Claude on AWS Bedrock vs. the Direct Anthropic API: Which Should You Use?

Choose Amazon Bedrock when AWS must operate inference, your security model depends on AWS IAM and audit controls, AWS must be the sole data processor, or your workload needs applicable AWS compliance-program coverage. Choose the direct Anthropic API when you want Anthropic’s native Messages API, first-party model and feature releases, and a single Anthropic commercial relationship. A third option, Claude Platform on AWS, combines AWS Marketplace purchasing with an Anthropic-operated service; it is not the same product as Bedrock.

The right decision is therefore less about Claude’s model quality than about the operator, API contract, identity system, quota owner, data path, release timing, geography, and billing account behind the model.

The three ways to use Claude through an AWS-related purchase

“Claude on AWS” can describe three materially different services. Treating them as interchangeable creates avoidable migration, compliance, and cost problems.

Direct Anthropic API

The direct Claude API is operated by Anthropic. You use Anthropic’s native API resources, credentials, account controls, limits, and billing relationship. Anthropic documents the service as global by default, while account-specific limits, data-residency choices, service tiers, and feature availability depend on the current terms for your organization.

Claude on Amazon Bedrock

Amazon Bedrock is operated by AWS. The documented interfaces include Bedrock Converse, InvokeModel, and a Bedrock endpoint for Anthropic’s Messages API. Authentication uses AWS mechanisms such as IAM and Signature Version 4 (SigV4), or other Bedrock-supported credentials. Before invoking a model, an administrator generally requests or enables model access in the Bedrock console.

Claude Platform on AWS

Claude Platform on AWS is operated by Anthropic but purchased through AWS. It provides Anthropic’s native Messages API, Anthropic-managed quotas, and access to models and features on Anthropic’s release cadence. AWS Marketplace handles the commercial transaction through Claude Consumption Units (CCUs). This is a distinct Anthropic platform offering, not an alternative name for Bedrock.

When Amazon Bedrock is the better choice

AWS-operated inference is a hard requirement

Bedrock is the clearest fit when your policy requires AWS to operate the inference stack. AWS’s own comparison guidance says to choose Bedrock when an organization requires AWS-operated inference, AWS as the sole data processor, or coverage under AWS compliance programs. The programs named in that guidance include FedRAMP High, IL4, IL5, SOC, ISO, and HIPAA eligibility. Eligibility is not the same as automatic compliance: you still have to configure the account, region, logging, retention, access policies, and workload controls correctly.

Your identity and audit controls are already AWS-centered

Bedrock lets a team apply IAM roles, permission boundaries, service-control policies, VPC and network controls where supported, CloudTrail activity records, and AWS cost-allocation practices already used for other workloads. The recommended Bedrock runtime Messages API uses AWS SDK integrations and IAM authentication. Bedrock invocation logging can be enabled for operational and audit workflows, subject to your organization’s retention and privacy policy.

This arrangement is valuable when application identities already exist as AWS roles. It avoids creating a second long-lived API-key system, but it also means that a developer cannot simply copy a direct Anthropic API request and expect it to work. AWS authorization, region selection, model access, and request envelopes become part of the application’s runtime contract.

You need AWS procurement and consolidated spend

Bedrock charges through AWS. That can simplify purchase orders, consolidated billing, budgets, chargeback, and organization-wide reporting when AWS is already the required vendor of record. It does not guarantee the lowest unit cost: compare the same model, token mix, endpoint type, caching behavior, batch mode, support tier, and negotiated discount before deciding.

Geographic routing must be controlled

Bedrock offers global endpoints that dynamically route requests for availability and regional endpoints that guarantee geographic routing. Global routing is useful when resilience and capacity matter more than a fixed processing location. A regional endpoint is the safer choice when contracts or internal policy require requests to stay within a specified geography, but applicable newer Claude models carry a 10% premium for regional endpoints, according to Anthropic’s 2026 documentation. Confirm that the model and region you plan to use are covered by that pricing rule.

You can design around Bedrock’s payload limits

Anthropic’s legacy Bedrock integration documentation lists a 20 MB maximum request payload. That is a byte-size limit on the request, not a promise about the model’s token capacity. Large PDFs, image collections, tool definitions, or serialized conversation history can hit 20 MB first. Measure the encoded request, remove unnecessary context, split documents, or use an appropriate file or retrieval architecture instead of assuming that a larger model context window removes this constraint.

