There is no permanent overall winner among Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT. The best choice changes with the model version, tools enabled, context size, prompt quality, and the job you need done. For a demanding coding agent, one model may be stronger; for a multimodal research packet, another may be more practical; for tightly constrained writing, the deciding factor may be instruction following and your editing workflow rather than a benchmark score.
Choose by testing representative tasks in the exact plans, applications, APIs, repositories, and data-governance settings you will use. The comparison below explains where each service is positioned, what the published evidence does and does not prove, and how to run a fair evaluation before paying.

The short answer
Use Claude when your priority is a long-running coding or knowledge-work agent and you want Anthropic’s workload-oriented model guidance. Use Gemini when native multimodal input, very large context, and Google-distributed tools are central to the job. Use ChatGPT when you want OpenAI’s broad model-and-tool ecosystem and strong published coverage across coding, computer use, professional work, and academic reasoning. Those are starting points, not guarantees.

A model label is not enough to predict your result. “Claude,” “Gemini,” and “ChatGPT” each expose different models, system prompts, tools, context limits, account tiers, and safety settings. A result from an API model can differ from the consumer application, and a vendor benchmark can use a different harness from the one you will run locally.

What is actually being compared?
These are services rather than three single, fixed models. Your practical experience depends on at least six variables:
- Model and version: Names and capabilities change. Record the exact model identifier and date.
- Tool access: Browsing, code execution, terminals, file search, computer control, connectors, and custom tools can change an answer more than a small model upgrade.
- Context and output settings: A long context window helps only when the application accepts your files and the model can retrieve the relevant passages reliably.
- Plan or API configuration: Rate limits, available tools, retention controls, and model access vary by account.
- Prompt and evaluation design: A vague prompt rewards plausible prose; a reproducible task with tests and a scoring rubric reveals useful differences.
- Your data: A model that performs well on public examples may struggle with your private codebase, house style, domain terminology, or document formats.
Published scores are useful signals, not a universal ranking. Compare like-for-like conditions and report whether a result is vendor-reported or independently reproduced.
Coding: repository work matters more than a one-shot snippet
For programming, evaluate the complete loop: understanding an unfamiliar repository, planning a change, editing multiple files, running commands, interpreting failures, writing tests, and stopping safely when requirements are ambiguous. A model that produces elegant isolated functions can still be a poor coding agent if it loses state, ignores test failures, or makes uncontrolled edits.

Claude’s coding-oriented options
Anthropic’s current matrix says most workloads start with Claude Opus 5.5, described as built for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work. It assigns Opus 5.5 to multihour autonomous coding agents, large-scale refactoring, complex systems engineering, vision-heavy workflows, and computer use.
The same matrix positions Sonnet 5.5 for code generation, data analysis, content creation, visual understanding, and agentic tool use. Fable 5.1 is assigned to agent sessions that run for hours, multistep deep research, and analysis carried through to a finished document, spreadsheet, or deck. Haiku 5.5 is aimed at real-time, high-volume, cost-sensitive processing. These labels are workflow guidance, not a promise that every repository will favor the most expensive model.

Gemini’s coding and agent evidence
Google DeepMind reports Gemini 3.5 Flash results across coding, agentic workflows, UI control, expert tasks, multimodal reasoning, long context, and academic reasoning. Its published coding examples include 76.2% on Terminal-Bench 2.1, 55.1% on SWE-Bench Pro (Public), and 83.6% on MCP Atlas. Those figures are vendor-reported under the stated evaluation setups; they do not establish that Gemini will fix your code more accurately than another model in your environment.
Gemini’s distribution through Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Gemini App, Gemini Enterprise App, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Google Search AI Mode, and Google Antigravity can be valuable when your development workflow already uses those surfaces. Check which tools and model versions are enabled in your account rather than assuming every Gemini-branded product exposes the same agent abilities.
ChatGPT and OpenAI’s coding evidence
OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra comparison reports 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, 74.1% on DeepSWE v1.1, 64.5% on FrontierCode 1.1 Extended, and 67.0 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index. OpenAI labels these evaluation scores as the maximum at any effort. It also says the evaluations ran in its research environment or API and may produce slightly different output from production ChatGPT because system prompts and available tools differ.
That qualification is decisive for a buying decision. Treat GPT-6 Astra’s numbers as evidence about the evaluated model and harness, then test the ChatGPT plan, workspace, or API configuration you will actually use.
A practical coding test
Use a disposable branch or copy of a real repository. Give each service the same instructions, files, permissions, and time budget. Score the work rather than the prose.

