NAT Type Failed on PS4 usually means your console can’t reliably establish inbound connections required for online services. The result is often broken parties, blocked voice chat, or games refusing to host sessions.
The good news: in most cases you can fix it without replacing hardware. This guide walks you through five working solutions—from UPnP to manual port forwarding and the “hidden culprit” (CGNAT).

Typical causes include UPnP being disabled, PS4 not having a stable IP, incorrect port forwarding, restrictive firewall rules, double-NAT, or ISP-level CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) where you can’t fully control your public networking.
Before You Change Anything: Quick Checks
Do these first—small issues can waste hours of router tweaking.
- Use a wired connection if possible: Ethernet is more consistent for NAT testing. If you must use Wi‑Fi, consider moving the PS4 closer to the router.
- Confirm the PS4 software is updated: Settings → System Software Update. Use the latest available version for your region.
- Restart both modem and router: power cycling is faster than hunting settings blindly.
- Run a NAT test once before changes: so you have a baseline and can tell whether a fix actually worked.
On PS4, check the NAT status here: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. Write down the NAT result (example: NAT Type Failed, or NAT Type 3).
Working Solution 1: Power-Cycle Everything (Console + Router + Modem)
This fixes a surprising number of NAT failures because routers often keep stale NAT tables and half-open firewall mappings after ISP reassignments or prior configuration changes.
- Turn off your PS4 (not Rest Mode): hold the power button until you get the full shutdown prompt and select it.
- Unplug your modem (and ONT if you have fiber) and your router from power.
- Wait 60 seconds (for most routers, that’s long enough for NAT/firewall state to clear).
- Plug in the modem first, wait for it to fully sync (usually 2–5 minutes; watch for stable “Online/Internet” light).
- Plug in the router, then wait for internet to come back.
- Power on the PS4 and run Test Internet Connection again.
If NAT Type Failed persists, move to UPnP. Don’t assume the issue is your PS4—test internet works can still hide NAT problems.
Working Solution 2: Enable UPnP on Your Router
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) lets your router automatically open the ports needed for PlayStation networking. When it’s enabled correctly, NAT testing often flips from Failed to Type 2 or Type 1.
Exact wording varies by router brand, but look for one of these settings: UPnP, UPnP IGD, or Automatic Port Mapping.

- Log into your router admin page (commonly
http://192.168.0.1orhttp://192.168.1.1). - Find UPnP (often under Advanced, NAT, or Firewall).
- Set UPnP = Enabled.
- Save/apply changes.
- Power-cycle the router (unplug 20–30 seconds and plug back in), then retest NAT on PS4.
If your router has a “UPnP for IPv6” toggle, enable it too when available. Many networks now use dual-stack, and the PS4 test can behave differently depending on how IPv6 is handled.
Working Solution 3: Set a Static IP for Your PS4, Then Enable UPnP or Forward Ports
Some routers “forget” mappings when the PS4’s local IP changes. Assigning a static IP (either via DHCP reservation or manual static IP on the PS4) makes NAT behavior consistent.
You have two ways to do this: (A) reserve an IP in the router, or (B) set manual IP on the PS4. Router reservation is usually safer.
Option A (Preferred): DHCP Reservation on the Router
- On your PS4, open Settings → Network → View Connection Status.
- Write down the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Router.
- In the router admin page, find LAN → DHCP Reservation (sometimes called Address Reservation or Static DHCP).
- Select the PS4 by MAC Address (PS4 uses a MAC starting with unique vendor bits; just pick the device labeled as your PS4).
- Reserve the same IP you noted from the PS4.
- Save/apply, then retest NAT on PS4.
Option B: Manual Static IP on the PS4
If DHCP reservation isn’t available, PS4 can use manual settings. The safest approach is to match whatever works today.

