The Stadia controller wasn’t designed only for Stadia. If you’ve got one sitting around after the service wind-down, you can still use it—most reliably through Bluetooth—on phones, tablets, PCs, and Linux devices.
This guide walks you through pairing it to “anything” in practice: the exact pairing-mode step, then platform-by-platform setup, plus fixes for the most common failure points like controllers not showing up, one-buttton-only behavior, or broken button mapping.

- Stadia controller (Bluetooth supported)
- Powered device you want to pair with (Windows/macOS/Android/iOS/iPadOS/Linux/Steam Deck)
- Bluetooth enabled on that device
- USB-C cable (optional) for power and for wired fallback
- Battery charge: aim for at least a few minutes of runtime so you can finish pairing
How Stadia Controller Bluetooth Pairing Works
When the Stadia controller enters Bluetooth pairing mode, it advertises itself so your device can add it under Bluetooth settings. After pairing, it behaves like a standard gamepad interface, but how the buttons map depends on the target platform and app.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
If your device can’t “see” the controller at all, the controller almost certainly isn’t in pairing mode, or it’s already paired to a different device and needs to be switched away.
Enter Bluetooth Pairing Mode on the Stadia Controller
To pair the controller to a non-Stadia device over Bluetooth, you’ll first need to put it into Bluetooth pairing mode.
Pairing mode steps
- Hold down the Stadia button until the controller wakes.
- Press and hold Stadia + X together for about 3–5 seconds.
- Watch the controller lights. When pairing mode is active, the LED will indicate pairing (rapid blinking behavior is typical).
- Go to your host device’s Bluetooth menu and select the controller when it appears.
If you don’t see any blinking/pairing behavior, release both buttons and try again after 10–15 seconds. Also remove other controllers (or put them to sleep) so you’re not fighting multiple pair targets.
Pair It on Each Platform
Use the pairing mode instructions above, then follow the steps for your device. The Stadia controller typically appears as a generic gamepad device name; on some devices it may show up with wording like Stadia Controller or a model-style name depending on OS labeling.
Windows 10/11
Windows will normally recognize the controller once it’s paired, and many games will use it as a standard gamepad.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth On.
- Select Add device → Bluetooth.
- Wait for the Stadia controller to appear in the list.
- Select it and finish pairing.
- Verify under Settings → Bluetooth & devices or Devices
- For testing: open Game Controllers (search Windows for “Game Controllers”). Confirm the device is listed.
If a game doesn’t recognize it, test in the Windows Game Controllers panel first. If it registers inputs there, the issue is mapping in the specific app/game—not pairing.
macOS
macOS generally supports gamepads over Bluetooth, but you may need to remap in a game or use a compatibility layer if the button layout feels wrong.

- Put the Stadia controller in Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Find the controller in the device list and click Connect.
- Confirm it’s connected (status should change to Connected).
- Test inputs in a controller tester app if you need quick verification.
For some macOS apps, the controller may show up as a generic gamepad. If your buttons don’t match your expectations, you’ll have to remap inside the app/game or via a controller mapping tool.
Android
Android support is usually strong, especially if you’re using a controller-aware game or emulator.
- Open Settings → Connected devices (or Bluetooth depending on brand).
- Tap Pair new device.
- Enter Bluetooth pairing mode on the Stadia controller (Stadia + X).
- Select the Stadia controller from the list.
- Wait for the connection to complete.
- Test in a gamepad test screen or a controller-supported game.
If you’re using an emulator, set the controller profile to a generic gamepad first. Then adjust mapping only if buttons are swapped.
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
iOS/iPadOS supports Bluetooth game controllers, but game compatibility varies widely. Pairing is the easy part; the right mapping profile is the hard part.

- Make sure Bluetooth is On.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode (Stadia + X).
- In the Devices list, tap the Stadia controller to pair.
- Open a supported game and check controller recognition.
If the controller connects but doesn’t control the game, look for an in-game controller mapping option. Some iOS games only support specific controller standards or profiles.
Steam Deck (SteamOS)
Steam Deck often works well with third-party gamepads, and Steam Input can correct mapping issues.
- On the Steam Deck, open Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Bluetooth.
- Enter Bluetooth pairing mode on the Stadia controller.
- Find the controller in the Bluetooth list and select Pair.
- Open Steam and launch a game.
- If inputs feel off, open the game’s Controller configuration and select a community layout or remap.
Steam Input can make a “works but wrong layout” situation behave like a proper controller in most cases.

