There is no single privacy winner. Claude is the strongest documented choice for least-privilege connector use: it lets users toggle individual Google connectors, mirrors the connected account’s existing permissions, and requires approval for sensitive actions by default. ChatGPT is strongest for organization-wide governance, with documented app permission modes, verified-domain restrictions, compliance-event review, and no-training-by-default app data for Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces. Gemini is the best fit when native Google integration and broad connected-app support matter most, but it requires careful management of Activity, human-review exposure, retention, and third-party MCP services.
The right choice depends on what you mean by “private”: limiting an assistant’s access, preventing model-improvement use, controlling administrators, deleting retained data, or keeping third-party services inside their own boundaries. The comparison below separates those issues instead of treating privacy as one score.

What the comparison measures
AI privacy has several independent controls. A service can be excellent at one and weaker at another, so compare the actual control you need.

- Connector least privilege: whether you can enable only selected connectors, inspect the scope granted at connection time, approve actions, and revoke access.
- Administrative governance: whether an organization can allow or disable apps, restrict connections by domain, review events, and establish retention rules.
- Retention and deletion: what remains after you delete a chat or activity record, including material reviewed by people or stored in logs.
- Third-party boundaries: whether the connected service, app, or MCP server applies separate storage, processing, privacy, and data-residency terms.
Connector access also does not override the source service’s permissions. In all three ecosystems, the assistant operates within important account, app, or provider boundaries; connecting an account is not the same as granting unrestricted access to every item in it.

At-a-glance verdict
| Privacy question | Claude | ChatGPT | Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Least-privilege connector workflow | Strongest documented controls: per-connector toggles, existing Google permission mirroring, and approval for sensitive actions by default. | Permission prompts are configurable, but prompts do not expand the access granted when the app was connected. | Broad Google and third-party connectivity; users must separately manage Connected Apps, Activity, and MCP risk. |
| Model-improvement handling | Consumer chats may be used when the user opts in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or under another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded. | Business, Enterprise, and Edu app data is not used for training by default. Consumer Free, Plus, Go, and Pro users may have app data used when “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled. | Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, but chats are still processed to respond and protect users. |
| Organization-wide governance | Team and Enterprise owners must enable Google Workspace connectors before users authenticate and can control available actions. | Strongest documented governance: administrators can disable apps, restrict Enterprise connections by verified domain, and review app and conversation events in eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces. | Connected-app and Activity controls are available to users, while custom third-party MCP servers remain outside Google’s control. |
| Deletion and retention caveats | Retrieved connector data is retained with its chat and is deleted when that chat is deleted. Feedback-related conversations may be stored in a secured backend for up to five years. | The documented controls emphasize authorization, workspace policy, and event review; retention also depends on the connected third party’s terms. | Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, with 3-month, 36-month, or indefinite options. Human-reviewed chats and related data may remain for up to three years after activity deletion. |
| Best fit | Users who want explicit approvals and narrow Google Workspace access. | Organizations that need centralized policy, domain restrictions, and compliance visibility. | People who value native Google integration and accept more hands-on activity and third-party controls. |
Claude: strongest documented least-privilege connector design
Claude’s advantage is the granularity of its Google Workspace connector workflow. Gmail, Calendar, and Drive connectors are available to Claude users. For Team and Enterprise accounts, an owner must enable the connectors before a user can authenticate. That creates an administrative gate before any individual account is linked.
Model-improvement controls
Anthropic says consumer conversations and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude when the user opts in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or under another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled in the user’s privacy settings.
Anthropic also distinguishes raw connector material from text a user deliberately places in a conversation. It says Gmail, Drive, and Calendar connector data is not used to train models. If a user copies connector content into the chat itself, that copied content can be exposed to model improvement when the user has opted in. The boundary is therefore operational: retrieved data stays outside training under the connector policy, while pasted excerpts become ordinary conversation content.
Per-connector and per-action controls
Users can toggle individual connectors instead of accepting one all-or-nothing Google connection. Claude accesses only data available to the connected Google account, so existing Gmail, Calendar, and Drive permissions continue to constrain what it can retrieve.
Sensitive actions require approval by default. Claude asks before sending or forwarding Gmail messages and before sharing, moving, or trashing Drive files. Team or Enterprise owners can permit some actions without repeated prompts, trading convenience for fewer approval checkpoints. That setting should be treated as a deliberate policy decision, not as a harmless usability preference.