- Go to Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select your connection type: Use LAN Cable or Use Wi-Fi.
- Choose Custom.
- Set IP Address Setting to Manual.
- Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Router values exactly like the PS4 currently reports (from View Connection Status).
- Set Primary DNS and Secondary DNS (use values your network already worked with, or trusted public DNS like 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 if you’re unsure).
- Finish setup and run Test Internet Connection again.
After setting a static IP, try UPnP again (Solution 2) or proceed straight to port forwarding (Solution 4).
Working Solution 4: Port Forward for PlayStation (Manual NAT Fix)
If UPnP is off, unreliable, or blocked by the router firmware, manual port forwarding can still correct NAT Type Failed. This creates explicit firewall rules for inbound connections.
Here’s the method that works for most home routers.

Step 1: Assign the PS4 to a Stable IP
Use Solution 3 first (DHCP reservation). Port forwarding won’t behave consistently if the PS4 IP changes.

Look for one of these in your router admin: Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or Firewall Rules.
Step 3: Forward PlayStation-required ports to the PS4
Use the PS4’s static IP as the “internal” host. Use the external port the same as internal port unless your router asks otherwise.
| Purpose | Protocol | Ports |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation online services | TCP | 80, 443 |
| PSN communication | TCP | 3478 |
| Voice/real-time sessions | UDP | 3478 |
| PSN NAT traversal | TCP | 3479 |
| PSN NAT traversal | UDP | 3479 |
| Game traffic range | TCP/UDP | 49152-65535 |
Notes: Many community port lists focus on 80/443 and 3478/3479 plus the ephemeral range 49152–65535. This combo is the most common “manual NAT fix” set for PlayStation. If your router has a single rule field for a port range, set 49152–65535 for both TCP and UDP.
Step 4: Save and reboot the router
- Save/apply each port forward rule.
- Reboot the router (unplug for 20–30 seconds, plug back in).
- On PS4, run Test Internet Connection and confirm NAT type.
If you get NAT Type 2 after this, that’s typically acceptable for most online play. NAT Type 1 is better but not always achievable on every ISP setup.
Working Solution 5: Check for ISP CGNAT and Fix the Root Cause (DMZ/Bridge/Ask ISP)
If the same NAT test fails even after UPnP and port forwarding, you might not be able to fix it entirely from your side. The most common blocker is CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT), where your public IP is shared and inbound port mapping doesn’t work as expected.
You can confirm this with practical checks and then choose the right workaround.

Check 1: Compare WAN IP vs external IP
- Log into your router admin and note the WAN IP (sometimes shown as “Internet IP Address”).
- Use a phone or PC on the same network to check your public IP via a site like whatismyip.com.
- If your router’s WAN IP is in a private or “non-routable-looking” range (or doesn’t match what you see externally), you may be behind CGNAT or double NAT.
Also look for these signs: the router itself reports an IP that resembles NAT inside NAT, or port forwarding rules never show an “active” or “matched” status.
Check 2: Use router “UPnP status” and NAT mapping
Some routers show UPnP mapping entries or logs under UPnP or Security. If mappings are not created or never appear, it can indicate upstream blocking.
Workarounds when you can’t fully control NAT
Pick the option that matches your ISP setup.
- Ask your ISP for a public IP: Request removal of CGNAT or “public/static IP assignment.” This is the cleanest fix.
- Enable bridge mode: If your ISP provided a gateway modem/router combo, bridge mode can reduce double-NAT issues.
- Use DMZ (with caution): Some gateways offer a DMZ host setting. Put your router (or your PS4 network) in DMZ so inbound traffic reaches your equipment. If your setup is wrong, you can reduce security.
- Replace double-NAT chain: If you have your own router behind an ISP gateway, ensure it’s the only router doing NAT. The goal is one NAT layer, not two.
After changing ISP/gateway mode, rerun NAT test on PS4. CGNAT removal can be the difference between NAT Type Failed and NAT Type 2/1.