Raspberry Pi (Linux)
Linux support depends on the Bluetooth stack and how games read input, but it’s usually manageable with standard gamepad drivers.
- On Raspberry Pi OS, open the Bluetooth manager or use terminal tools.
- Enter pairing mode on the Stadia controller (Stadia + X).
- Pair from your Bluetooth UI (or CLI) until it shows as Connected.
- Confirm the controller appears as an input device (common paths include
/dev/input/event*). - Test with a game or a controller tester.
If Bluetooth pairing connects but the controller doesn’t move in games, you may be looking at driver or udev/input mapping rather than pairing itself.
If Pairing Fails: Troubleshooting That Actually Fixes It
When a controller won’t pair, it’s usually one of: pairing mode not active, the controller still connected to another device, low battery, or a stale Bluetooth pairing entry.
Controller doesn’t appear in Bluetooth list
- Confirm pairing mode: Stadia + X and wait for the LED pairing indication.
- Bring distance down: keep the controller within 1 meter (3 feet) of the host while pairing.
- Restart Bluetooth: turn Bluetooth off/on on the host device.
- Power-cycle the controller: hold the controller power button/stadia button to wake, then re-enter pairing mode.
Controller pairs but inputs don’t work
- Test input at the OS level (Windows Game Controllers panel; macOS controller tester; Android controller test).
- Check that the correct profile is used in emulators or games.
- Disconnect/reconnect: remove the controller and re-pair fresh.
- Try wired USB-C to confirm the controller itself is functioning.
Stuck pairing / keeps reconnecting to the wrong device
- On the host device, remove the controller under Bluetooth device list (“Forget this device”).
- On the controller, re-enter pairing mode and pair again.
- Repeat for each device you previously paired with, if needed.
Battery and firmware edge cases
If the controller is low, it may fail to enter pairing mode consistently. Charge it via USB-C for 10–20 minutes, then try pairing again.
Also, if you’ve had it paired for months and things suddenly fail, remove the device entry on the host and re-pair. Stale Bluetooth bonds are a common culprit.

Once pairing works, you may still have “why does A/B feel swapped?” problems. That’s not a broken connection—it’s a mapping mismatch between the Stadia controller’s layout and the way a game expects a standard controller.
Use OS/controller mapping tools when needed
- Windows: Steam games often work better with Steam Input than with raw DirectInput/XInput expectations.
- Steam Deck: Steam Input is your friend—use it to pick a community layout.
- Emulators: choose a generic gamepad profile first, then remap.
Common adjustments that fix 80% of “feel” issues
- Dead zones: reduce or adjust to stop drift on thumbsticks
- Trigger behavior: some mappings treat triggers as axes vs buttons
- Button swap: remap X/Y or A/B if your game reads them differently
When Bluetooth Isn’t the Right Choice
Bluetooth is convenient, but not every device performs equally. If you’re chasing the lowest input latency or the most reliable gamepad detection, wired can beat Bluetooth.

Use Wired USB-C Instead
If your target device supports USB gamepads, connect the Stadia controller with USB-C. This often avoids pairing issues entirely and can improve recognition in older games.
- Connect controller via USB-C
- Open the game’s controller menu
- Confirm the device shows up as a gamepad
Use Steam Input / Mapping Tools
For PC and Steam Deck users, Steam Input can correct layout differences and make the Stadia controller feel native in supported titles.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pairing mode not active long enough: you typically need to pair within the window where the controller is advertising.
- Trying to pair while it’s connected elsewhere: remove/forget the controller from the other device if it keeps grabbing the connection.
- Assuming it’s a controller app problem: always test the controller in OS-level input settings first.
- Ignoring mapping: many games need a controller configuration profile even when the controller is detected.
- Low battery: weak power can cause flaky Bluetooth pairing behavior.
FAQs
Does the Stadia controller work on any Bluetooth device?
No controller can work on literally anything—pairing is only half the story. Even when paired successfully, a specific app/game might not recognize the layout or might need remapping.
What if my device pairs it but the thumbsticks drift?
Drift is usually a dead zone calibration issue or a worn stick. In games, lower dead zones or increase the dead zone threshold. If you’re using a controller mapping tool, calibrate there first.
Can I use the Stadia controller on iPhone/iPad with every game?
Not every game supports external gamepads the same way. Pairing may succeed, but gameplay support depends on whether the app includes controller mappings for gamepad inputs.
Will wired USB-C always work if Bluetooth fails?
Wired usually increases reliability, but it depends on the host device and software expecting a controller over USB. If wired also fails, the controller may be defective or the connection isn’t being recognized as a gamepad by that specific OS/app.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does my button layout feel wrong after pairing?
Bluetooth pairing works, but the host/app might treat the Stadia controller differently than you expect. Fix it in-game, via emulator mapping, or using Steam Input/community templates on Steam Deck and Steam.
Bottom Line
Pairing your Stadia controller to non-Stadia devices over Bluetooth is absolutely doable: put the controller in Bluetooth pairing mode (Stadia + X), then add it from your device’s Bluetooth settings. After that, most issues become mapping or calibration—not pairing.
If Bluetooth gets stubborn, wired USB-C and Steam Input-style remapping are the fastest fallback paths. Keep OS-level testing in your routine, and you’ll get from “not detected” to “gaming” with minimal frustration.