When the direct Anthropic API is the better choice

You need Anthropic’s native API first

If your application is designed around the Messages API, the direct service avoids an AWS translation layer. Anthropic credentials, request formats, streaming behavior, tool-use semantics, files, prompt caching, and model identifiers follow Anthropic’s first-party documentation. This usually reduces the number of provider-specific adapters your team must maintain.

Feature-release timing matters

Anthropic-operated offerings generally receive new Claude models and platform features on Anthropic’s release cadence. Bedrock availability follows AWS’s integration and regional rollout schedule, which can lag a first-party release or restrict a model to selected regions. If a launch depends on a newly released parameter, tool capability, context feature, or model family, verify support on the exact endpoint rather than assuming that the word “Claude” means feature parity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWS governance is not a requirement

The direct API is usually simpler when your organization does not require AWS-only processing, IAM authorization, AWS compliance-program coverage, or consolidated AWS billing. You work with one vendor for API support, account limits, residency options, and invoices. Anthropic’s service terms can change, so verify current quotas, retention settings, service tiers, and regional options for the account that will serve production traffic.

Global operation is acceptable

Anthropic documents the direct API as global by default. That can make a multi-region application easier to operate, but “global” is not a substitute for a contractual residency guarantee. If a customer or regulator requires a specific processing geography, review Anthropic’s current data-residency options and the terms attached to your workspace before sending production data.

Why Claude Platform on AWS deserves a separate decision

Claude Platform on AWS targets organizations that want AWS procurement without adopting Bedrock’s AWS-operated service model. Anthropic operates the platform, provides the native Messages API, manages quotas, and documents same-day access to Claude API models and features. AWS Marketplace supplies the purchasing path.

Usage is metered in Claude Consumption Units. Anthropic describes the calculation as token usage multiplied by the applicable Anthropic rate, adjusted for any negotiated discount, then converted into CCUs and reported hourly. The documented price is $0.01 per CCU. That figure is the CCU unit price, not a universal per-token Claude price; your effective cost still depends on model, input and output volume, caching, discounts, and other account terms.

Choose this option when the commercial constraint is “buy through AWS” but the technical constraint is “use Anthropic’s platform.” Do not choose it expecting Bedrock IAM behavior, Bedrock quotas, Bedrock regional routing, or Bedrock’s AWS-operated inference assurances.

A practical decision framework

Use these questions in order. The first “yes” to a hard requirement usually determines the service.

  1. Must AWS operate inference or be the sole data processor? Choose Bedrock, then validate the exact compliance program, region, and configuration.
  2. Must requests use Anthropic’s newest native API features immediately? Start with the direct Anthropic API or Claude Platform on AWS; confirm the feature is available on your chosen platform.
  3. Must procurement and spend remain inside AWS Marketplace or AWS billing? Compare Bedrock with Claude Platform on AWS. Select Bedrock for AWS-operated governance; select Claude Platform on AWS for Anthropic-operated behavior.
  4. Does a contract require fixed geographic routing? Check Bedrock regional endpoints and their applicable 10% premium, or review Anthropic’s current residency options for the direct service.
  5. Are your quotas, support path, and incident ownership already standardized? Keep them with the operator your team is equipped to manage. AWS quotas and support differ from Anthropic quotas and support.
  6. Is the model available in the required region and interface? Verify the exact model-region pair and API surface before committing architecture or signing a purchase agreement.

API and authentication differences

Calling Claude through Bedrock

Bedrock presents three relevant choices: Converse, InvokeModel, and the Bedrock-hosted Messages API endpoint. Converse gives a more provider-neutral conversation interface; InvokeModel exposes model-specific request and response envelopes; the Messages API endpoint is useful when you want Anthropic-style semantics through a Bedrock regional URL.

In all cases, your application must use AWS credentials and authorize the relevant Bedrock actions. A typical deployment sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create or select an IAM role for the runtime, following least-privilege policy design.
  2. Select the AWS region in which the endpoint and model are supported.
  3. Request or enable model access in the Bedrock console and wait for the account to be approved.
  4. Choose Converse, InvokeModel, or the Bedrock Messages API endpoint and implement its required request envelope.
  5. Configure streaming, retries, timeouts, and error handling for the AWS SDK operation you selected.
  6. Enable invocation logging and CloudTrail records only in a way that matches your data-retention and sensitive-content policy.
  7. Load-test the exact model-region pair, including throttling and payload-size behavior, before production traffic is moved.

