CLI Says You’re Not Logged In on a Headless Linux Server? Fix the Auth Context

A CLI login belongs to a specific credential context. Find why the server process cannot see it, then choose browser handoff, device authorization, or workload identity.

A headless Linux server can’t always finish a CLI’s default browser sign-in, and a login that seemed to work may belong to a different Unix account, home directory, profile, or process environment. First identify the CLI and exact command that failed. Then choose a supported remote or device authorization flow for a human session, or a workload identity method for automation.

Why does my CLI say I’m not logged in over SSH?

“Logged in” is not a universal state shared across websites and command-line tools. Credentials are specific to a CLI and provider, and may also depend on the host, selected profile, Unix account, HOME, and environment variables. Signing in on a website or on your workstation does not necessarily authenticate the CLI process on a server.

Headless does not mean authentication is impossible. Some tools support device authorization or a browser handoff to another trusted device; others accept environment tokens or workload credentials. The right method depends on whether a person is using the CLI interactively or a service is running it unattended.

Start by identifying the failing context

Record the CLI name and version, exact command and full error, Linux account running it, and whether the command runs in an SSH shell, service, container, or CI job. Compare the failing process with the shell where login appeared to succeed.

  • Check the selected profile and relevant credential environment variables.
  • Confirm the process’s HOME and access to the expected credential files.
  • Verify the selected account and host, and whether credentials may have expired.
  • Check required scopes and permissions. A permission failure can resemble an authentication failure, but needs a different fix.

Why it works in your shell but fails under systemd

A service can run as a different Unix user, with a different home directory and environment from your interactive SSH shell. It may therefore read a different credential store or none at all. Check the service’s configured user, HOME, profile selection, and environment in the process that actually runs the command; a successful login in your shell does not prove the service can see those credentials.

How do I authenticate without opening a browser on Linux?

Choose an authorization flow the CLI officially supports. For a human session, follow its remote-browser or device-code instructions and complete authorization only on a trusted device. For automation, use the provider’s workload mechanism rather than repeatedly retrying an interactive browser flow that cannot finish on the server.

GitHub CLI: authenticate with a token

The default gh auth login flow is browser-based. GitHub CLI can also use a token supplied in an environment variable, which its manual describes as suitable for headless use such as automation. For a fine-grained personal access token, the manual recommends GH_TOKEN. Keep the token secret and ensure it has only the access the command needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manual also supports gh auth login --with-token with a classic personal access token, listing repo, read:org, and gist as minimum scopes for that path. GitHub warns that fine-grained token resource scoping can behave confusingly with --with-token, and favors GH_TOKEN for those tokens. See the GitHub CLI authentication manual.

  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately, not installed, installation required.

After login, check gh auth status to see the credential status and storage location. GitHub CLI uses a secure system credential store when available, but may fall back to a plain-text file if the store is unavailable or has an issue. Protect that file and the account that can read it.

AWS CLI: distinguish IAM Identity Center from console login

For IAM Identity Center, configure the SSO session and profile, then run aws sso login --profile PROFILE, replacing PROFILE with the configured profile name. AWS CLI 2.22.0 and later defaults to PKCE authorization; AWS says the PKCE URL must be opened in a browser on the same device. On a headless server, use device authorization instead:

aws sso login --profile PROFILE --use-device-code

Complete the device flow on another device. IAM Identity Center tokens are cached under ~/.aws/sso/cache; when credentials expire, another login is required. AWS documents these steps in its IAM Identity Center configuration guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is separate from the newer aws login --remote flow for console credentials used in local development. That command prints a URL to open on another device and asks you to paste the resulting authorization code back into the CLI. It is not a replacement name for IAM Identity Center SSO; follow the appropriate AWS login command instructions.

If AWS appears to ignore the expected profile, inspect credential selection before changing authentication. AWS documents that command-line options and environment variables take precedence over IAM Identity Center and credential files. Other supported sources include roles, external processes, containers, and EC2 instance profiles. See AWS CLI authentication and credential guidance.

Google Cloud CLI: use a browser on another device

For a human user account on a server without a browser, Google documents two remote options:

  • Second device has a browser and gcloud CLI: On the server, run gcloud auth login --no-browser. The second device must have gcloud CLI version 372.0.0 or later. Run the remote-bootstrap command emitted by the server flow on that device, then paste the returned localhost URL into the original server terminal.
  • Second device has only a browser: On the server, run gcloud auth login --no-launch-browser. Open the URL it prints on the other device and return the verification code to the server.

These steps are for human user authentication. Google says gcloud auth login stores credentials in the home directory, where anyone with filesystem access can use them. Its guidance says: “To reduce the consequences of a system being compromised, strictly separate human and workload use, and don’t use gcloud auth login for automated workloads on remote systems with persistent storage.” For workloads, consider service accounts or workload identity federation; Google also recommends using a secret manager with environment variables where possible. See Google Cloud’s gcloud CLI authentication guidance.

Should I use a personal login or a service identity on a server?

Use a human login when a person is interactively operating the CLI and the provider’s supported remote authorization flow fits the job. Use a workload identity or other supported noninteractive credential method when a service, scheduled task, or CI job runs unattended. Avoid treating a persistent server as a personal workstation by default: human credentials stored there can be used by anyone with access to their files.

Before adopting any method, verify how credentials are stored and renewed, which identity the process selects, and whether that identity has the necessary permissions. Do not place a secret in command history, logs, or an environment visible to untrusted users; follow the provider’s handling guidance for the specific credential type.

What to check when the login flow succeeds but the command still fails

  1. Confirm the same execution context. Check the account, HOME, profile, and environment for the failing command—not only for your SSH shell.
  2. Confirm the credential source. A token variable or higher-precedence profile setting may override the credential you just configured. AWS explicitly documents precedence for command-line options and environment variables.
  3. Check expiry and renewal. For AWS IAM Identity Center, expired credentials require another SSO login.
  4. Separate authentication from authorization. If identity is recognized but the command is denied, investigate scopes, permissions, and resource access rather than repeating sign-in.
  5. Match the method to the workload. Use the provider’s human remote flow for an interactive operator, and its workload mechanism for unattended execution.
