Neither Claude nor ChatGPT is universally safer for Instagram work. The safer choice depends on the exact mode and account you use: Claude consumer chat, Claude Incognito, ChatGPT personal chat, ChatGPT Temporary Chat, a managed workspace, or an API. For most creators, the practical safeguards are the same: redact briefs, disable model-improvement use where possible, avoid feedback on sensitive conversations, and never paste passwords, recovery codes, session cookies, API tokens or unredacted customer lists.
What the comparison actually measures
Privacy for Instagram content has two separate parts. Content privacy concerns whether prompts, drafts and client information can be retained, reviewed or used to improve a model. Account safety concerns whether anything you give the chatbot could help someone access your Instagram account or impersonate you. A service can have strong privacy controls while your workflow remains unsafe if you paste credentials or publish unreviewed links.

The policies summarized here are official Anthropic and OpenAI guidance available in 2026. Settings, retention terms and feature availability can vary by plan, region, account and workspace, so check the current policy for the account you will actually use.

These are different control models, not a laboratory safety ranking. Neither vendor’s public documentation establishes that its chatbot is categorically safer for Instagram accounts.

How Claude handles Instagram drafts
Consumer chat and improvement settings
Anthropic’s consumer guidance says conversations and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude when you permit that use, explicitly opt in, or when a conversation is flagged for safety review. A flagged conversation can therefore be handled for enforcement and for improving detection of policy violations even if you did not intend to submit it as training material.
Anthropic says: “Your conversations are flagged for safety review (in which case we may use or analyze them to improve our ability to detect and enforce our Usage Policy…).”
That wording matters to creators handling embargoed campaigns or client information. It means you should not promise a client that a normal consumer chat is absolutely confidential. Use a workspace or contractual arrangement that your organization has approved when the brief contains information you are obligated to protect.

Incognito mode
Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if the account’s ordinary model-improvement setting is enabled. Incognito is therefore a sensible default for a disposable brainstorming session containing a redacted product brief.

The cited Anthropic guidance does not establish a short, fixed deletion window equivalent to ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat window. Do not infer that “not used to improve Claude” means “immediately deleted,” “absent from all operational logs,” or “inaccessible for safety enforcement.” Keep the prompt minimal and remove identifying details before sending it.
Retention and safety review
Anthropic’s Privacy Center reports several different maximum periods, depending on why data is retained: up to five years for opted-in, de-identified data; up to two years for inputs and outputs associated with a flagged conversation; and up to seven years for trust-and-safety classification scores. These are policy limits, not a statement that every chat remains identifiable for the full period.
For an Instagram manager, the practical rule is to avoid putting the original client record in the chat at all. Replace names, email addresses, order numbers, unpublished URLs and exact audience exports with neutral labels before asking for captions or scripts.
How ChatGPT handles Instagram drafts
Turning off model improvement
On a personal account, open the setting labeled Improve the model for everyone and switch it off. OpenAI says new conversations after opting out are not used to improve its models. The setting does not retroactively erase earlier chats, and it does not override every other processing purpose described in OpenAI’s policies.

Feedback is a separate risk. OpenAI documents that a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can make the entire conversation associated with that feedback eligible for training, even after you have turned off the general improvement setting. Do not rate a conversation that contains sensitive client material; start a clean, redacted chat if you need to test an answer.
Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat is the clearest one-off option for sensitive brainstorming. OpenAI states:
“Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve our models.”

OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Temporary status also does not make the prompt safe to share: anyone who can see your screen, browser history, clipboard or exported text may still obtain it. Confirm that the temporary indicator is active before pasting a brief, and do not save the resulting conversation elsewhere with the original identifiers.