If you tried the five solutions and the NAT test still fails, don’t stop—narrow the problem.
1) Verify you entered the right IP in forwarding rules
Most port forwarding mistakes come from forwarding to the wrong internal IP. Confirm your PS4 IP again via Settings → Network → View Connection Status.
2) Check firewall features on the router
- Disable SPI Firewall temporarily for testing if your router allows it (then re-enable later if desired).
- Turn off “security suites” like ad blockers or strict threat filters that can interfere with inbound mapping.
3) Avoid conflicting rules
If your router has both UPnP and manual forwarding, conflicts are possible but less common. Still, check that there isn’t a “deny inbound” policy overriding your rules.

4) Test using the router’s basic settings
If you use VLANs, guest networks, or alternate WAN profiles, move PS4 to the main LAN/SSID. Guest Wi‑Fi networks often block peer-to-peer traffic and can break NAT behavior.

5) Confirm modem/ONT isn’t double NATing
When you have an ISP gateway plus your own router, ensure the upstream device is in bridge mode or that the second router isn’t nested behind another NAT layer.
6) Try a different router or hotspot to isolate
- Connect PS4 to a mobile hotspot.
- Run Test Internet Connection.
If hotspot gives NAT Type 2/1, your ISP router chain is the problem. If hotspot also fails, inspect PS4 configuration, DNS, or even the PS4 network port/cable.
Common Mistakes That Keep NAT Struck on Failed
- Static IP mismatch: You port-forwarded to an old IP, but the PS4 got a new address.
- No router reboot after changes: Some routers don’t apply UPnP/forwarding instantly.
- Forwarding only one protocol: For the big range, you often need both TCP and UDP for 49152–65535.
- Wrong PS4 IP type: Don’t forward to the gateway or the DNS server—always forward to the PS4’s internal IP.
- Forgetting to disable VPN on the router/PS4: VPNs can break NAT traversal and prevent mappings.
Comparison: NAT Type 2 vs NAT Type 1 (What You Should Target)
PS4 guidance typically frames outcomes like this:
- NAT Type 1: Best case. Usually means open inbound connectivity without restrictive NAT behavior.
- NAT Type 2: Generally playable for most games. Often works well for parties and voice.
- NAT Type 3 / Failed: More restrictive. Failed means your console can’t pass NAT requirements for online session setup reliably.
If you can’t reach NAT Type 1 due to ISP CGNAT, NAT Type 2 is still a practical win. The goal is a stable online experience, not a perfect label.
FAQs About PS4 NAT Type Failed
Why does my PS4 show NAT Type Failed even though my internet works?
Because browsing websites only proves outbound connectivity. NAT checks require correct inbound mapping and consistent router/firewall behavior for session negotiation.
Does DMZ solve PS4 NAT Type Failed?
It can, especially when your router is the only device that should receive inbound traffic. However, DMZ can reduce security and won’t fix CGNAT upstream limitations. Use it carefully and only for the device that should host your NAT settings.
Do I really need port forwarding if I enable UPnP?
Usually no. UPnP should handle it automatically. Port forwarding is the reliable fallback when UPnP is unavailable, blocked, or inconsistent.
What ports do I forward for PS4 NAT Type Failed?
A common set is TCP/UDP 3478/3479 plus TCP/UDP 49152–65535, and optionally TCP 80 and TCP 443. Exact requirements can vary by game and router, but that combination covers the most frequent PlayStation NAT traversal needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan CGNAT make NAT Type Failed impossible to fix?
Sometimes. If your ISP places you behind CGNAT, inbound port mappings may not work end-to-end. In that case, the practical solution is to ask the ISP for a public IP or enable bridge mode / remove double NAT.
Bottom Line
NAT Type Failed on PS4 is almost always fixable when the issue is local to your router setup: power cycling, enabling UPnP, giving your PS4 a stable IP, and using manual port forwarding when needed.
If all five solutions fail, focus on the upstream cause—especially CGNAT or double-NAT from your ISP gateway. Once you get consistent inbound mapping again, your NAT test will move from Failed to a usable NAT type for online play.