- Repository navigation: Ask for an architecture summary with file paths and request that it identify the smallest change needed. Check every cited path.
- Bug diagnosis: Provide a failing test or reproducible error. Score whether the model finds the root cause instead of masking the symptom.
- Implementation: Require a patch that follows existing conventions. Record changed files, deleted code, and any assumptions.
- Terminal agency: Permit the same commands for each model. Note whether it runs tests before declaring success and whether it handles a failed command correctly.
- Refactoring: Ask for a cross-file change with backward-compatibility requirements. Inspect API changes, migration notes, and untouched call sites.
- Test quality: Run the full suite plus hidden or adversarial cases. Separate tests that genuinely catch regressions from tests that merely reproduce the implementation.
- Safety and review: Check whether it requests confirmation before destructive commands, exposes secrets, or edits outside the requested scope.
| What to measure | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Correctness | Passing tests, static-analysis results, and human review of edge cases |
| Repository understanding | Accurate file references, dependency awareness, and a plan that matches the codebase |
| Agent reliability | Recovery from failed commands, bounded edits, and clear stopping conditions |
| Maintainability | Consistency with local style, documentation, and quality of generated tests |
| Cost and speed | Elapsed time, tool calls, tokens, retries, and any rate-limit failures |
Research: discovery, synthesis, and citation discipline
Research quality has several independent parts. A model can find many sources but misquote them, summarize accurately but fail to expose uncertainty, or handle a large report yet miss the one table that answers your question. Test source discovery, extraction, synthesis, citation placement, and the ability to distinguish established facts from inference.

Anthropic assigns Fable 5.1 to multistep deep research and analysis carried through to a finished document, spreadsheet, or deck. It assigns Opus 5.5 to complex systems work and long-running agents, Sonnet 5.5 to everyday content and agentic tool use, and Haiku 5.5 to high-volume, low-latency processing. This matrix is useful for choosing a workflow, but you still need to verify browsing availability, source access, and export features in your plan.
Gemini’s long-context and multimodal advantage
Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash model card lists text, images, audio, and video as inputs, a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and a maximum output of 64,000 tokens. That combination is useful for a research packet containing interviews, scans, recordings, and long reports. A large window does not guarantee perfect recall: ask targeted questions, request page or timestamp references, and spot-check claims against the original material.
Gemini 3.5 Flash’s published academic and long-context examples include 84.2% on CharXiv and 40.2% on Humanity’s Last Exam. Google reports these results as of May 2026. They indicate capability under Google’s conditions, not an assurance of citation accuracy in your browser session.
ChatGPT’s academic and long-context evidence
OpenAI reports 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 96.0% on GPQA Diamond, and 57.2% on Humanity’s Last Exam with tools for GPT-6 Astra. Its OpenAI MRCR v2 8-needle scores are 100.0% for 256K–512K context and 96.3% for 512K–1M. OpenAI states that these are maximum scores at any effort and that research or API conditions may differ from production ChatGPT.

Research test protocol
- Source discovery: Ask for a source list restricted to a defined date range and source type. Open every link yourself and remove inaccessible or irrelevant items.
- Evidence extraction: Give the model a report and ask for claims with page, section, table, or timestamp references. Test several facts that are easy to confuse.
- Synthesis: Require a brief answer and a longer memo from the same evidence set. Look for contradictions, missing qualifications, and invented connective tissue.
- Uncertainty: Include at least one question whose answer is not established by the sources. A reliable system should say what is unknown rather than fill the gap.
- Citation audit: Check that each citation supports the sentence it follows and that quotations, dates, units, and geographic scope are accurate.
- Long-context retrieval: Put the decisive fact in different positions in a long document and measure whether the model finds it without leading hints.
Writing: tone control is only one part of quality
For writing, compare instruction following, factual discipline, structure, revision behavior, and the ability to preserve a house style. Ask each model to produce the same outline, draft, revision, and final compliance check instead of judging a single first draft.
Prompts that expose useful differences
- Tone transfer: Supply a short style sample and request a new article that matches its sentence length, formality, and vocabulary without copying phrases.
- Constraint handling: Specify audience, word range, prohibited claims, required headings, and a list of facts that must remain qualified.
- Revision: Give an intentionally flawed draft and ask for a change log followed by a clean version. Check that it fixes only the requested problems.
- Fact discipline: Mix confirmed facts with unknowns and require explicit labels for each. Penalize plausible additions that are not supported.
- Format control: Request valid HTML, JSON, a table, or a script and validate the output mechanically.
Claude’s matrix places Sonnet 5.5 in content creation and visual understanding, while Haiku 5.5 targets high-volume, low-latency work. Gemini’s native handling of images, audio, and video can help when the writing brief depends on non-text references. ChatGPT’s broad tool environment can be useful when drafting is connected to files, code, or other work in the same workspace. Verify the exact integrations available to you before selecting a service.
Multimodal input and context limits
Gemini 3.5 Flash is explicitly natively multimodal, accepting text, images, audio, and video, with up to 1 million tokens of context and 64,000 tokens of output. Those are model-card limits, not a promise that every Gemini application accepts every combination at those maxima.
Claude and ChatGPT can also support files, images, and tools in particular products, but the available data does not establish one universal context limit or identical modality support for every Claude or ChatGPT plan. Compare the exact application or API documentation for your account, then test representative files. Context capacity is valuable only if retrieval, privacy controls, latency, and cost fit your workflow.
Speed, cost, integrations, and data governance
Do not infer price from a benchmark table. Subscription prices, API rates, usage caps, model availability, and promotional terms change by region and date. Compare the recurring subscription you need with expected API usage, tool calls, storage, and overage limits. A cheaper per-token model can cost more if it needs repeated retries or human cleanup.