Calling the direct Anthropic API

The direct service uses Anthropic credentials and Anthropic’s endpoint and account controls. The implementation path is shorter, but production readiness still requires quota planning, secret management, retries, streaming tests, tool-use tests, and a review of retention and residency settings.

  1. Create an Anthropic workspace and production credential with the minimum practical permissions.
  2. Select the model and service tier documented for your account.
  3. Implement the native Messages API request and response format.
  4. Store credentials in a managed secret system rather than source code or client-side applications.
  5. Set application-level rate limits, exponential backoff, timeout budgets, and observability.
  6. Test the exact features you will use, including streaming, tools, files, prompt caching, and long-context requests.
  7. Confirm account-specific quota, data-processing, and residency terms before launch.

Calling Claude Platform on AWS

Claude Platform on AWS retains Anthropic’s Messages API behavior while using AWS Marketplace for billing. Follow the platform’s documented credential and endpoint setup, then verify whether your organization’s AWS identity, network, and procurement requirements are satisfied. Do not infer Bedrock compatibility from the fact that both services are accessed through AWS.

Migration considerations

Moving from the direct API to Bedrock

Plan for more than a URL change. A migration can require changes to endpoint construction, AWS authentication, model identifiers, request envelopes, streaming calls, error classes, retries, and logging. If you move to Converse, you may also need an adapter between Anthropic-specific message features and the Converse schema. If you use the Bedrock Messages API, you still need Bedrock regional URLs and the required Anthropic version parameters.

  • Inventory every model identifier and map it to the supported Bedrock identifier in each target region.
  • Replace API-key injection with IAM role assumption, SigV4 signing, or the credential method approved for your runtime.
  • Re-test tool calls, structured outputs, streaming, files, prompt caching, and image inputs independently.
  • Rebuild throttling and retry rules around Bedrock error responses and account quotas.
  • Check whether invocation logging captures content and whether that conflicts with your privacy policy.
  • Measure request size against the documented 20 MB legacy payload limit when that integration applies.

Moving from Bedrock to the direct API

You remove IAM/SigV4 signing and Bedrock model-access prerequisites, but you also remove AWS-native authorization and billing controls that may be embedded in your operations. Replace IAM policy checks, CloudTrail-based audit queries, invocation-logging workflows, AWS budgets, and regional endpoint assumptions with controls appropriate to the direct Anthropic service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the application’s provider adapter even after a migration. It lets you switch endpoints without spreading provider-specific authentication, model names, streaming code, and error handling throughout business logic.

Pricing, quotas, and procurement

Cost or control What is established What you must verify
Bedrock inference Charged through AWS; AWS publishes pricing options. Model, input/output token mix, caching, region, endpoint type, batch mode, support, and negotiated discounts.
Bedrock batch workloads Select Bedrock foundation-model batch workloads can be priced 50% below on-demand rates under AWS’s listed conditions. Whether your model, region, batch job, and timing satisfy those conditions.
Direct Anthropic API Charged through Anthropic under the account’s service terms. Current model rates, quotas, service tier, caching treatment, residency option, and support terms.
Claude Platform on AWS Anthropic converts usage into CCUs and reports them hourly; the documented CCU unit price is $0.01. Token rates, negotiated discount, model mix, and the resulting CCU consumption.

Never compare a Bedrock quote, an Anthropic quote, and a CCU quote as if they were the same unit. Build a worksheet with identical assumptions: model version, input tokens, output tokens, cache reads and writes, batch or real-time mode, endpoint geography, support tier, and discount. Include observability, network, storage, and engineering costs where they differ.

Compliance, privacy, and data routing

Processor and operator roles

Bedrock’s differentiator is AWS control of the inference stack and AWS’s role as data processor for the service. The direct API uses Anthropic’s processing terms. Claude Platform on AWS is Anthropic-operated, uses AWS infrastructure, and has its own documented data-processing relationship. Select the service whose legal and technical role matches your customer contracts; do not let an AWS invoice obscure who processes inference data.

Zero Data Retention and contractual controls

Claude Platform on AWS documentation states that Anthropic processes inference data as an independent data processor and that Zero Data Retention is available on request. Availability can depend on workspace, contract, and geography, so obtain written confirmation for the production account. Apply the same discipline to the direct API and Bedrock retention, logging, and support settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global versus regional endpoints

Global endpoints maximize routing flexibility and availability. Regional endpoints provide a geographic routing guarantee where supported, but applicable newer Claude models on Bedrock carry a 10% regional-endpoint premium. A regional endpoint does not automatically make every downstream system regional: review logs, queues, object storage, support access, backups, and telemetry as well.