Retention and deletion
Retrieved connector data is retained with the chat that used it. Deleting that chat deletes the retrieved connector data associated with it, giving users a concrete cleanup action for connector-derived material.
A separate rule applies to feedback. Anthropic says feedback-related conversations can be stored in a secured backend for up to five years. That is a feedback-specific retention period, not a statement that every Claude chat is kept for five years.
When Claude is the better choice
- You want to enable Drive, Gmail, or Calendar separately rather than grant a broad bundle.
- You want an approval prompt before messages are sent or files are shared, moved, or trashed.
- You need the assistant to inherit the connected Google account’s existing permissions.
- You can enforce a Team or Enterprise owner approval step before users authenticate connectors.
Claude is not automatically the best choice for centralized compliance. Its documented strengths here are narrow access and action approval; organizations should verify that its available administrative logging and retention controls meet their own requirements.
ChatGPT: strongest documented enterprise governance
ChatGPT separates what an app is allowed to do from how often it asks for confirmation. OpenAI documents four app permission modes: Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, and, for eligible apps or accounts, Allow all actions.
Why permission prompts do not expand access
Changing a permission prompt does not grant an app new access. The underlying scope is determined by the app, the authorization granted when it was connected, and workspace controls. “Always ask” can add a confirmation checkpoint, but it cannot turn a read-only authorization into permission to edit or send. Conversely, selecting a less-interruptive mode does not by itself authorize data that was never included in the original connection.

Users can disconnect apps, and administrators can disable them. For a work deployment, the connection policy should be set before users begin attaching personal or departmental services so that revocation does not become the only control.

OpenAI says app data from Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces is not used to train models by default. Consumer Free, Plus, Go, and Pro users may have app data used for training when Improve the model for everyone is turned on. The practical distinction is therefore both plan-based and setting-based: a consumer user should check that setting, while a qualifying business workspace starts from a no-training-by-default posture for app data.
Enterprise restrictions and compliance review
OpenAI documents verified-domain restrictions for Enterprise connections. An organization can use those restrictions to limit which domains may be connected, reducing the chance that users attach an unapproved tenant or personal account.
Eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces can review app and conversation events through the Compliance Platform. This is a governance advantage for organizations that need evidence of connection and usage activity rather than relying on individual user reports.
OpenAI also documents encryption in transit and at rest. Administrators can manage app availability without automatically gaining access to members’ ordinary private conversations; app governance and routine conversation visibility are separate concepts.

