For free web protection on Windows 10, use Microsoft Defender SmartScreen in Edge, keep browser and Windows security features enabled, and treat its warnings as a reason to pause—not as a guarantee that every threat will be caught. The key limitation is that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. SmartScreen and antivirus do not replace operating-system security fixes; eligible devices can check Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) options, currently listed through October 12, 2027.
What free web protection does Windows 10 include?
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is the built-in starting point. It uses reputation information to warn about potentially risky websites and downloads. Microsoft describes it as an early-warning layer: it checks visited pages for suspicious behavior and compares them with records of reported phishing and malicious-software sites. It also checks downloaded files against reputation data. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview

SmartScreen is not a complete security barrier. It can help identify known risks, but it cannot promise to detect every harmful page or file, and its reputation checks are only one part of protecting a computer.

Websites and downloads in Edge
Edge SmartScreen provides browser warnings for unsafe sites and downloads. Microsoft says it is enabled by default. To check the setting, open edge://settings/privacy, then look under Services for Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. Microsoft Edge support for Microsoft Defender SmartScreen

Files downloaded through other apps
Windows 10 also integrates SmartScreen with file checks. Microsoft says it can check files that apps—including third-party browsers and email clients—attempt to download and run. That does not establish that every browser receives the same URL-level browsing protection Edge provides; the documented coverage distinguishes Edge’s site warnings from Windows’ checks on files.
How should you respond to a SmartScreen warning?
A warning about an unfamiliar download means Windows does not have an established reputation for that file; it does not by itself prove the file is malicious. Still, treat an unexpected warning seriously. Stop and verify that you obtained the file from the publisher’s genuine site and that you intended to download it. Do not bypass a warning simply because the file looks familiar. Microsoft notes that some warnings may be bypassed, but doing so without independent verification increases risk. What should you enable beyond SmartScreen?
- Windows Firewall and anti-malware protection: Keep Windows security protections enabled and check their status. Microsoft’s safety guidance identifies firewall and antivirus protections among the features to review. Microsoft Support: Protect my PC from viruses
- Browser pop-up blocking: Microsoft says Edge’s pop-up blocker is on by default; leave it enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- One active third-party anti-malware product at a time: Microsoft warns that multiple anti-malware programs can cause performance or stability issues. Installing another product may also turn Microsoft Defender off, so check which protection is active rather than assuming both are running.
- Current browser updates: Install available updates for your browser. Browser updates help keep the browser current, but they do not restore Windows operating-system security fixes.
Does antivirus make Windows 10 safe after support ended?
No antivirus or browser feature can substitute for operating-system security updates. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The computer continues to run, but ordinary software updates, security fixes, and technical support are no longer provided through standard support. Check whether your PC can receive consumer ESU
Microsoft says its consumer Extended Security Updates program can protect eligible Windows 10 devices until October 12, 2027. Eligibility and enrollment depend on Microsoft’s current requirements, so check the instructions for your device rather than assuming it is covered. ESU extends security-update protection for eligible devices; it does not make SmartScreen an operating-system patch or imply that every Windows 10 installation qualifies. Check upgrade eligibility
Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs that meet Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. Check the specific device against those requirements; not every Windows 10 computer qualifies. If it does not, consider a currently supported operating system or device rather than treating antivirus as a replacement for security fixes. Microsoft Support: Windows 10 support has ended
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which free protection layer addresses which risk?
| Protection layer | What it helps with | Windows 10 availability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Edge SmartScreen | Reputation warnings for potentially unsafe sites and downloads in Edge. | Included with Edge and on by default, according to Microsoft. It is not a guarantee against all threats. |
| Windows-integrated SmartScreen file checks | Checks files apps attempt to download and run, including apps such as third-party browsers and email clients. | Documented for Windows 10; this does not establish equivalent URL-level protection in every browser. |
| Firewall and anti-malware protections | Additional security features to keep enabled and check. | Microsoft recommends checking these protections. Running multiple anti-malware products can cause performance or stability issues. |
| Operating-system security fixes | Address vulnerabilities in Windows itself. | Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer ESU devices can receive protection through October 12, 2027, subject to Microsoft’s eligibility and enrollment rules. |
Microsoft’s documentation describes these built-in layers but does not establish a tested ranking of third-party free antivirus products. A “best shield” claim would require current, comparable testing; no single tool should be presented as solving the Windows 10 support gap.
