Claude on Amazon Bedrock vs. Anthropic’s API: Which Should Developers Use?

Bedrock, Anthropic’s API, and Claude Platform on AWS differ in who operates inference, API support, compliance scope, and regional routing. Here’s how to choose.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Amazon Bedrock when you need AWS to operate Claude inference and want Bedrock’s AWS governance, compliance scope, or supported API integrations. Use Anthropic’s direct API when your application is built around Anthropic’s first-party API and platform capabilities. There is also a third option: Claude Platform on AWS. It is accessed through an AWS account, but Anthropic operates the inference platform—so it is not the same service as Claude on Bedrock.

The right choice depends on the operator, the specific model and API features your application needs, and your organization’s requirements for processing, compliance, and regional routing. There is no universal price or performance winner established by the available service documentation.

First, distinguish the three routes

“Claude on AWS” can mean two different services. AWS’s comparison separates Bedrock, where AWS operates inference, from Claude Platform on AWS, where Anthropic operates the platform. Anthropic’s direct API is also operated by Anthropic, but it is accessed directly through Anthropic rather than through the AWS-integrated platform.

Route Who operates inference? What distinguishes it?
Claude on Amazon Bedrock AWS Bedrock service integration and AWS-managed inference. AWS lists itself as the data processor for Bedrock in its comparison.
Anthropic’s direct API Anthropic Direct access to Anthropic’s API and platform.
Claude Platform on AWS Anthropic Anthropic-operated platform accessed through an AWS account, with AWS account and billing integration. AWS identifies both Anthropic and AWS as data processors for this offering.

These operator and processor distinctions come from AWS’s service comparison and its Claude Platform on AWS overview. For a real workload, verify the contractual terms and processing arrangement that apply to your account.

Choose based on the requirement that matters most

If your priority is… Start with… Reason
AWS-operated inference and AWS service governance Amazon Bedrock AWS operates Bedrock inference and offers its own service integration and API choices.
Anthropic’s first-party API and platform Anthropic’s direct API This is the direct route to Anthropic’s API. Claude Platform on AWS also advertises same-day availability with the first-party Claude API, but uses a distinct AWS-integrated operating model.
An AWS account and billing integration with Anthropic-operated inference Claude Platform on AWS It combines AWS account access with an Anthropic-operated inference platform.
AWS compliance-program coverage Amazon Bedrock, after checking scope AWS says Claude Platform on AWS is a third-party offering not covered by standard AWS compliance programs, certifications, or audit reports. Confirm the relevant service scope and eligibility for your required controls.
A particular Claude model, API, or AWS Region Check Bedrock’s current model/API and regional tables Compatibility and availability vary by model, API, endpoint, and Region.
Agent Skills, code execution, or extended thinking Check Anthropic’s API or Claude Platform on AWS first AWS’s overview lists these among Claude Platform on AWS capabilities. Confirm feature availability and access terms for your account.

The feature and service distinctions above are described in the Claude Platform on AWS overview and AWS’s comparison. They are not a workload-level benchmark: the documentation does not establish that one route is generally faster, cheaper, or more reliable.

How Bedrock’s API choices affect integration

Bedrock is not a single API surface. AWS documents Invoke, Converse, Anthropic-compatible Messages, and OpenAI-compatible API families, but the supported set depends on the selected model. Its API compatibility table lists supported interfaces by model; check the row for the exact Claude model before choosing an SDK or designing request handling.

  • Invoke: AWS documents synchronous invocation, streaming, bidirectional streaming, and asynchronous invocation within this family.
  • Converse: A unified interface for multi-turn conversations.
  • Messages: Supports Anthropic-compatible requests for Claude models where listed.
  • OpenAI-compatible APIs: Bedrock offers Chat Completions and Responses interfaces, but do not assume a Claude model supports them. The Claude rows in AWS’s compatibility table may show no support for those interfaces.

AWS’s Claude model documentation confirms that callers can send Anthropic Claude Messages API inference requests through Bedrock, while warning that modalities, features, and Regions differ by model. “Messages-compatible” therefore does not mean every Anthropic API feature or behavior is automatically available through Bedrock.

Which Bedrock endpoint should a new app use?

AWS says, “For most new applications, use the bedrock-runtime endpoint.” It identifies bedrock-mantle for capabilities currently available only there, including server-side and pre-configured tools, background inference, Projects, or Workspaces. Check AWS’s endpoint guidance against the feature your application needs before selecting an endpoint.

Compliance, data processing, and retention are different questions

AWS states that Claude Platform on AWS is a third-party offering and is not covered by standard AWS compliance programs, certifications, or audit reports, including SOC, ISO, and HIPAA eligibility. AWS identifies Bedrock as the AWS-operated Claude route for organizations that need AWS compliance coverage, subject to the applicable service scope and eligibility. That is not a blanket assurance that every Bedrock configuration or workload meets a particular regulatory obligation: verify the exact certification, controls, geography, and account terms you need. See AWS’s comparison and compliance notes.

Processing and retention also should not be collapsed into one claim. AWS’s migration documentation says AWS is the data processor on Bedrock and Anthropic does not retain inference inputs or outputs there. For Claude Platform on AWS, Anthropic is the data processor, and Zero Data Retention is available on request through an Anthropic account representative. Confirm enrollment and contractual terms rather than assuming that a retention setting applies automatically.

Region and routing can change the answer

Bedrock documents three routing patterns: direct inference in a Region, geographic cross-Region inference, and global cross-Region inference. Direct inference stays in the specified Region; geographic routing may route within its selected geography; global routing may reach supported commercial Regions worldwide. Availability depends on model and Region, so a model being available in Bedrock does not by itself establish that every routing option is available for it.

For strict residency or geography requirements, select a model and route that meet them rather than relying on the service name alone. Use AWS’s regional model availability table to check current availability and profile details.

Budget and capacity need account-specific checks

There is no supported blanket conclusion that Bedrock or Anthropic’s direct API is cheaper. Price depends on the model, Region or endpoint, input/output mix, service tier, caching, and traffic pattern; the service comparison does not provide a current like-for-like cost result for a defined workload. Compare the current price sheets using your expected request mix, and check the account’s quotas before launch. AWS says Bedrock rate limits and quotas are managed by AWS, while Anthropic manages them for Claude Platform on AWS; see the service comparison for that distinction.

The available documentation also does not establish a comparable latency, availability, or quality benchmark between routes. If those factors will decide the architecture, measure them in your target accounts with the same model and version, prompts, Region, streaming behavior, concurrency, retry policy, and application network path.

Plan a migration as an integration change

Moving from Bedrock to Claude Platform on AWS is more than changing a URL. AWS’s migration guide identifies changes to the base URL, API format, model IDs, SDK client and package, streaming format, request headers, and Region availability. SigV4 signing remains supported, but the signing context changes.

Before switching, inventory the application’s request and response handling, streaming parser, SDK dependencies, authentication setup, model identifiers, and required Regions. Then validate the target endpoint and model against the features your code actually uses; API-family similarity alone is not proof of drop-in compatibility.

A practical decision

  • Choose Bedrock when AWS must operate inference, when Bedrock’s AWS integration is central, or when AWS compliance coverage is a requirement you have verified for the selected service scope.
  • Choose Anthropic’s direct API when direct first-party Anthropic API access is the main requirement.
  • Evaluate Claude Platform on AWS when you want AWS account integration but Anthropic to operate the inference platform—and confirm its distinct processor and compliance terms.
  • For any route, validate the exact model, API features, endpoint, region, pricing, quotas, and contractual requirements before committing.
