, conference abstract or completed study.
- Check retraction and correction notices before quoting a result.
Claim-level verification
Ask ChatGPT to separate observations from interpretation, but do not let that separation replace checking. For every material sentence, identify the supporting source and classify the statement as a measured result, an author conclusion, a guideline recommendation or your own synthesis. Effect sizes, subgroup findings, safety outcomes and dates deserve particular scrutiny because a small wording change can reverse their meaning.

What to do when a reference cannot be found
Do not cite it “as supplied by ChatGPT.” Remove it, return to a conventional database or ClinicalKey AI, and find a verifiable source. If a source is real but the model misstated it, correct the metadata and recheck the associated claim from the original text.

A defensible workflow using both tools
1. Frame the question before opening a chatbot
Use PICO for an intervention question: population, intervention, comparator and outcome. Add a time frame, setting, study design, language and geography when they affect eligibility. For diagnostic, prognostic or qualitative work, use the structure appropriate to that design rather than forcing an intervention template.
2. Retrieve the evidence
Use ClinicalKey AI or a conventional database to locate guidelines, systematic reviews, trials and relevant government sources. Search with synonyms, controlled vocabulary where available and explicit date limits. Save the exact citation and the passage that appears to answer each part of the question.
3. Use ChatGPT on collected material
Provide the verified abstracts, excerpts or extraction table and state the allowed boundaries: “Use only the supplied studies; do not add references; mark missing information as not reported.” Ask for an outline, a comparison of study designs, a plain-language explanation or a draft that preserves numerical values and uncertainty.
4. Reconcile the draft with the originals
Compare every material statement with the article or guideline. Recalculate or independently check important numbers, especially relative and absolute effects, denominators, confidence intervals, subgroup analyses and adverse-event rates. A statistician, clinician, librarian or subject-matter reviewer should be involved when the question requires that expertise.

5. Preserve an audit trail
Keep the final search strings, databases and interfaces used, dates searched, filters, inclusion and exclusion criteria, retrieved citations, source passages, prompts, model/version, generated drafts and human changes. This record allows another researcher to understand what the system contributed and what was independently checked.
6. Disclose the role of AI
State which tool was used, the model or product version and date, the tasks delegated to it and how a human verified the output. Follow the target journal, funder, employer and institutional review requirements; disclosure rules differ by venue.
When ClinicalKey AI is the better choice
- You need a clinical starting point spanning guidelines, drug information, reference works and journal evidence.
- You want citations and snippets attached to a generated summary so that source checking starts inside the same interface.
- Your question is tightly clinical and you have access through an institutional subscription.
- You are screening several evidence types and want to reduce the time spent locating a relevant source before reading it in full.
It is still necessary to check currency, completeness and applicability. A named corpus is a provenance advantage, not a guarantee that the result set contains every eligible study or that the synthesis is error-free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When ChatGPT is the better choice
- You already have the papers, extraction table or guideline passages and need a structured summary.
- You need help translating technical language, comparing study designs, generating PICO concepts or drafting a search strategy for a database.
- You are turning verified notes into an outline, table, protocol section or explanation for a non-specialist audience.
- You want to iterate on wording, ask for alternative interpretations or identify questions that your evidence set does not answer.
Keep the evidence boundary explicit. A useful instruction is to prohibit invented references, require “not reported” for missing values and ask the model to quote the supplied passage before making an inference.
Human factors, privacy and institutional controls
Clinical research often contains unpublished analyses, commercially sensitive protocols or identifiable health information. Before pasting anything into either system, check your institution’s approved-tool list, data-processing terms, retention settings, access controls and contractual restrictions. De-identification is not a substitute for authorization when a dataset is small or a combination of details could re-identify participants.

Assign responsibility for each stage. A librarian can improve database retrieval and controlled-vocabulary choices; a clinician can assess applicability and safety; a statistician can check analyses; and the named authors remain accountable for the final claims. Neither product replaces those roles or a full-text review.
What the published performance evidence does—and does not—show
A 2025 Journal of Medical Internet Research evaluation reported that 61 of 100 responses showed some self-awareness about processing patterns and limitations; in the comparison reported there, ChatGPT-4.0 scored 18 of 25 on that measure. This is a result for a particular evaluation and construct, not a clinical-accuracy score, citation-accuracy rate or proof that ChatGPT is safe for unsupervised research.
Another study of research-quality assessment reported poor performance in Clinical Medicine, while a review described inaccurate or nonexistent references in medical research contexts. Those findings support verification and governance; they do not establish a universal error rate for every model, prompt or plan.

A practical decision rule
- Need to find clinical evidence? Start with ClinicalKey AI or a conventional bibliographic database, then open the primary sources.
- Need to understand or organize evidence you already possess? Use ChatGPT with the source text and strict no-invention instructions.
- Need a claim for publication or a clinical decision? Verify it against the original article or current guideline, regardless of which tool produced the draft.
- Need reproducibility? Keep the search and prompt log, model/version, dates, inclusion criteria and accepted passages.
- Need to handle sensitive data? Apply institutional governance before using either system.
The most reliable setup is therefore complementary: a source-oriented retrieval tool for finding and tracing evidence, a general language model for transformation and drafting, and qualified human reviewers for interpretation and accountability.