Third-party service boundaries
OpenAI warns that connected services apply their own storage, processing, privacy, and data-residency terms. A compliant ChatGPT workspace cannot erase those obligations. Before connecting a service, review what that provider stores, where it processes data, how it handles deletion, and whether its administrators can inspect the same records.
When ChatGPT is the better choice
- You need a central administrator to permit or disable apps across a workspace.
- Your Enterprise deployment requires verified-domain restrictions.
- You need app and conversation event review through an eligible compliance system.
- You want a documented no-training-by-default posture for Business, Enterprise, or Edu app data.
ChatGPT is less straightforward if your primary requirement is per-connector least privilege at the individual user level. Its permission modes govern prompts and action categories, while the connection’s original authorization and workspace policy determine the real data boundary.
Gemini: deepest Google integration, with the most important retention caveats
Gemini is compelling when Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and other Google services are central to daily work. Its privacy controls, however, span several separate areas: Gemini Apps Activity, Connected Apps, human review, and third-party MCP tools.
Activity and auto-delete settings
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says the default Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete period is 18 months. Users can change that setting to 3 months, 36 months, or keep activity indefinitely. Users can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity and manage Connected Apps separately, so deleting one category should not be assumed to revoke or erase the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHuman review and the three-year caveat
Google says some chats and related data are reviewed by human reviewers, including trained reviewers from service providers. Human-reviewed chats and related data may be retained for up to three years, even after the user deletes Gemini Apps Activity. That makes ordinary activity deletion insufficient for a user who needs every reviewed copy removed immediately; the review-retention rule is the controlling caveat.
Best Value
What turning off Keep Activity does
Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services. It does not stop Gemini from using those chats to provide responses or protect users. The setting reduces one form of secondary use; it is not an offline mode and not a promise that the service will forget a conversation instantly.
Connected apps and custom MCP servers
Gemini can collect information from Connected Apps, including third-party services and MCP server tools. Google warns that custom third-party MCP servers are not controlled, monitored, or secured by Google. A user should therefore evaluate an MCP server as a separate vendor with its own code, operator, storage, and security posture rather than treating it as a Google-managed extension.
When Gemini is the better choice
- Your priority is native Google-service integration and a broad connected-app ecosystem.
- You are willing to set a shorter Activity auto-delete period and review Connected Apps separately.
- You can accept that some human-reviewed data may remain for up to three years.
- You can avoid untrusted custom MCP servers or assess each one independently.
How the controls differ in real use
If you need an assistant to read Gmail or Drive
Claude offers the clearest narrow-access pattern in the documented material: enable only the relevant connector, inherit the Google account’s existing permissions, and keep approval prompts for actions. ChatGPT requires you to inspect the authorization granted at connection time; its prompt mode does not enlarge that scope. Gemini can connect deeply to Google services, but you must also manage Connected Apps and Activity, and account for Google’s human-review and retention rules.
If you need to prevent model-improvement use
For Claude, use Incognito chats for conversations that should not improve the model and avoid copying sensitive connector output into an ordinary chat when Model Improvement is enabled. For ChatGPT, a consumer user should turn off Improve the model for everyone; Business, Enterprise, and Edu app data is not used for training by default. For Gemini, turn off Keep Activity to stop future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, while remembering that the service still processes chats to answer and protect users.
If you need a company-wide policy
ChatGPT has the strongest documented administrative package in this comparison: app availability controls, verified-domain restrictions for Enterprise, compliance-event review for eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and encryption in transit and at rest. Claude provides owner enablement for Team and Enterprise connectors and action-policy controls. Gemini provides user-facing Activity and Connected App settings, but custom MCP servers sit outside Google’s control and therefore require separate governance.
If deletion must be predictable
Claude gives a direct relationship between a chat and retrieved connector data: deleting the chat deletes that retrieved data. Gemini’s deletion model is more complex because human-reviewed chats and related data may persist for up to three years after Activity deletion. ChatGPT’s connected services retain their own terms and records, so deletion planning must include the third-party provider rather than relying solely on ChatGPT’s disconnect control.
Practical setup checklists
Claude checklist
- For a Team or Enterprise workspace, have an owner enable only the Google Workspace connectors the organization needs.
- Toggle individual Gmail, Calendar, and Drive connectors rather than enabling an unnecessary bundle.
- Confirm that the Google account being connected already has the correct sharing and access permissions.
- Keep approval prompts enabled for sending or forwarding Gmail and for sharing, moving, or trashing Drive files unless a documented policy justifies automatic action.
- Use Incognito for conversations that should not be used to improve Claude.
- Delete the chat when its retrieved connector data is no longer needed, and avoid pasting sensitive connector output into a model-improvement-eligible conversation.
ChatGPT checklist
- Decide whether the connection belongs in a consumer account or a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace.
- Review the app authorization granted at connection time; do not treat a prompt setting as a substitute for scope review.
- Choose among Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, or an eligible Allow all actions mode according to the risk of the app.
- Disconnect apps that are no longer required and ask an administrator to disable apps that should be unavailable workspace-wide.
- For Enterprise, apply verified-domain restrictions and use Compliance Platform event review where eligible.
- Consumer users should check Improve the model for everyone; qualifying business workspaces begin with app data excluded from training by default.
- Review the connected service’s own storage, processing, privacy, and residency terms.
Gemini checklist
- Review Connected Apps separately from Gemini Apps Activity so you know which services are linked and which activity is retained.
- Set Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete to 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite according to the sensitivity and operational need.
- Turn off Keep Activity if future chats should not be reviewed to improve Google services.
- Remember that Keep Activity off does not stop processing required to answer requests or protect users.
- Before using a custom MCP server, evaluate its operator, code, data handling, and security independently; Google does not control, monitor, or secure custom third-party MCP servers.
- Do not assume deleting Activity removes human-reviewed chats that may be retained for up to three years.
Decision guide by priority
| Your priority | Best documented fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow Google Workspace access with approval before risky actions | Claude | Individual connector toggles, permission mirroring, and default approval for sensitive Gmail and Drive actions. |
| Centralized enterprise app policy and audit visibility | ChatGPT | Workspace app controls, verified-domain restrictions for Enterprise, and eligible compliance-event review. |
| Native Google ecosystem integration and broad connected apps | Gemini | Deep Google-service connectivity, provided you manage Activity, retention, human review, and third-party tools. |
| Consumer control over model-improvement exposure | Claude or ChatGPT, depending on workflow | Claude offers Incognito chats; ChatGPT exposes the consumer “Improve the model for everyone” setting. Gemini’s Keep Activity control addresses future improvement review but not all processing or retention. |
| Simple deletion of retrieved connector material | Claude | Retrieved connector data is tied to its chat and is deleted with that chat, subject to separate feedback-retention rules. |
What the “strongest privacy” claim does—and does not—mean
Calling Claude strongest for least-privilege connectors does not mean every Claude conversation has the shortest retention or the broadest enterprise audit tooling. Calling ChatGPT strongest for governance does not mean its permission prompts control the underlying app authorization. Calling Gemini strongest for Google integration does not mean Activity deletion immediately removes every reviewed copy.

Privacy depends on configuration as much as on the product name. A user who enables every connector, authorizes a broad account, accepts automatic actions, leaves model-improvement settings on, and connects an untrusted third-party service can defeat the protections that exist on paper. The safest deployment is the one that grants the smallest useful scope, keeps high-impact actions behind approval, limits secondary use, and includes the connected provider in the deletion and compliance plan.