Feature parity and operational pitfalls

  • Model availability: A Claude model available in Anthropic’s API may not yet be enabled in every Bedrock region.
  • Parameter differences: Request fields, required version parameters, stop reasons, metadata, and tool schemas can vary by interface.
  • Streaming: Event framing and SDK methods differ; test partial output, disconnects, and retry behavior.
  • Files and images: Validate MIME handling, size limits, encoding, and retention separately on each endpoint.
  • Prompt caching: Confirm eligibility, cache-key behavior, billing treatment, and expiration on the exact platform.
  • Quotas: A quota increase requested from AWS does not change Anthropic account limits, and vice versa.
  • Observability: Bedrock logs and CloudTrail integrate with AWS controls; direct API telemetry requires an Anthropic-compatible monitoring design.
  • Error handling: Do not classify every 4xx or 5xx response identically. Authentication, model access, throttling, payload size, and provider outages need different recovery paths.

Recommendations by workload

Workload situation Recommended starting point Reason
AWS-regulated application requiring AWS-operated inference and centralized IAM Amazon Bedrock Matches AWS governance, audit, procurement, and applicable compliance requirements.
Product team that needs the newest Anthropic API features without an AWS-only processing requirement Direct Anthropic API Uses the first-party API and Anthropic release cadence.
Company that must purchase through AWS Marketplace but wants Anthropic platform behavior Claude Platform on AWS Combines AWS procurement with Anthropic operation and quotas.
Global application with no fixed residency requirement Direct Anthropic API or Bedrock global endpoint Global routing can maximize availability; select based on operator and governance needs.
Application with a strict geographic-processing requirement Bedrock regional endpoint or a verified Anthropic residency option Both require validation of model, region, contract, and downstream data paths.

Launch checklist

  • Document the inference operator and data processor in the architecture record.
  • Record the exact model identifier, API surface, region, and endpoint type.
  • Confirm quotas, rate limits, support path, and escalation ownership.
  • Test the largest real request, including encoded files and tool definitions.
  • Run feature tests for streaming, tools, files, images, caching, and structured responses.
  • Set retention, logging, redaction, and access policies before sending sensitive data.
  • Compare costs using identical token, cache, batch, geography, and discount assumptions.
  • Keep provider-specific code behind an adapter so a future migration is controlled rather than a rewrite.

Bottom line

Bedrock is the right default for AWS-governed, regulated, or AWS-consolidated workloads where AWS-operated inference, IAM, audit, and regional controls matter. The direct Anthropic API is the right default for teams that prioritize Anthropic’s native interface and fastest first-party feature access. Claude Platform on AWS is the middle path only when AWS Marketplace purchasing is important but Anthropic should remain the platform operator. Decide from those operating and governance requirements first; compare token economics only after the service boundary is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Platform on AWS the same as Amazon Bedrock?

No. Claude Platform on AWS is operated by Anthropic and uses Anthropic-managed quotas and the native Messages API. Bedrock is operated by AWS, uses AWS-managed quotas and interfaces, and follows AWS’s integration and regional rollout schedule.

Can I use the same Claude request code on Bedrock and the direct API?

Not without validation and often an adapter. Endpoint URLs, authentication, model identifiers, request envelopes, streaming events, required version parameters, and error handling can differ. Test each feature against the exact target endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Bedrock regional endpoint guarantee the lowest latency?

No. It guarantees geographic routing where supported, while global endpoints can route dynamically for availability. Regional endpoints for applicable newer Claude models carry a 10% premium, so choose based on residency and performance requirements rather than assuming one is universally faster.

Who manages quotas on each service?

Anthropic manages quotas for the direct Anthropic API and Claude Platform on AWS. AWS manages quotas for Amazon Bedrock. A quota increase with one operator does not transfer to another.

How should I compare the prices?

Use identical assumptions for model version, input and output tokens, caching, batch mode, endpoint geography, support tier, and negotiated discounts. Bedrock and the direct API use different billing relationships, while Claude Platform on AWS reports Anthropic-rated usage as CCUs at a documented $0.01 per CCU unit price.
