Clear CMOS on Motherboard to Reset BIOS Settings [Quickest Method]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clearing CMOS is the fastest way to return a motherboard’s firmware settings back to defaults when BIOS settings get corrupted, a bad overclock causes instability, or a boot issue points to configuration problems.

This guide focuses on the quickest safe method first (using the motherboard’s CMOS clear jumper with the PC fully powered off), then covers the other viable options when that jumper isn’t available or is inconvenient.

What Clearing CMOS Actually Does

CMOS is the small amount of non-volatile memory on your motherboard that stores BIOS/UEFI configuration: boot order, enabled/disabled devices, some voltage/clock-related settings, and hardware-related parameters.

Clearing CMOS typically returns the firmware to factory defaults. That often includes resetting custom boot settings and disabling risky overclock profiles—exactly what you want when the system won’t POST or behaves unpredictably.

When You Should Clear CMOS

  • No POST or no video output after changing BIOS settings (especially CPU/RAM timings, voltages, or boot mode).
  • Boot loop where the PC restarts repeatedly right after POST.
  • Overclock instability (crashes, BSOD, random reboots) after raising multipliers/voltages.
  • After BIOS password or wrong secure boot settings when you’re locked out and you have legitimate access.
  • Firmware update mishap where settings became inconsistent (clearing can help, though sometimes a BIOS reflash is still required).

Prerequisites and Safety Checks

Before touching jumpers or removing parts, take 2 minutes to avoid avoidable damage. CMOS clearing is usually safe when done correctly, but you still must power down properly.

  • Power down fully: shut the PC down from the OS (if it boots), then switch off the PSU.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall or power strip.
  • Discharge residual power by pressing the case power button for ~5–10 seconds (nothing should power on).
  • Use ESD precautions: touch the metal chassis before handling the motherboard; avoid working on carpet.
  • Identify the correct pins/jumper: consult the motherboard manual for the exact CMOS clear label (common names: CLRTC, CLEAR CMOS, CLRTC/RST, BIOS_CLR).

The Quickest Method: Use the CMOS Clear Jumper (Power Fully Off)

If your motherboard has a CMOS clear jumper, this is typically the quickest reliable method. It’s also the most “standard” approach across manufacturers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step (Jumper Method)

  1. Shut down the PC.
  2. Switch off the PSU (flip the I/O switch on the power supply to O).
  3. Unplug the AC power cable.
  4. Press the power button on the case for 5–10 seconds to discharge standby power.
  5. Find the CMOS clear jumper on the motherboard. Look for a 2-pin header with a plastic cap, usually labeled CLR_CMOS, CLRTC, or similar.
  6. Note the current position of the jumper cap (often on pins 1–2).
  7. Move the jumper to the “clear” position (often pins 2–3), as indicated in your manual.
  8. Wait: keep it in the clear position for 10–20 seconds (some boards recommend up to 1 minute).
  9. Return the jumper to its original position (the “normal” pins).
  10. Plug in and power on (PSU switch to I, power cord back in).
  11. Boot into BIOS/UEFI and load defaults if prompted.

How long should you wait?

For most boards, 10–20 seconds is enough because CMOS power is removed when the PSU is off and residual power is discharged. If you still have boot problems, try a longer wait like 1–3 minutes, then repeat the process.

Alternative Methods (If You Don’t Have a Jumper or It’s Hard to Reach)

Some boards place the CMOS clear jumper in awkward spots, remove it entirely in favor of a button, or only provide a battery-based approach. Here are the other methods that work in real-world troubleshooting.

Method: CMOS Clear Button on the Motherboard

Some ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and ASRock boards include a dedicated BIOS/CMOS reset button (sometimes labeled “Clear CMOS” or “BIOS Flashback” with separate controls).

  1. Power off the PC and switch off the PSU.
  2. Unplug the power cord.
  3. Press the CMOS clear button once (or hold it per the board label—commonly 5–10 seconds).
  4. Return power, boot, and enter BIOS/UEFI to confirm defaults are applied.

Method: Remove the CMOS Battery

If there’s no jumper, the CMOS battery removal method is often the next fastest reliable approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power off the PC, switch off PSU, unplug power cord, and discharge by pressing the case power button 5–10 seconds.
  2. Locate the coin-cell CMOS battery (typically a CR2032).
  3. Carefully unclip/remove the battery.
  4. Wait at least 5 minutes (15 minutes is more forgiving if your system had a stubborn misconfiguration).
  5. Reinstall the battery with correct polarity.
  6. Plug in power, boot, and load BIOS defaults.

Method: Remove Power and Use the PSU Switch

Sometimes clearing is effectively done by removing standby power long enough—especially after minor setting changes. This doesn’t always work if the motherboard uses a powered standby path, but it’s a safe first pass.