Measure latency at the task level: time to first useful response, time to a completed answer, and time spent waiting for tools. Haiku 5.5 is positioned for real-time, high-volume processing; that may matter more for classification or drafting at scale than a small quality advantage on a single prompt.
For integrations, list the systems the model must reach: source repositories, cloud drives, ticketing systems, browsers, terminals, spreadsheets, or internal APIs. Confirm authentication, least-privilege scopes, audit logs, retention, training-use settings, regional processing, and administrator controls. Never paste confidential code, personal data, credentials, or regulated records until your organization’s policy and the service’s current terms permit it.

Anthropic’s public matrix is not a single score table. It is a selection guide: Fable 5.1 for hours-long agents and deep research, Opus 5.5 for complex agentic coding and computer use, Sonnet 5.5 for everyday coding and content creation, and Haiku 5.5 for fast, cost-sensitive volume.
How to run a fair three-way bake-off
- Define the decision: Write down the jobs, acceptable error rate, maximum monthly spend, latency target, and data restrictions.
- Build a task set: Use five to ten representative coding, research, and writing tasks. Include at least one difficult edge case in each category.
- Freeze conditions: Record model identifier, date, plan, system instructions, tools, context setting, temperature or effort controls, and uploaded files.
- Use blinded review: Remove model names from outputs when possible. Have a subject-matter reviewer score correctness, completeness, citations, style, and safety.
- Track operational cost: Record tokens, tool calls, retries, elapsed time, rate-limit errors, and human editing minutes.
- Repeat important tasks: Run more than one attempt when variability matters. Preserve the prompts and outputs so a later model update can be compared.
- Choose a fit, not a trophy: Select the service that meets your threshold at an acceptable total cost and governance risk. Keep a second option for outages or tasks where it clearly performs better.
Decision guide by primary job
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multihour autonomous coding and large refactors | Claude Opus 5.5 | Anthropic explicitly positions it for these workflows | Terminal permissions, test recovery, repository size, and plan access |
| Everyday coding plus content creation | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Anthropic assigns it to code generation, analysis, content, and agentic tools | Accuracy on your stack and total retry cost |
| Hours-long deep research delivered as a finished artifact | Claude Fable 5.1 | Anthropic’s matrix targets this workflow | Source access, citation quality, export format, and availability |
| High-volume, low-latency processing | Claude Haiku 5.5 | Anthropic positions it for real-time, cost-sensitive volume | Error rate at scale and rate limits |
| Mixed text, image, audio, and video research | Gemini 3.5 Flash | Its model card explicitly lists all four input types | File-size limits, retrieval accuracy, privacy, and application-specific support |
| Very large document sets | Gemini 3.5 Flash or GPT-6 Astra, then test | Gemini lists up to 1M-token context; OpenAI reports strong MRCR v2 results up to 1M | Needle retrieval, latency, cost, and production-versus-API behavior |
| Broad coding, computer-use, and academic evaluation coverage | ChatGPT with the relevant OpenAI model | OpenAI publishes results across these categories | Exact ChatGPT tools and system prompts versus the evaluated environment |
Common mistakes that produce a bad choice
- Comparing brand names instead of model IDs: Record the exact version and interface.
- Using one clever prompt: A single demonstration says little about repository work, citations, or revision reliability.
- Treating vendor scores as interchangeable: Different benchmarks and harnesses can reverse the apparent order.
- Ignoring tools: Browser access, terminal permissions, file search, and connectors can dominate the result.
- Rewarding confident prose: Score verified facts, passing tests, and supported citations.
- Forgetting production differences: OpenAI specifically warns that research/API evaluations may differ from production ChatGPT because of system prompts and tools.
- Skipping governance review: A technically strong model is unsuitable if it cannot meet your retention, access, or regional-processing requirements.
- Failing to retest after updates: Re-run a small fixed suite whenever a model, plan, connector, or system prompt changes.
A sensible way to pay
Start with the service that matches your highest-value workflow, not the one with the most impressive isolated score. If your work is evenly split, run the same evaluation set in all three and calculate a weighted score: correctness first, then reliability, latency, cost, and governance. Subscription access is usually easiest for individual exploration; an API or enterprise configuration may be better when you need automation, centralized controls, or repeatable logging. Confirm current regional pricing, quotas, and commercial terms directly before committing, because they change.