Memory, plans and workspaces
Temporary Chat’s memory behavior is explicit. Ordinary chats may interact with memory features, while a managed workspace can have different retention, administrator access and contractual terms from a personal account. OpenAI notes that features vary by plan, region, account and workspace. Ask the workspace administrator which conversations are retained, who can access them and whether organization data is excluded from model improvement before using a client brief.
What to paste—and what must stay out
Safe inputs for most caption and Reels tasks
- A generalized audience description, such as “first-time home cooks aged 25–40,” without an exported customer list.
- Public product features and an approved tone guide.
- A redacted campaign objective, posting date and call-to-action.
- A rough, non-confidential transcript or a shot list with names replaced by roles.
- Publicly available hashtags, topics and brand adjectives.
Never provide these secrets
- Instagram passwords, two-factor authentication recovery codes or one-time codes.
- Session cookies, browser storage exports, login screenshots or password-reset links.
- API tokens, webhook secrets or credentials for a social-media scheduler.
- Unredacted customer lists, direct-message exports, payment details or identity documents.
- Private influencer contracts, unpublished launch dates or embargoed pricing unless your approved business workspace explicitly permits that processing.
A chatbot does not need account access to write a hook, caption, shot list or content calendar. Generate text in the AI tool, then publish through Instagram’s normal authenticated interface. Never ask the model to “log in,” paste a cookie, or click a security link on your behalf.
A privacy-first Instagram workflow
- Classify the material. Mark the brief as public, internal, confidential or regulated. If it contains personal data or an embargo, use the account and workspace approved by your organization—or remove those details before using a consumer chat.
- Redact before opening the chat. Replace personal names with roles such as
HOST_1, remove email addresses and order IDs, and summarize audience data instead of uploading a row-level export. - Choose the narrowest mode. For a disposable idea session, use Claude Incognito or ChatGPT Temporary Chat. For recurring calendars, turn off model improvement where available and use a managed workspace when your contract requires one.
- State the output boundary. Tell the model to return captions, hooks, shot lists or a calendar only. Do not request account actions, credential handling or access to private messages.
- Check for accidental disclosure. Before copying the answer, search it for names, links, discount codes, phone numbers and internal campaign details that should not be public.
- Review safety and accuracy. Confirm that claims are approved, links point to the intended destination, mentions are correct and calls to action do not ask followers to disclose sensitive information.
- Publish normally. Paste the final copy into Instagram’s authenticated app or website. Keep the AI session separate from the account login and do not upload screenshots containing account controls.
- Clean up local copies. Delete downloaded transcripts, shared documents and clipboard history when they contain information that should not persist. Remember that deleting a local copy does not change a vendor’s retention policy.
Choosing a mode for common creator situations

Account-safety failure modes and fixes
“The model asked for my login”
Stop. A caption generator does not require an Instagram password, recovery code or session cookie. Close the prompt, revoke any secret that was already exposed, change the password from Instagram’s official interface and review active sessions. If a token was pasted, rotate it through the service that issued it.

Assume the image contains more than you intended: usernames, email addresses, recovery prompts and session information can be visible at the edges. Delete the upload where possible, change exposed credentials and provide a text description with all identifiers removed instead.
“I turned off improvement but then rated the answer”
OpenAI documents a feedback exception for personal accounts. Treat the associated conversation as eligible for training and avoid using feedback controls on sensitive sessions. Start a new redacted chat for quality testing.
“I used Incognito or Temporary Chat, so I pasted the entire client file”
Private-session labels reduce certain uses; they do not authorize sharing data you are not allowed to disclose. Redaction and contractual approval are still required, and safety review or operational retention may still apply.
“The caption contains a private link or unapproved claim”
Review every URL, mention, price, health statement and contest instruction manually. AI output can reproduce details from your prompt without knowing whether they are legally or commercially approved.
Questions to settle with a client or team
- Is this a personal consumer account, a managed workspace or an API integration?
- Which model-improvement and feedback settings are enabled?
- Does the workspace allow memory, administrator review or exports?
- How long may prompts and outputs be retained, and for what safety purpose?
- Who is authorized to paste customer or influencer data?
- What is the incident process if a password, token or private brief is exposed?
Document the answers in the campaign’s data-handling notes. A creator should be able to explain why a particular mode was selected before the first confidential prompt is sent.
Bottom line for Instagram creators
Use Claude Incognito or ChatGPT Temporary Chat for short, redacted brainstorming; use model-improvement controls and an approved managed workspace for recurring or client work; and keep every credential outside the chatbot. Claude’s consumer policy allows improvement use through opt-in and safety-review paths, while ChatGPT’s personal opt-out has a documented feedback exception. ChatGPT Temporary Chat explicitly avoids history and memory but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety; Anthropic documents longer possible retention periods for opted-in or flagged data. Those differences help you choose a mode, but neither product is Instagram-approved by the evidence available here, and neither replaces sound account security.