  1. Shut down PC.
  2. Switch PSU to O and unplug power cable.
  3. Press case power button 10 seconds.
  4. Wait 3–10 minutes.
  5. Power on and check whether BIOS defaults loaded correctly.

Method: Shorting the CMOS Pins (Only if You Know the Correct Pins)

On many boards, the clear function is just a pair (or triplet) of pins near the chipset/RTC controller. Shorting the correct pins can work, but it’s also easier to short the wrong header if you’re guessing.

  1. Use the motherboard manual to identify the exact RTC/CMOS clear pins.
  2. Power off the PC, switch off PSU, unplug power cord, then discharge.
  3. Use a screwdriver tip or jumper wire to short the designated clear pins.
  4. Hold for 10–20 seconds.
  5. Stop, remove the short, restore normal condition, then boot.

Do not attempt this based on visual similarity alone. If you can’t confirm the correct pins, use the battery removal method instead.

Reboot and Verify BIOS Reset Worked

After clearing CMOS, the most important step is verification—not just a successful boot. Settings may reset, but you still want to confirm that your system is using defaults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check in BIOS/UEFI

  • Load Optimized Defaults or Load Defaults option.
  • Boot mode (Legacy/CSM vs UEFI). If your drive was set up for UEFI, ensure UEFI remains selected.
  • Boot order: confirm the correct drive is first.
  • RAM settings: confirm whether XMP/EXPO is disabled and re-enable carefully if needed.
  • Storage controller mode (SATA mode/RAID/AHCI) matches your operating system requirements.
  • System time/date: many resets will reset RTC time.

Troubleshooting: What to Try When Clearing CMOS Doesn’t Fix It

If the same boot problem persists after a proper CMOS clear, don’t assume the issue is configuration-only. Work through likely causes in order.

1) Repeat the clear with a longer power-off window

Do a full power-off, discharge, then clear for 1–3 minutes. If using the battery method, wait 15 minutes.

2) Confirm the jumper is on the correct pins

Some boards have multiple jumpers nearby. Double-check the silkscreen label and manual diagram.

3) Remove the CMOS battery and reseat it

Reseat it firmly and make sure polarity is correct (the “+” side should match the holder).

4) Try a minimal boot configuration

  • Remove extra RAM sticks; try one module.
  • Disconnect non-essential drives.
  • Remove add-in cards except the GPU (or use onboard video if available and supported).

5) Update or reflash BIOS/UEFI

If you suspect a failed firmware update or corrupted BIOS image, CMOS clearing won’t always restore functionality. If your board supports it, use USB BIOS Flashback (varies by brand) to reflash.

6) Check for hardware signals

Look for motherboard debug LEDs (EZ Debug on some models) and beep codes. That can quickly point to CPU, RAM, or boot device issues.

Common Mistakes That Can Make Things Worse

  • Clearing while the PC is still plugged in: you want the PSU fully off and power cord removed.
  • Holding the jumper too briefly: short taps can fail on boards that use a longer standby retention window.
  • Leaving the jumper in “clear”: the system may not boot until returned to normal position.
  • Confusing clear CMOS with BIOS Flashback: flashing restores firmware; clearing resets settings.
  • Shorting the wrong header: only short pins you can identify with the manual.
  • Turning on again before reassembly: if you remove the battery, reseat it properly before powering.

After Reset: Reconfigure BIOS/UEFI the Right Way

Once you’re booting again, reapply your settings carefully. Don’t put everything back at once—especially if the system previously failed to POST.

Recommended reconfiguration order

  1. Load defaults and confirm the system boots normally.
  2. Verify boot drive (UEFI and correct disk first).
  3. Enable XMP/EXPO only if needed, then test stability.
  4. Set storage mode (AHCI vs RAID) to match how the OS is installed.
  5. Reapply fan curves and any power-saving preferences last.
  6. Only then redo CPU/RAM overclocks in small increments, with a stable profile checkpoint.

How long does CMOS clearing take?

The process is usually a couple of minutes. The “fast” part is the jumper move; the total time includes powering down, discharging, waiting, and rebooting.

Can I clear CMOS without opening the case?

Only if your motherboard provides a rear-access CMOS clear button or a front-panel feature. Otherwise, you typically need to access the motherboard internals to use a jumper or battery.

What if my motherboard has no jumper and no battery access?

Some modern boards make parts less accessible. In that case, check the manual for a supported reset procedure, and consider using a documented reset pin or a vendor method rather than improvising.

Bottom Line

The quickest method to reset BIOS settings is almost always: power the PC fully off, switch off the PSU, discharge the system, then move the CMOS clear jumper for 10–20 seconds and restore it to normal.

If clearing CMOS doesn’t resolve the boot issue, treat it as a troubleshooting fork: verify the jumper/battery step was correct, then move on to minimal hardware configuration and (if needed) BIOS reflash via your board’s recovery features.
